Minion Unit

Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, The Thornfall Alliance. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

The fierce and hardy warriors of the farrow are as difficult to bring down as the boars they resemble. Armed with primitive rifles scavenged from raids on human caravans, farrow brigands are the equals of many frontline soldiers. After surviving numerous engagements, farrow commandos have begun to imitate the battlefield tactics of more rigorously trained forces. Brandishing grenades and kukris as they infiltrate enemy lines, these cunning fighters offer farrow warlords the ability to quickly strike into the heart of the enemy.

  • Feign Death - This model cannot be targeted by ranged or magic attacks while knocked down.
  • Prowl - While this model has concealment, it gains stealth.

Thoughts on Farrow Commandos

Farrow Commandos in a nutshell

A unit of advance deploying skirmishers to rival Croak Raiders. Typically Farrow casters don’t support them well enough but the Vengeance of Dhunia theme has helped them find a niche that the croaks can’t occupy. They have an odd mix of rules that are all quite niche or don’t really fit together. Combined ranged attack on RNG 6 guns can be tough to utilise and Feign Death is of little use if you are already utilising Prowl or if you are in melee. But they can deal good volumes of damage either on the charge or with the grenades.

When ambushing they have an unaided 14 inch threat range either side of the board with the bombs.

Combos & Synergies

  • Paingiver Task Master - no knockdown tough on conscripts is just plain obnoxious to deal with - and the Task Master's STR buff means that charging commandos can do significant damage to a warbeast
  • Carver1 - Veteran Leader helps
  • Stand them in Helga2’s or the Meat Thresher's Exhaust Fumes and they can proc Prowl and get Stealth even without terrain pieces to stand in.
  • Azazello they are a great Henchmen target as they typically fit Azazello’s game plan more than Brigands and they do have some melee game.

Vengeance of Dhunia

  • Krielstone - everyone likes +2 arm and an extra effect from the CA.
  • Stone Scribe Chronicler - Tale of Mists gives them Stealth.
  • Gunnbjorn2 can give the bombs a nasty feat turn.
  • Grim2 - Mirage, Mark Target and Snipe with the potential of Mortality thrown in for good measure.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Relatively short threat range, about the same as regular infantry.
  • Inaccurate
  • Their best role is as ambushers.

Tricks & Tips

  • Prowl/Pathfinder is the same as it ever was
  • Even if the grenades miss if you are near enough they will hit light infantry in the blast.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment      (Edit)

  • Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Combined Ranged Attack      (Edit)

  • CRA cannot target models in melee ... unless the target is a huge-based model or the attacker has War-Tempered.
  • If you give the attack-leader a buff to their attack (such as Guidance) then that buff applies to the combined attack (even though the other participants don't have the buff). (Locked thread)
  • Assault & CRA (Edit)
    • You cannot mix Combined Range Attacks with Assault shots, as CRA works during your combat action and Assault shots occur before it. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Ambush      (Edit)

  • If you attach a WA or CA to this unit, and the attachment doesn't have Ambush, then they all get to Ambush anyway. (Locked Thread)
  • Ambush and Apparition both occur at Step 5 of the Control Phase. However, Ambush specifies the "end" of the Control Phase so you cannot use Apparition on a model that Ambushes. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Declaring Ambush:
    • Choosing whether a unit deploys normally or ambushes needs to happen before deployment.
So it goes: do the starting roll, Player 2 chooses sides, Player 1 declares Ambushes (if any), then Player 2 declares Ambushes (if any), then Player 1 starts deployment. (Infernal Ruling)
    • If you have both Prey and Ambush, then you declare your Prey target at the normal time (even though the Prey-er isn't currently on the table). (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Feign Death      (Edit)

  • "Cannot be targeted" is not the same as "cannot be hit". You can still be hit by AOEs, Sprays, etc that target someone else.
  • You cannot use Gunfighter vs models Feigning Death, because Gunfighter is still a ranged attack.
  • However, you can use Point Blank, because that lets the attacker make a melee attack with a ranged weapon.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Prowl and/or Just a Tree?     (Edit)

  • Whether you can trigger this ability is a bit awkward;
    • As long as you have concealment you get Stealth ... even if the attacker ignores concealment (such as with Hunter).
    • If you're standing in a cloud, and the attacker "ignores clouds for LOS" (such as Bird's Eye) you get Prowl/Tree.
    • If you're standing in a cloud, and the attacker "ignores clouds completely" (such as Alchemical Mask) you don't get it. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Similar for standing in a forest.
  • If a debuff removes Stealth, Prowl/Tree do not reapply stealth... But this ruling is being rechecked. (Infernal Checking)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Stealth      (Edit)

  • Stealth models are not invisible and you can target them - you'll just auto-miss most of the time.
  • You can target them with a charge.
  • You can target them with an AOE, have it auto-miss and scatter, luckily land on top of them anyway, and that will hit them.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Powerful Charge  and/or Brutal Charge     (Edit)

  • If you declare a charge but move less than 3", then the attack doesn't count as a "Charge Attack" and you won't get the bonus.
