Ideally we would like to use a 'Master Template' to control the layout of all model entries, however due to the limitations of what has been installed on the server (so far) we can't get it working quite right.

=Attachments=
 +
With very few exceptions, we want attachments to be on the same page as their parent unit because it doesn't help anybody to have them in different places. But this means the page setup is slightly more complex due to the way the abilities auto-categorise the page. The thing is, if an attachment has different abilities to the parent unit, we want ''just'' the attachment to be in that category, not the parent unit as well.

=Explanation=
+
===Step 1: Suppress the auto-categorisation===
{{Infobox|This portion is a WIP that I haven't finished updating yet}}
+
When you add the attachment's abilities to the page, you need to suppress the auto-categorisation to stop the parent unit being "tagged" with the ability. The way to do this is:
==First line==
+
: {{k|<nowiki>{{Ability|Hide_Cat=<!---YES--->}}</nowiki>}}
The first line is the fluff text that we normally copy-paste from PP's gallery pages.
+
: For example, : {{k|<nowiki>{{Undead|Hide_Cat=<!---YES--->}}</nowiki>}} would add the text description of Undead to a page, but not add the page to [[:Category:Undead]].

==Basic Info==
+
===Step 2: Create a "dummy" page for the attachment===
===Statblock===
+
"Dummy" pages should follow the naming scheme {{k|PARENT UNIT:ATTACHMENT NAME (TYPE)}}. For example, {{k|Holy Zealots:Monolith Bearer (CA)}}
* Don't change the "class" stuff.
+
# Open a new tab in your browser, and navigate to the page {{k|<nowiki>http://battlecollege.org/index.php/PARENT UNIT:ATTACHMENT NAME (TYPE)</nowiki>}}
* Don't change the "width" stuff.

* Do change the rating for SPD.

* Change the image file name, and the model name. This always needs to go under the first stat (SPD), otherwise the image jumps up top instead of aligning on the right.

* Change the other stats

* To remove a stat, you need to delete the whole row. Each row is separated with a |- command, which you'll need to delete too.

* To add a new stat, you need to add a whole row. Simply copy-paste another row (including the |- command). If you forget the |- it will pop out the side of the table instead of starting a new row.

===Statblock descriptions===
+
===Step 3: Populate the dummy page===
Remember what we said in the '''[[Editor's Creed]]''' - we can't post exact stat values, and we describe ''everything'' as either low/average/high and it's deliberately a little bit ambiguous. We hardly ever use "Very high" and "Very Low".
+
# Set this page up as a redirect to the parent unit.
 +
# Add the attachment's abilities to the appropriate category.
 +
: For example:
 +
<pre>#redirect [[Holy Zealots]]
 +
[[Category:Officer]]
 +
[[Category:Command Attachment]]
 +
[[Category:Minifeat]]
 +
[[Category:Greater Destiny]]
 +
[[Category:Holy Monolith]]
 +
[[Category:Sacrificial Pawn]]</pre>

=====Normal Stats=====

The averages used are:

* '''SPD''' = 5 or 6

* '''STR''' = (I forget what we agreed)

** Normally, you only bother to list STR on models that are able to make Power Attacks. Otherwise it's irrelevant and P+S is more important.

* '''RAT''' = 5 or 6

* '''MAT''' = 5 or 6

* '''DEF''' = (I forget what we agreed)

* '''ARM''' = (I forget what we agreed)

* '''CMD''' = (I forget what we agreed)

* '''FURY/FOCUS/MAGIC ABILITY''' = 6

* '''FURY THRESHOLD''' = (I forget what we agreed)

* '''RANGE''' = 8 to 10"
+
=Troubleshooting=
* '''POW''' = (I forget what we agreed)
+
===How do I change the image?===
* '''P+S''' = (I forget what we agreed)
+
# At the top of the page, under {{k|Tools}}, you want to use the {{k|Upload a File}} feature.
 +
# In the page you're creating, near the top, you want to find the part that says {{k|<nowiki>|rowspan=99|[[File:No image available.png|200px]]</nowiki>}} and change it to your file name.
 +
#* For instance, if you've uploaded an image called "BurritoCannon_Web300.jpg" then you'll need to change the page to say<br> {{k|<nowiki>|rowspan=99|[[File:BurritoCannon_Web300.jpg|200px]]</nowiki>}}

=====Relative Stats=====
+
===What should I put in the statblock?===
There are a few things that vary so wildly between model types that they can't be easily pigeonholed to a single average value. Namely, hitpoints and points cost. In this case we assign averages that are '''relative''' to that model type.<br>
+
* See [[Guidance on Writing a Model Analysis]] to see what sort of descriptions can be used in Statblocks
For instance, the relative average cost of a light warjack is 10 points, but the relative average cost of a heavy warjack is 20 points (verification needed)

Note, also, Points Costs are described as 'Conscript', 'Average', and 'Elite'.
+
===I can't figure out how to edit the statblock layout===
 +
This is best shown by example:
 +
* If you want a better explanation of how to edit tables, refer to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Table main wikipedia article]

==Other==

Trivia, Themes, and other faction models are, I hope, quite self-explanatory.

