What is a Template?

Strictly speaking, when you're discussing "Templates" on a wiki it means any page which is inserted as content onto another page.

However, on this Battle College wiki, when we say "Template" we (mostly) just mean the rules summaries that we have created for special rules in the game. The purpose of these templates is to provide a short and sweet summary of the in-game effects, so readers can quickly review the model's abilities. It also saves us time, provides consistency, and auto-categorises models by their abilities.

How to Misuse Templates

Warning!
Read this section, don't skip ahead to "How to Use".

Using a template when you should use a link

I'm seeing a lot of people mis-using the templates and inserting them into the middle of paragraphs. Remember, if you want to insert a template use the curvy brackets { , if you want to insert a link use square brackets [

  • Good example
His feat now gives [[Overtake]] to faction models, which is great for chewing through enemy infantry.
His feat now gives Overtake to faction models, which is great for chewing through enemy infantry.
  • Bad example
His feat now gives {{Overtake}} to faction models, which is great for chewing through enemy infantry.
His feat now gives Overtake - When this model destroys one or more enemy models with a basic melee attack during its Combat Action, after the attack is resolved it can immediately advance up to 1". to faction models, which is great for chewing through enemy infantry.

Inserting superfluous content into templates

Every extra sentence you put into a template is an extra sentence that appears in every model. If you fill the template up with "tips" and "clarifications" then you are going to completely undo the purpose of us setting up "short and sweet" summaries.

If you want to add that sort of information then feel free to add it to the page's category instead. For instance, add info to Category: Spell Slave not Template: Spell Slave.

Correctly using Templates

This page is to teach new users how to use the "basic" templates available on this wiki.

Types of Templates

Abilities/Spell/Etc

You can insert any ability, spell, animus, etc into a page by simply inserting {{Ability name}}. For instance, inserting {{Undead}} will cause ...
Undead - This model is an undead model and not a living model.
... to be inserted into the page.

When you insert an ability into a model's page, please also insert {{RC ability name}} at the bottom of the page. Most RC are currently placeholders, but adding them now saves time later.

Tip lightbulb.png

Tip !
If the text shows up red, such as Template:Example Ability then that means no one has created that ability yet. You can set it up yourself by following the instructions on Setting up a new ability/spell/etc page

Variations on abilities can be inserted by using the following naming scheme:

  • {{Ability}}
  • {{Ability Attack}}
  • {{Ability Action}}
  • {{Critical Ability}}
  • {{Chain Attack Ability}}
  • {{Combo Ability}}
Example code Example displayed
{{Smite}} Smite - A model directly hit by this attack can be slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. The POW of collateral damage is equal to {{{1}}}
{{Smite Attack}} Smite (★ Attack) - The model hit is slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.
{{Smite Action}} Smite (★ Action) - Model hit is slammed. The slam damage roll has the POW added, but collateral damage has no POW added.
{{Critical Smite}} Critical Smite - On a critical hit, the model hit can be slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.
{{Combo Smite}} Combo Smite (★ Attack) - The model hit is slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. When resolving damage for this attack, the model hit suffers a damage roll with POW equal to the STR of this model plus twice the POW of this weapon. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.
{{Chain Attack Smite}} Chain Attack: Smite - If this model hits the same model with both its initial attacks with this weapon, after resolving the attacks it can immediately make one additional melee attack against the model hit. If the additional attack hits, the target is slammed d6" directly away from this model and suffers a damage roll with POW equal to the STR of this model plus the POW of this weapon. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.

Placeholder template

{{PH}}

You can insert a 'Placeholder' and tag the page with the Category:Placeholder by simply adding {{PH}}

This model has only recently been released, and the content in the "Thoughts On" section is based more on theory-machine than actual gameplay experience.

(★) Bearing in mind that other editors may make suggestions you don't think are the "best" but that doesn't make them "wrong". Dont delete stuff just because you disagree with it, please.
