Abilities

  • Dodge - This model can advance up to 2" immediately after an enemy attack that missed it is resolved unless it was missed while advancing. It cannot be targeted by free strikes during this movement.
  • Escapees - When this model is destroyed by an enemy attack, collateral damage, or a continuous effect, you can replace it with a Gremlin Swarm solo. Then this model is removed from play.
  • Practiced Shot - If this model uses its Normal Movement to aim, it ignores Stealth, and its ranged weapon gains +4 RNG that activation.
  • Reposition [3"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, this model can advance up to 3", then its activation ends.

Weapons

  • Slingshot - 8" range ranged weapon that does no damage
    • Disruption symbol.jpg Disruption
    • Havoc - This attack causes no damage. Instead, if it directly hits an enemy model, roll a d3. On a 1, the model hit is pushed d3" in a direction determined by the deviation template. On a 2, the model hit suffers a POW 10 magical damage roll and upkeep spells and animus on it immediately expire. On a 3, it suffers -2 to damage rolls for one round.
    • Luck - When attacking with this weapon, this model can reroll missed attack rolls. Each attack roll can only be rerolled once as a result of Luck.

Theme Forces

  • Other Factions
    • As a Mercenary/Minion model, he can also be taken in a bunch of other Faction's theme forces. Refer to #Other Theme Forces.

Thoughts on Weird Wendell, Gremlin Wrangler

Template:Recent Release

Weird Wendell, Gremlin Wrangler in a nutshell

He's a ... disruption solo? Other than that, I don't know how to summarise him. He's just ... weird. Because his main and only weapon has random effects it’s difficult to plan a strategy around Weird Wendell. But the free solo and disruptive potential of this model make him something to consider.

He looks like he doesn't do much for a 4-point solo, but keep in mind the Gremlin Swarm is like getting a 3-point solo "for free". Therefore you could think of him as a 1-point solo ... but there are problems with blindly applying that sort of thinking.

Combos & Synergies

  • He provides a Gremlin Swarm to factions that usually do not have access to them.
  • He gets around FA restrictions on gremlin swarms in Grymkin - especially useful in Dark Menagerie where Gremlins have serenity.
  • He is a very rare Ranged support solo for the usually Melee centric Grymkin. While this means he is limited in terms of faction support it also means he has a niche that no one else can fill.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He's expensive money-wise to play: He comes in a box with Spawn Gates for the Riot Quest game, which inflates his cost, and you need to own a Gremlin Swarm model for when he dies (unless your opponent is okay with proxies). This makes him one of the most fiscally expensive solos to collect in the game.
  • If he is RFP'd before destroyed, you dont get a Swarm.
  • Havoc is unreliable. In fact a lot of what he does is random and weird so you can’t really plan for him.
  • If he gets into melee he cannot do anything other than wait for help, hope the opponent misses so he can dodge away, or take a free strike.
  • Paper thin armour

Tricks & Tips

  • He can contest objectives really well - as if he dies he summons a stealth and incorporeal model in his place.
  • Run him past enemies to trigger free strikes if you really need the gremlin swarm. If they don’t hit you shoot them in the back if they do hit you will die and get your swarm.
  • If he dies in a space where there isn't room to put down a medium base, you don't get to put the Gremlins into play. So don't ever let more than one model get B2B with Wendell!

Other

Trivia

  • Released 2019.12
  • Weird Wendell looks quite a bit like Doctor Who - the fact he is included with gates that let you teleport can’t be a coincidence.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Partisan      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

Which Faction am I?
  • Partisans are Mercenary (or Minion) models unless they're taken in their "Home" Faction. For example, a Mercenary model that is Partisan [Cygnar]:
    • When used in most armies it is "friendly Faction" only to other Mercenary models.
    • When used in a Cygnar army it is "friendly Faction" to Cygnar models ... and stops being "friendly Faction" to any other Mercenaries in that Cygnar army.
  • In a multi-caster game, Partisans count as the main army's Faction and not as a Mercenary models (if playing a Faction other than Mercaneries). (Infernal Ruling)

Attachments

  • If a Partisan unit can get a special attachment from their Partisan Faction (for instance a Soulless Escort or Trollkin Sorcerer) then they can only get that attachment when they're in the Partisan Faction. They can't take it when working as a regular Mercenary. (Locked thread)
  • When taken in their Partisan Faction, they can't have a Ranking Officer attached.

Partisan warcasters

  • If you have a Partisan caster, you must choose whether your army is a Mercenary force or a [Partisan Faction] force. What warjacks the caster can take are then limited by your choice.
  • Partisan casters can be taken in [Partisan Faction] theme forces. Refer to the main rulebook.
  • Partisan casters can be fielded in multiple-caster games. (Locked thread)
See also the Category: Partisan for what happens if you mix and match Partisan casters and Merc casters in multi-caster games.

