Mercenary Theme Force
Flame in the Darkness - Hammer Strike - Llaelese Resistance - Operating Theater - Soldiers of Fortune - Strange Bedfellows - The Irregulars - The Kingmaker's Army - The Talion Charter

The beleaguered soldiers of the Llaelese Resistance are mercenaries only by necessity, taking contracts to help pay the enormous costs of their rebellion. Since the fall of Merywyn, many Llaelese noblemen have helped to fund the Resistance from exile. They leave field operations to individuals like the warcaster Ashlynn d’Elyse, who fights an endless war against the Khadorans who invaded her homeland and killed her father. To some, the likelihood of restoring Llael seems remote, and they have turned their attention to pure vengeance, willing to give their lives to force a reckoning.

Theme Rules - Remix

Theme Restrictions

An army made use the Llaelese Resistance theme force can include only the following Mercenary models:

  • This army can also include up to two non-character Crucible Guard units, up to two non-character Cygnar units, up to two non-character Protectorate units.
    • These units are considerd to be friendly Llaelese Mercenary models instead of Crucible Guard, Cygnar, or Protectorate units.
    • They can include attachments, but cannot include Ranking Officers.
Tip lightbulb.png

Tip !
Non-Merc units:

  • Both units must be from the same Faction.
  • You're allowed two units in total, not "up to the full FA" of two different types of units.
  • The units you take will get the Pathfinder perk.

Full Model List

The models allowed in Llaelese Resistance are:   [Show/Hide]

This list was last updated: 2022.04   (Edit)

Warcasters

Warjacks

  • All non-character Mercenary warjacks
  • Character warjacks can be taken, but only if they have a bond and they're in their bonded model's battlegroup.

Solos

Mercenary Units

Non-Mercenary Units
You can also include up to two non-character units from one of Cygnar, the Protectorate, or the Crucible Guard. (Note: The two units have to be from the same Faction.)

Requisition Points

You can spend each Requisition Point on either:

  • One command attachment
  • One small- or medium-based Mercenary solo

Theme Bonuses

  1. If Ace is included, it counts as a friendly Mercenary warjack instead of a Cygnar warjack.
Note: Only Caine3 can take Ace.
  2. Gun Mage models in this army gain Sniper
Sniper - Instead of making a damage roll to resolve a ranged attack, this model can inflict 1 point of damage. A model disabled by a ranged attack made by this model cannot make a Tough roll.
  3. Llaelese models in this army gain Pathfinder.
  4. Before models are deployed at the start of the game, you can place a 5" AOE rubble terrain feature anywhere completely within 18" of the rear table edge of your deployment zone. When you deploy your models, you can deploy one small- or medium-based solo completely within the AOE.

Recent Changes

2019.07 Remix

  • Game-wide Remix changes
  • Generic "MacHorne models/units" instead of the specific "Sam MacHorne & the Devil Dogs".
  • Menite Archon, Morrowan Archon, and Thamarite Archon added to the list of allowed models.
  • New benefit: Gun Mages get Sniper.
  • Kept the old benefits of Pathfinder and Rubble. Although rubble was changed slightly to prevent an Archon deploying in it.
  • Freebie options stay the same.

Thoughts on the Llaelese Resistance

Llaelese Resistance in a nutshell

The Resistance is a very cool theme with excellent benefits, and tons of non-Merc options. Near army-wide pathfinder is outstanding. Sniper on Gun Mages is excellent as well. Having a 5" pile of rubble near the middle of the board to hide out in is extra good.

The force is awaiting more Llaelese releases which may never come. This leaves you light on choices in a manner of speaking. Once you take your two out of faction picks, you only have Archons, Thorn Gun Mages, Devil Dogs, Malvin & Mayhem, Crosse1 plus a 'jack or Blythe and Bull to round things out.

For this reason, most Llaelese armies are archon-heavy. Since Resistance is only one of two warmachine themes able to run four archons, you often see four.

Finally, the addition of Malvin & Mayhem was a game-changer for this theme as it opened up the possibility of using the Choir of Menoth to support a jack-heavy force.

Theme weaknesses

Few In-Faction options

Very limited range of warcasters and Merc units.

Popular Merc models such as Steelhead Halberdiers, Kayazy Eliminators, Aiyana and Holt, Orin Midwinter, Harlow, Asphyxious4, and Eiryss1 are not allowed.

