Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Ravens of War. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Yssylla was once a Nyss oracle serving the ephemeral dragon, Everblight. Her young mind was corrupted by the dragon's otherworldly consciousness, and for years she believed serving him was a privilege and her destiny. When the apocalypse came, the dragon's voice vanished, and Yssylla has only broken memories of what followed.

Riot Quest - Although this model has rules which allow it to be played in Warmachine and Hordes, it was primarily designed for the Riot Quest boardgame. RQ is set in an alternate and/or future timeline where the Infernals won the war. Some of the RQ models are slightly more goofy than their WMH equivalents.

Abilities

  • Cold Imm symbol.jpg Immunity: Cold
  • Corrosion Imm symbol.jpg Immunity: Corrosion
  • Stealth symbol.jpg Stealth
  • Magic Ability [ 8 ] - This model can cast spells. Normally this uses up the model's Combat Action and as such is limited to one spell per activation, but exceptions do exist.
  • Unleash the Arcane - Once per turn, when this model hits an enemy with a Magic Ability special attack, immediately after the attack is resolved it can make one additional Magic Ability special attack or special action.

Weapons

  • Unarmed - This model has no weapons.

Thoughts on Yssylla

Yssylla in a nutshell

Yssylla is the mysterious blighted Nyss coming in the new Riot Quest Wintertime Wasteland starter box (pledge now on Kickstarter!). No one knows exactly who she is under the mask, but in the Riot Quest timeline we know that she escaped "whatever happened up north" and has shattered memories of the event. She doesn't like to talk about it to much, but something in her has changed.

She was clearly an Ice Witch of sorts, but her magic is now corrupted with toxic properties. She can't summon a simple blizzard anymore, instead she summons a whirlwind of frozen acid that clings to skin, melts, and dissolves.

Yssylla has lower end defensive stats as she isn't really wearing any armor, but she does has constant Stealth to help protect her. Her main strength lies in her capable arcane abilities. At Magic Ability 8, Yssylla can land her two offensive spells (Puppet Master and Toxic Blizzard) with ease. Support wise she is rocking both Puppet Master (when used non-offensively) and first the first time ever not on a caster ... Shatterstorm.

Note, this Shatterstorm can't be upkeep, as its not on a caster and Yssylla has no resource mechanic, but it still functions the same for the duration it lasts. This spell is great on the new Nyss Archers when they have their command attachment, thanks to the whole unit always having ROF 2 now if the Ammo Porter is in play at all.

While Yssylla can definitely hang back and just be a support model, her Unleash the Arcane means you can get a bit of double duty out of her. Once per turn when she lands an offensive spell, she can immediately cast another spell. This could be two offensive Puppet Masters, two of the Toxic Blizzard AOEs (which Virtues love, in case they are combating an enemy that they can't shoot for any number of reasons) or one of those spells followed up by a potent Shatterstorm.

Combos & Synergies

  • Toxic Blizzard is great for tagging as many enemy models as possible with Corrosion, which set them up to be torn apart by Virtue Hosts and Virtue Champions.
  • Shatter Storm is great on any model with multiple attacks, such as Typhon, an Archangel, Blighted Nyss Raptors or the aforementioned Blighted Nyss Archers.
    • The Throne of Everblight gets special mention since it can cast every time if destroys or RFPs a model with it's melee attacks, of which it has four. So it can potetially mince four single wound infantry, let them blow up, and then get four casts out of it.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Painfully squishy and reliant on Stealth to keep her alive. Watch out for Anti-Stealth stuff.
  • Liable to spell hate, as any spellcaster is bound to be.
  • Low POW on her offensive spell and no way to boost the damage on it. It's mainly there to spread corrosion to set up Virtues.
  • Unarmed, and if she uses her only offensive spell in melee she might kill herself with blast damage.
  • She's basically an anti-infantry specialist: Shatterstorm hard counters a lot of recursion, and a 4" AOE Toxic Blizzard kills infantry. But if there's no enemy infantry around she is just an expensive Puppet Master.

Tricks & Tips

  • You'll probably die the turn after you Unleash the Arcane unless your turn is absolutely overwhelming - so treat her as a backline caster who can move forward.
  • Unleash the Arcane triggers on a hit not just on a direct hit - really useful with Toxic Blizzard as you only need to clip a model with that 4" AoE.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Cold - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Corrosion      (Edit)

  • If you deploy in corrosion hazard terrain (Acid Pool), then you get corroded before the game starts.
Deploying a model in a hazard counts as being "put into play" in the hazard. Being put into play counts as "entering". When you enter a hazard, you trigger the hazard.
  • A weapon can inflict continuous corrosion without itself being a corrosion damage weapon (for example, the Acidic Touch animus). In this case, the attack can hurt models with Immunity: Corrosion it just won't apply the continuous effect.

Rules Clarification : Stealth      (Edit)

  • Stealth models are not invisible and you can target them - you'll just auto-miss most of the time.
  • You can target them with a charge.
  • You can target them with an AOE, have it auto-miss and scatter, luckily land on top of them anyway, and that will hit them.

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Combat Action
Nearly all Magic Ability spells require the spellcaster to use their Combat Action to cast the spell. As such it is not an "at any time" ability (like it is when warcasters/warlocks cast spells). This means ...
  • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You cannot make initial ranged or initial melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
  • You cannot buy additional melee/ranged attacks after using a MA special attack. Refer to the core rulebook, "Special attacks listed as a rule of the model itself are neither melee attacks nor ranged attacks. The rules for these special attacks indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any."
  • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Non-Combat Action
There are a few models that can use a Magic Ability without using their Combat Action. These models get around all the restrictions listed above.
  • Models with Geomancy or Necromancy can use a Magic Ability at "any time" just like a warcaster/warlock.
  • Models with Battle Wizard or Necrophage can make melee attacks then get a bonus "free" spell.
  • Models with Combat Caster can cast a spell before charging, then do a normal charge + melee attack.
  • Note that Battle Wizards, Combat Casters, etc have the option to use their Combat Action to cast a spell. Their special rule is in addition to the normal spell casting, not instead of.

Rules Clarification : Unleash the Arcane - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Unarmed      (Edit)

  • Since this model has no weapons it does not have a melee range.
    • This means it can't engage other models, declare charges, or make free strikes
    • Also it can't gain abilities that require a melee range (such as Ragman granting this model Dark Shroud).
  • However, other models that do have melee weapons can engage this model. So this model can still gain the "target in melee" shooting bonus.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Puppet Master      (Edit)

  • Puppet Master can be put on a model in a unit, and it will be applied to the whole unit. However, as soon as any model in the unit chooses to use it then it expires on the entire unit (so really it only affects one model).
  • Puppet Master can be used on "secondary" damage rolls such as Electro Leap, Magic Bullet, etc.
  • It can't be used on "stay in play" damage effects like a Scather's AOE.
  • If the same player casts Puppet Master on the same model/unit multiple times it doesn't stack, at all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If different players cast Puppet Master on the same target, then they both take effect. When one player uses the Puppet Master, the other does not expire. Both players can use Puppet Master on the same roll. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Shatter Storm      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Detonator      (Edit)

  • Despite being triggered by an attack, the damage from Detonator is not part of the attack. As such it doesn't interact with stuff like Blessed or trigger stuff like Vengeance.
  • The model with Detonator is not immune to the AOE. Be careful how close you stand when making melee attacks!
  • Damage from the AOE is not considered to be damage from an attack (for the purposes of stuff like Ossyan's feat). This will get errata'd into the rule. (Infernal Ruling)