Partisans & Theme Forces (Edit)

  • Partisans are Mercenary/Minion models, so there are two ways you can add them to a theme force:
    1. Freely: If the Partisan is on the list of allowed models, then you can take as many as you want plus another Mercenary unit/solo. (Infernal Ruling)
They can be explicitly allowed (for example Jaws of the Wolf allows "Kayazy models/units" so Partisan Kayayz can be used freely).
They can be implicitly allowed (for example Scourge of the Broken Coast allows "living Cryx models/units" and Partisan Cephalyx fit that criteria, so they can be used freely). (Infernal Ruling)
    2. Limited: If the Partisan isn't on the list of allowed models, it does use up your "Up to one Mercenary/Minion" slot, so you can only have the one.
  • Whether you used option 1 or 2 above, once they're in your theme force they count as a Faction model and so:
    • They can be taken as a Requistion Option (if they fit the Requistion description).
For example Lanyssa can be taken as a free solo in the Legion of Dawn theme. (Infernal Ruling)
    • They will get any theme benefit that they fit the description for.
For example Storm Division gives all Cygnar models Immunity Electricity, so Partisan Mercs in that theme get immunity too.
For example Nemo4's Mechaniks get Reposition [3] in Heavy Metal. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Dodge      (Edit)

  • Dodge triggers after any missed attack - melee, ranged, or magic.
  • An enemy model with 2" melee range that is B2B with you before you Dodge, will be exactly 2" away afterwards, and thus will be able to attempt a 2nd melee attack.
  • If you're missed by an AOE attack, but it doesn't deviate very far and still hits you then: Dodge still triggers, but the AOE does damage before you get the Dodge movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If an enemy can attack you when you advance and then stop moving (such as Countercharge or Defensive Strike) and they miss you, then you can trigger Dodge (because you're no longer advancing).
  • Dodge plus Riposte (Edit)
    • If a model has both Dodge and Riposte, you can choose whether to dodge or riposte first. Appendix A Step 13 applies here, because the controller of the model being attacked is not the active player.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Escapees      (Edit)

  • Although this causes Wendell to be RFP'd, he still generates a corpse and soul token because he got to the "destroyed" stage.
  • Regardless of which Faction Wendell works for, when he dies the Gremlins that are spawned are always a Minion Grymkin solo.
  • Replace (Edit)
    • There are three types of Replace: Dragoons getting dismounted, Grunt models being promoted to a Leader model, and abilities that transform one model into another (such as Infection or Soul Gate)
    • Colossals and Gargantuans cannot be placed via a replacement effect. (Infernal Ruling)
    • You cannot replace a model if there isn't enough space, and you don't apply the rule of Least Disturbance.
This can lead to some awkward rules interactions when a larger model replaces a smaller, or any model replaces another while overlapping a third model. Click to read more.   [Show/Hide]
      1. If it is completely voluntary (such as casting Soulgate) then you simply don't get to place the larger model because there isn't room. (Infernal Ruling)
      2. If it is involuntary and occurs while moving (such as a flying Dragoon moving and taking a free strike that dismounts him while overlapping something) then you rewind the movement until you reach a point where there is sufficient space to carry out the replacement. This can cause it to move several inches away from where it took the free strike. (Infernal Ruling)
      3. If is involuntary and occurs while standing still (such as Little Alyce getting shot and trying to transform into Big Alyce) you simply don't get to place the larger model because there isn't room.
In the case of Alyce, you can't trigger Traumatic Transformation so Little Alyce goes through the disabled-boxed-destroyed process like a normal model does, and never becomes Big Alyce. (Infernal Ruling)
In the case of the Northkin Fireeaters, the Pyg Grunt model can only be promoted to the Troll Leader model if there is enough space. If not, he stays a Pyg but becomes the unit commander.
    • Note that if two models are B2B with a third model, that third model can't be replaced with a larger model. There is no configuration where it fits and overlaps where the small one was.

Rules Clarification : Practiced Shot - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
  • Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
  • If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
  • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Disruption      (Edit)

  • If a model is disrupted, it cannot get focus for any reason. Whether the rule says 'allocate', 'gain', 'receive' or 'give' ... Disruption stops it all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Despite being unable to channel spells, a warjack can still be the target of spells just fine.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Havoc      (Edit)

  • Push - General     (Edit)   [Show/Hide]
    • Pushed models do not change their facing.
    • Pushed models move at half rate through difficult terrain. Also, Pathfinder doesn't apply during pushes.
    • Pushed models stop if they contact anything - a model of any size, or any obstacles or obstructions.
    • You don't get free strikes against pushed models, because it is "involuntary movement" and therefore does not count as an advance.
    • Pushed models suffer the effects of anything they move through (such as acid clouds).
    • If you use a Push vs a charging model (via a free strike for example), this will stop the charge movement (refer core rulebook).
      • However, if the pushed model is in melee range of its charge target after the push, then it is considered a successful charge. (Infernal Ruling)
      • In that scenario, you measure whether the charging model moved 3" or less excluding the push distance. (Infernal Ruling)
    • If you push a model to a position where it regains Incorporeal (for instance you push it out of range of an Exorcist) then what happens is (Being Checked by Infernals)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Luck - None yet. (Edit)