List Building Tips

First choose the caster and then pick between Cygnar, Protectorate or Crucible Guard. In most cases, Protectorate stuff is best, but the other two have their selling points.

Once you've chosen your two units, you will likely have enough points for three or four Archons plus Malvin & Mayhem, a Gobber Tinker and filler solos.

Ragman, Gibbs and Gorman are the default requisition picks, though Eilish and Boss Machorne are excellent. Always bring Anastasia unless you just can't find the points.

Mercenary models

  • Major Harrison Gibbs is the cornerstone of many a Resistance list due to his Leadership bubble granting Reposition 3" to Llaelese warrior models. However, if you play jacks and Archons, he is not needed.
  • Ragman should also be in every Resistance army because he's your main ARM debuff. Also, with Gibbs' help, he can walk 9" and still apply Death Field.
  • Gorman - Your other ARM debuff. He can also contribute to a cloudwall with Repo.
  • Captain Sam MacHorne & The Devil Dogs - While undoubtedly overcosted and squishy, everyone of them is a knockdown on a stick with their nets. They need serious help with delivery, which can be provided for them in this theme. Crosse can put Lifebound on the so the enemy will not want to kill them, while Ashlynn can just drown the enemy in Rocketmen so they will be delivered anyway.
  • Dannon Blythe & Bull - As mentioned, Kayazy girls are not in this theme. These two are the best (and only) substitute you will find.
  • Thorn Gun Mages with Pathfinder are able to make good use of their Prowl ability, which helps justify their high cost. Also, as mentioned above they are one of your few sources for magic weapons and thunderbolt shots can help you with assassinations and scenario likewise.
  • Taryn also helps with with assassinations thanks to shadow fire. The black penny/sniper combination is of course excellent and at five points he's an excellent free model choice.
  • Eilish is very useful but sometimes tough to squeeze in.
  • Vanguard - It gains Pathfinder here, but it's a focus hog and doesn't do much damage.
  • Anastasia - She's very close to a must-take.
  • Malvin & Mayhem require you to bring Reinholdt or the Gobber Tinker, but if you bring the Choir, they won't get shot and they'll be POW 22 when you send them in. Super nasty under Quicken and Ashlynn1's feat.

Cygnar options

Ashlynn runs Cygnar stuff pretty well. Reason for this is that she makes Trenchers RAT 7, and very hard to kill under Dig in, cloud walls and feat, while Storm Knight models under Quicken can be where they are needed really fast.

  • Trencher Infantry can drop clouds and Reposition back behind with Gibbs. Gibbs can be the solo in the rubble to help start that working sooner.
  • Trencher Long Gunners are an excellent ranged unit that can snipe important solos and WAs or straight up shoot the enemy of the board.
  • Storm Lances are nimble, sturdy and hit (relatively) hard, which is rare in this theme.
  • Stormblade Infantry are slower than Lances, but hit harder under the leader's buff.

Protectorate options

  • Exemplar Cinerators - A perfect option for Crosse, as under Dauntless Resolve and his feat, they can be delivered relatively easily due to their high ARM and Vengeance. Also worthy of consideration with Ashlynn2.
  • Exemplar Vengers - Vengers are a faster option over Cinerators. Useful in an Ashlynn1 or 2 list designed to get the alpha strike. Crosse2 could do worse than to put Dauntless Resolve on them
  • Holy Zealots might seem to be tempting Lifebound options for Crosse2, but they don't do anything except die, which is not a good thing in a theme that relies on its units to do the boatload of the work, while also being restricted in the number of units that can be taken. Not recommended.
  • Choir of Menoth - Ashlynn2 can put Hand of Fate on a Galleon, which makes the Choir appealing. Malvin & Mayhem and Crosse1 supply enough of a focus pool that bringing the Choir is also a reasonably good choice for Macbain and even Ashlynn1.
  • Exemplar Bastions probably not quite as good as Cinerators, but under Gastone they can get up to armor 19 with tough, certainly not as good as armor 23, but instead of playing offensively, you should hold Bastions back in your zone or near your flag. A couple Mat 7, blessed, weapon master defensive strikes will kill most infantry, might kill lights, and put a dent in heavies. Gibbs can also heal them up so they can double dip on sanguine bond. They are tough to deliver.

