Mercenary Privateer Character Solo

Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Talion Charter. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Captain Shae's first mate Hawk is responsible for keeping her Sea Dogs ready for action, and she suffers neither fools nor sloth among the crew. She wields a pair of cutlasses, and few can boast to have lived after standing toe-to-toe with her. Hawk's example fires up the men who go to great lengths to catch even the slightest nod of her approval.

Abilities

  • Parry symbol.jpg Parry
  • Tough symbol.jpg Tough
  • Acrobatics - This model can advance through other models if it has enough movement to move completely past their bases. This model ignores intervening models when declaring its charge target.
  • Object of Desire - While in this model's command range, friendly Sea Dog models gain an additional damage die on Hand Weapon attacks against warrior models.
  • Relentless Charge - While advancing as part of a charge, this model gains Pathfinder.
  • Sprint - At the end of an activation in which it destroyed or removed from play one or more enemy models with melee attacks, this model can immediately make a full advance, then its activation ends.

Weapons

  • Cutlass (x2) - 0.5" reach, POW 4, P+S 9 melee attacks

Theme Forces

  • Other Factions
    • Mercenary models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.
    • Aside from that, there are a few themes that will change what Faction this model counts as (and thus what "friendly Faction only" buffs it can receive). They are:

Thoughts on First Mate Hawk

First Mate Hawk in a Nutshell

First Mate Hawk is an extremely nimble melee solo that brings two P+S 9 weapon master cutlasses, while also supporting Sea Dogs by making them weapon masters against warrior models, which can either matter a lot if one faces lots of multiwound infantry or archons, or not at all if facing non-warrior models like Jacks, Warbeasts, Battle Engines, ect.

Thus her utility as a support solo is extremely reliant on the enemy army composition. However, she is also a SPD 7 solo with Parry, Relentless Charge, Sprint and Acrobatics, which means she can do some good work as a solo hunter and get around.

Combos & Synergies

  • Sea Dog models, notably Press Gangers and Sea Dog Pirates get the most out of her buff.
    • Notably Press Gangers become P+S 11 with Gang, with object of desire that's 21 damage on average, 25 on a charge.
  • Anyone that buffs Privateer models such as Bosun Grogspar, Doc Killingsworth, Captain Phinneus Shae, and Lord Rockbottom.
  • If you want to bring both Press Gangers and Hawk in other factions, don't forget to bring a ranking officer! Notably Mosby in CG who gives them +2 STR and Overtake (making them effectively P+S 13 weapon masters against warriors), or the Attendant Priest who ups their defense or turns their swords magic.
  • The Talion Charter Theme gives her Sacrificial Pawn - and all the Sea Dogs she could ask for. Also take her for free in the theme - she's one of the most expensive options.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Object of Desire does not work against warjacks, warbeasts, horrors, battle engines or structures, so sadly you won't turn lowly Sea Dogs into huge ARM Crackers.
  • She only buffs Hand Weapon attacks specifically, meaning that models such as the Devil's Shadow Mutineers don't get her buff. However Swamp Gobber River Raiders with their ‘poisoned hand weapons’ will get the buff as it contains the key words - not that it’s much to write home about on a p+s 6 attack.
  • While she's the hardest to kill out of all the Privateer solos she can still die to a stray blast.
  • Even though she is fielded with them, Hawk isn't a Sea Dog, so she wont activate abilities such as Bloody Bradigan's Flank.
  • in other factions without pirates Black Bella is the better investment.

Tricks & Tips

  • Due to her high Speed stat, acrobatics, and finishing with a Sprint she can go open up nasty angles of attack as Fiona the Black's arc node. And can survive the Dark Ritual. Remember if you're behind an enemy they probably aren't engaging you so you can be channeled through.
  • Object of Desire works best against heavy infantry and Archons. Use her for that or as a sprinting killer.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Acrobatics      (Edit)

  • Charging through models (Edit)
    • You can't charge all the way through your charge target, with the intention to turn around and face them once you're on the other side.
      • Because you aren't able to satisfy the "must keep the charge target in melee range" clause at the point after you are through the model but before you turn to directly face. At that point the target is behind you, not in your front arc, and thus not in your melee range.
      • Your melee range only extends to your front arc. Refer to the latest errata.
    • You can still "skim" through the edge of their base, if you're careful and smart with your positioning.

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Relentless Charge      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Sprint  and/or Run & Gun     (Edit)

  • You cannot use this ability after an out-of-activation attack (such as Countercharge), only during real activations. (Locked thread)
  • Run & Gun won't trigger if you RFP the model, but Sprint will.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
  • Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
  • If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
  • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.

Rules Clarification : Chain Strike and/or Lunge     (Edit)

  • The extra melee range kicks in the instant you start your activation, and if that makes you engage an enemy then it means you can't aim.
  • The extra range does apply during Frenzies (because that is defined as an activation)
  • The extra range doesn't apply during free strikes or when your opponent takes control of your model.
  • It doesn't increase the range of Power Attacks, because you do not apply weapon special rules to Power Attacks (unless they specifically reference Power Attacks, like Hard Head does). (Locked Thread)
  • If you're affected by another range-altering rule (such as Jakes2's feat) then that won't override Chain Strike. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Parry - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Object of Desire      (Edit)

  • Because this rule uses Hand Weapons as a proper noun, the buff only applies to weapons called Hand Weapon.
    • It doesn't apply to the Pirate's Point Blank attacks. That weapon is called 'Pistol'.
    • It does apply to River Raider's 'Poisoned Hand Weapons'. (Infernal Ruling)