===Rules Clarifications===

These are inserted onto a page in exactly the same way as abilities were. Except instead of being <pre>{{Ability}}</pre> you input <pre>{{RC Ability}}</pre>

So go back up to the list of abilities you already inserted in the Basic Info section, copy-paste them to the bottom rules section, then put the RC text in. Done and dusted.

=FAQ=
+
===What should I put in the "Thoughts on Model" section?===
: Q. I tried inserting an ability called "Uniherd", but it just came up with red text saying "Template:Uniherd". Why isn't it working?
+
* See [[Guidance on Writing a Model Analysis]] to see what sort of content is supposed to go under each header.
: A. That ability is so new that no one has set up a base template for it yet. You can either try doing it yourself (read [[How to use Templates]] first) or you can post on the [[Talk:Main Page]]. Don't forget to sign your post with <pre>~~~~</pre>

: Q. I don't know what I'm doing and I broke it. Help!

: A. PM me (juckto) on the privateer press forums and I'll look into it.

How to set up a new model entry (Manually)

  1. Open up a new tab in your browser, and navigate to the page you want to create.
    • For example, if you wanted to write about a new model called "The Burrito Cannon" you would go to
      http://battlecollege.org/index.php/The Burrito Cannon
  2. You'll get a warning about the page not existing / no text on the page. You want to click on Edit this page to create it.
  3. Copy the code-text shown below into the page you want to create.
  4. Adjust it as necessary.
  5. Unit attachments are slightly complicated. Refer to the #Attachments section below.
  6. Refer to the #Troubleshooting section below if you have trouble.

Her main method of winning is ...{{PH}}<br> ''For example: "using her feat turn to get a melee/ranged/spell assassination" "attrition then win on scenario" "board control then win on scenario" "sending a jack in, to beat the enemy warcaster's face into pulp" "etc" ''

===Theme thoughts===
The best theme to take her in is probably {{PH}} because {{PH}}.

Alternatively, she can run a pretty decent {{PH}} force because {{PH}}.

Attachments

With very few exceptions, we want attachments to be on the same page as their parent unit because it doesn't help anybody to have them in different places. But this means the page setup is slightly more complex due to the way the abilities auto-categorise the page. The thing is, if an attachment has different abilities to the parent unit, we want just the attachment to be in that category, not the parent unit as well.

Step 1: Suppress the auto-categorisation

When you add the attachment's abilities to the page, you need to suppress the auto-categorisation to stop the parent unit being "tagged" with the ability. The way to do this is:

{{Ability|Hide_Cat=<!---YES--->}}
For example, : {{Undead|Hide_Cat=<!---YES--->}} would add the text description of Undead to a page, but not add the page to Category:Undead.

Step 2: Create a "dummy" page for the attachment

"Dummy" pages should follow the naming scheme PARENT UNIT:ATTACHMENT NAME (TYPE). For example, Holy Zealots:Monolith Bearer (CA)

  1. Open a new tab in your browser, and navigate to the page http://battlecollege.org/index.php/PARENT UNIT:ATTACHMENT NAME (TYPE)

Step 3: Populate the dummy page

  1. Set this page up as a redirect to the parent unit.
  2. Add the attachment's abilities to the appropriate category.
For example:
#redirect [[Holy Zealots]]
[[Category:Officer]]
[[Category:Command Attachment]]
[[Category:Minifeat]]
[[Category:Greater Destiny]]
[[Category:Holy Monolith]]
[[Category:Sacrificial Pawn]]

Troubleshooting

How do I change the image?

  1. At the top of the page, under Tools, you want to use the Upload a File feature.
  2. In the page you're creating, near the top, you want to find the part that says |rowspan=99|[[File:No image available.png|200px]] and change it to your file name.
    • For instance, if you've uploaded an image called "BurritoCannon_Web300.jpg" then you'll need to change the page to say
      |rowspan=99|[[File:BurritoCannon_Web300.jpg|200px]]

What should I put in the statblock?

I can't figure out how to edit the statblock layout

This is best shown by example:

What you want to do Code before your edit Code after your edit
You want to add "Magic Ability" between "RAT" and "DEF"
| '''RAT''' || ccc
|-
| '''DEF''' || ddd
| '''RAT''' || ccc
|-
| '''Magic Ability''' || eee
|-
| '''DEF''' || ddd
You want to delete "RAT" because the model has no guns.
| '''MAT''' || ccc
|-
| '''RAT''' || eee
|-
| '''DEF''' || ddd
| '''MAT''' || ccc
|-
| '''DEF''' || ddd

I can't get my ability template(s) to display correctly

Error Example Cause Solution
The ability appears as red text Template:Example Ability You made a typo. For example
  • {{Armor Piercing}}
  • {{Armour Piercing}}
Fix the typo
Incorrect capitalisation. For example
  • {{Armor Piercing}}
  • {{Armor piercing}}
Fix the capitalisation.
The template doesn't exist (yet) You'll have to create it yourself. Refer to Setting up a new ability/spell/etc page
The ability has strange {{{1}}} and/or {{{2}}} all the way through it. Leadership [ {{{1}}} ] - Friendly {{{2}}} models in this model's command range gain {{{3}}}. This template requires you to give it inputs, and you have given it none, so it's displaying the defaults instead. The inputs that are required change from template-to-template. The best solution is to go to it (in this case, you would go to Leadership) and there will be an explanation there.

What should I put in the "Thoughts on Model" section?