Crucible Guard options

  • Rocketmen are outstanding with Ashlynn1, able to get up the board quickly and hold ground while jamming like few other units. The other unit choices are a bit outclassed by Protectorate or Cygnar options, though the Dragon's Breath Rocket and Combat Alchemists may become quite helpful if there are ever going to be other Llaelese units that can make use of the support.

Caster Thoughts

Ashlynn1

She is quite strong in this theme. Her (almost) army wide Veteran Leader pushes the RAT and MAT values of most solos and units from decent to great and she personally enjoys pathfinder and rubble to hang out in. Ashlynn excels with any of the unit choices above and also benefits from Morrowan Archons.

Ashlynn2

She wants to put Hand of Fate on a Galleon and sit the Choir behind it while sending archons forward with extended threat ranges. Her second Protectorate unit choice should be something she can keep safe from shooting and ensure they get delivered, so Vengers or Flamebringers are good picks. She also speeds up Cinerators and Bastions to an extent and can grant them unyielding and Tough, so there is a possible build to be found there.

Crosse2

He is probably better off in Soldiers of Fortune or Flame. Nevertheless in Resistance Crosse is played alongside Protectorate units, but does very little for Cygnar or Crucible (or rather, they don't do much for him). Protectorate has exactly the kind of beefy high ARM units he wants to deliver in Exemplars. Exemplar Vengers with both Battle Driven and Dauntless Resolve are ARM 23 while Exemplar Cinerators in shield wall with Dauntless Resolve are ARM 24 - and can be surprisingly fast at getting up the table if the enemy triggers Vengeance. However, he ends up having to burn a Protectorate unit choice to be his Lifebound target, which means running painfully slow Errants, weak Flameguard or useless Zealots. Or you have to bring overpriced Devil Dogs to fill the role.

Macbain

He is the only caster in Mercenaries that can credibly run Menite Archons as this is the only Merc theme in which they can be taken and he and the abysmal Caine3 are the only two casters who dodge the Animosity rule. So, you bring two, plus Choir, plus a Fail Safe Blockader and a Fortuned Malvin & Mayhem and you spray POW 18's over all and sundry.

Caine3

With Choir he could be powerful ... if there were any source of Empower in this theme, and any mercenary warjack that could make good use of his feat (comparable to a Charger). But there ain't so he isn't.

This list practically ignores the "take two units" benefit, instead building the list around 4 heavy warjacks and 4 tough-out Archons. The Choir are thrown in to support these heavies. The list has plenty of focus to throw around every turn, and a bonus to go first.

25 Points

These 3 lists were added to WMU 2019.03.

A lot here depends if you're crossing over with the Protectorate, the Crucible Guard, or Cygnar. This is a hybrid army option so I'm giving all three possible armies as the Llaelese resistance is a great theme either to use your mercs if you want to grow another army or if you already have another army and you want to grow mercs.

    Protectorate of Menoth

The aim of this list is to have a wall of armour that can't be shot off the board and can wreck things, and a shooty battlegroup. Feel free to swap out either of the 'jacks for a Mule.

Six ARM 24 models with Tough and Feign Death in addition to two heavy warjacks with shields and a network of shield guards is, however, not how to win friends at 25 points.

    Cygnar

The only question is do you want Trenchers for the really annoying rolling cloud wall which you can reposition out of, or Storm Blades for hitting power. Ashlynn can only Quicken one unit so one really powerful unit is good for her. Like Gastone you can switch the jacks around. Note that if Trenchers can also be used in The Kingmaker's Army theme.

    Crucible Guard

Rocketmen let you DEF-skew a little and the weapon attachment has a warjack-killing weapon. This list is based on a Warmachine-heavy meta; against Hordes you'd drop Gorman and the Tinker for a Dragon's Breath Rocket

Trivia

  • Llael gained independence from Khador at the end of the Acts of War series of books when Ashlynn, Crosse and Lukas di Morray helped Cygnar take the city of Merwyn from within. Parts of the country were still under Khadoran and Protectorate control prior to the Infernal invasion not long after the Llaelese victory.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Sniper      (Edit)

  • If you choose to do 1 point of damage, this is still considered to be damage "from an attack" for the purposes of Vengeance etc. (Locked thread)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Llaelese Resistance      (Edit)

  • It is 2 Cruicible or 2 Cygnar or 2 Menoth.
You can't take more than 2, and you can't mix and match from multiple Factions. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You can have a non-character unit with a character attachment (i.e. Captain Karli). (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification: Theme Forces     (Edit)

Themes that change a model's Faction   [Show/Hide]
  • Many themes swap which Faction a model counts as. They're slightly inconsistent with how exactly this is worded. Despite this inconsistency - whenever a model is considered a different faction to normal, it will not be its original faction. (Infernal Ruling)
For instance Lukas stops being a Crucible Guard model when taken in an Infernal army, and as a consequence he cannot take Toros or Vanguards in Infernals. (Infernal Ruling)
Rerolling the starting roll   [Show/Hide]
  • You cannot use the theme benefit to reroll if it is a draw. Instead both players reroll until there is a loser, and then the loser can use their reroll benefit (if they have it). (Infernal Ruling)
  • If both players have a reroll, first the original loser uses their reroll.
    • If the original loser still loses, fine.
    • If the original loser now wins, the other player can use their reroll.
    • If it is now a draw, both players reroll until there is a loser. Then the player that hasn't used their theme benefit reroll can still use it, if they want.
Warjacks/Warbeasts with bonds   [Show/Hide]
  • A warjack/warbeast with a bond can always be included in a theme force, whether or not they're in the list of allowed models, but only if they're controlled by that bonded model.
  • This applies even if that bonded model isn't a full warcaster/warlock (changed as of 2018.06).
Including Mercenaries   [Show/Hide]

Number of Mercenaries

  • If your "up to one Merc" ...
    • ... can take warbeasts/warjacks, then you can add warbeast(s)/warjack(s) (without exceeding your "up to one" allowance)
    • ... comes with a Companion model, then you'll get that Companion (without exceeding your "up to one" allowance)
  • There is a bug in Warroom that allows you to not only take one Merc solo/unit, but the entire FA of that Merc solo/unit. It's a bug.

Mercenaries and Ranking Officers

  • Adding a Ranking Officer to a Merc unit doesn't increase the number of Merc units you can take.

Other

  • See also the section on Partisans
Including Partisan Mercenaries   [Show/Hide]

Partisans & Theme Forces (Edit)

  • Partisans are Mercenary/Minion models, so there are two ways you can add them to a theme force:
    1. Freely: If the Partisan is on the list of allowed models, then you can take as many as you want plus another Mercenary unit/solo. (Infernal Ruling)
They can be explicitly allowed (for example Jaws of the Wolf allows "Kayazy models/units" so Partisan Kayayz can be used freely).
They can be implicitly allowed (for example Scourge of the Broken Coast allows "living Cryx models/units" and Partisan Cephalyx fit that criteria, so they can be used freely). (Infernal Ruling)
    2. Limited: If the Partisan isn't on the list of allowed models, it does use up your "Up to one Mercenary/Minion" slot, so you can only have the one.
  • Whether you used option 1 or 2 above, once they're in your theme force they count as a Faction model and so:
    • They can be taken as a Requistion Option (if they fit the Requistion description).
For example Lanyssa can be taken as a free solo in the Legion of Dawn theme. (Infernal Ruling)
    • They will get any theme benefit that they fit the description for.
For example Storm Division gives all Cygnar models Immunity Electricity, so Partisan Mercs in that theme get immunity too.
For example Nemo4's Mechaniks get Reposition [3] in Heavy Metal. (Infernal Ruling)
Requisition Points   [Show/Hide]
  • You can choose the same Requisition option as many times as you like, as long as it doesn't put you over a FA limit.
  • You can't mix and match models from different options. Say one option allows 3 Machine Wraiths and another allows 3 Necrotechs. You can't use your Requisition Point to get 2 Wraiths and 1 Necrotech.
  • If you have an option that allows one other solo, you can't use it to get something already on the list. For instance, Ghost Fleet allows 3 Misery Cages (which are FA 4) for one Requistion Point, and it allows 1 other solo. That "other solo" can't be a 4th Cage.
  • If your theme allows "3 weapon attachments" as a Requistion Option, you can spread them into different units. (Locked Thread)
  • Models with the Man-Sized rule count as small-based models for the purposes of being a Requistion Option. (Locked Thread)
Free models and Specialists (ADR)    [Show/Hide]
  • If your theme only allows one merc solo, you can't have one in your main list and a different one in your specialists.
Unit Attachments   [Show/Hide]
  • If a unit is allowed in a theme, any-and-all of its attachments are allowed too. Exception: Ranking Officers are not allowed unless explicitily mentioned.
  • If the theme force gives a benefit to a specific unit, any-and-all attachments to that unit will benefit too. Even if it is a "generic" attachment like the Void Leech. (Infernal Ruling)
For example, a Trollkin Sorcerer will gain Serenity if its attached to a Dhunian Knot unit in a Power of Dhunia theme force.
  • If your theme allows "3 weapon attachments" as a Requistion Option, you can spread them into different units. (Locked Thread)
  • A non-character unit with a character attachment (i.e. Captain Karli) still counts as a non-character unit. (Infernal Ruling)
When to apply theme benefits   [Show/Hide]
  • With reference to special abilities that themes give to models, Ranking Officers, adding new models, and/or taking control of models:
    1. Theme force benefits are applied when you construct your list or put a new model into play. A model already in play will not lose or gain any theme benefits mid-game based on any changes of faction status or otherwise. (Infernal Ruling)
    2. However, if the theme gives a benefit to models "at the beginning of the game" (such as Devourer's Host letting models begin the game with 1 corpse token) then this benefit does not apply to new models that are put into play mid-game. (Locked Thread)
    • Example 1: Sons of the Tempest says "ATGM units in this army gain Pistoleer". If your opponent takes control of one of them, it keeps Pistoleer while under their control even though it's currently not "in the army".
    • Example 2: Storm Division gives Immunity:Electricity to "Cygnar models in the army." If you include a Mercenary unit with a Ranking Officer, they will get the theme benefit and also keep it even after the Ranking Officer dies.
    • Example 3: Stange Bedfellows gives solos Swift Vengeance. If Nemo4 creates a new solo mid-game, that solo will have Swift Vengeance.

Rules Clarification : Black Industries      (Edit)

  • The entry which allows "Cephalyx models/units" only applies to Partisan Cephalyx. That's because the theme's rules start off with "this army can only include the following Cryx models". Partisan Cephalyx are the only ones that fill that condition.
  • The Cephalyx Agitator also works for Cryx and can go in Black Industries but, because it is not a Partisan, it will use up your Mercenary solo slot.
  • (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : The Creator's Might      (Edit)

  • Elias Gade is allowed in Creator's Might. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You can spend the "Two Vassal solos" requistion option on one Vassal Mechanik and one Vassal of Menoth. Warroom has a bug and tells you that you can't. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Flame in the Darkness      (Edit)

  • You can take any number of Mercenary jacks. You can also select two additional jacks from Khador and Cygnar in any combination you like. Character warjacks with a bond don't count against this limit of 2. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There is a bug in Warroom that allows you to take two Cygnar and two Khador jacks.
  • Morrowan Battle Priest:
    • If your warcaster is a Cygnar model that makes every unit you take a Cygnar unit, and Battle Priests can be attached to any unit.
Warroom has a known bug where it doesn't allow this interaction.
    • If your warcaster is a Mercenary or Khador model, though, the only units the Battle Priest can attach to are the Morrow ones.
    • If you attach the Battle Priest to The Devil's Shadows Mutineers then it can be returned via Blood Bound. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Llaelese Resistance      (Edit)

  • It is 2 Cruicible or 2 Cygnar or 2 Menoth.
You can't take more than 2, and you can't mix and match from multiple Factions. (Infernal Ruling)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : The Bones of Orboros      (Edit)

  • Una1 cannot be taken in this theme (yet) due to the conflict between the theme's "Only Construct warbeasts allowed" and Una1's "Must take warbeasts with flight". There are no construct warbeasts with flight (yet). But if/when there is, then Una1 can be taken in this theme. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : The Devourer's Host      (Edit)

  • Bradigus1 is not legal in this theme. The theme only allows living warbeasts, his rules only allow construct warbeasts, and you can't just 'skip' his battlegroup - you have to spend your warbeast points.
  • If you create a new model mid-game (ie with the Well of Orboros and that model can have corpse tokens, that model does not enter play with a corpse. Because it's not the beginning of the game. (Locked thread)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : The Wild Hunt      (Edit)

  • The animus benefit doesn't apply to enemy warbeasts. (Infernal Ruling)
  • The animus benefit doesn't stack with the Druid Wilder's Herding ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • When it comes to other things that alter COST (such as Lamentation), follow basic maths: Double/halve first, then add/subtract.

Rules Clarification : The Exalted      (Edit)
