Protectorate Solo

Mk4 icon.png
This model is available in one Prime Army, Temple Guardians. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Prior to the release of death, the wracked individual’s soul is redeemed whether his contrition is forced or voluntary, and his body glows white-hot under the scrutiny of Menoth’s gaze. The Lawgiver’s redemption cleanses the penitent, whose soul becomes a radiant source of power for the Protectorate’s warcasters. When the sufferer relinquishes his soul, the release of energy is consumed in an eruption of fiery essence—yet another tangible reminder of the righteousness of Menite faith and glory.

  • AD symbol.jpg Advance Deployment
  • Fiery Blast - When this model is disabled, center a 5" AOE on it, then RFP this model. Models in the AOE suffer a POW 14 fire damage roll.
  • Immobile - This model has no Normal Movement or Combat Action, cannot become knocked down or be moved, and is automatically hit by melee attacks.
  • Suffering's Prayer - (1) This model starts the game with 1 focus. During your Control Phase, this model receives 1 focus point if it does not have any. This model cannot have more than 1 focus point at any time. (2) While this model has a focus point, ranged attacks targeting it auto-miss. (3) During a friendly Faction warcaster's activation, it can remove 1 focus point from this model in its control range and gain that focus point. Each warcaster can do this only once per turn. (4) When a focus point is removed from this model, roll a d6. On a 1 or 2, this model explodes with the same effect as Fiery Blast and is RFP'd.

  • Unarmed - This model has no weapons.

Thoughts on Wrack

Wrack in a nutshell

The Wrack is a cheap solo that provides Warcasters with extra focus. For one point a model, Wracks are the most efficient source of extra focus for the Protectorate. Each turn, all Wracks generate a focus that can be pulled onto a nearby Warcaster. When focus is pulled from them, they occasionally erupt in a fiery explosion that engulfs everything in a 5" AOE. In addition, Wracks have terrible defensive stats and tend to die whenever anything so ever as glances at them. They have an ability called Suffering's Prayer that can help protect them from ranged attacks, but it can be circumvented. Knowing where to place Wracks and when to pull focus from them is key to fully utilizing their effectiveness.

Combos & Synergies

  • All Warcasters benefit from more focus. At one point for a model, Wracks are an excellent filler option for any list.
  • Thyra, Flame of Sorrow's feat can place the Wrack anywhere completely within 2" of its starting location. This feat can be used offensively to extent the threat range of the Wrack's Fiery Blast or contest objectives.
  • High Executioner Servath Reznik can create Wracks through his Excruciator ability. He can use these Wracks offensively by killing an enemy warrior model, wracking it near other opposing models, and striking it with his weapon to activate Fiery Blast. If he is exactly 2" away, he won't be hit by it.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • The Wrack never produces a soul, even if it explodes via 'Sufffering Prayer', so it has no synergy with anything that collects souls (such as High Exemplar Gravus, Testament of Menoth, Reclaimer Gatekeeper)
  • The Wrack is still susceptible to aoe and blast damage while under the protection of Suffering's Prayer.
  • Attacks that technically aren't ranged attacks, such as electro leaps, can circumvent the protection of Suffering's Prayer.
  • Models with 2" reach on their melee weapons can attack and kill a Wrack without being in range to be hit by Fiery Blast.

Tricks & Tips

  • You need to be considerate about when you decide to pull focus from a Wrack because it explodes 33% of the time. Never assume that a Wrack will provide more than one focus a game and build your list accordingly.
  • The Wrack's Fiery Blast is Fire damage, so models with Fire Immunity (such as Flameguard Cleansers and Exemplar Cinerators) can safely walk near a Wrack without worry of taking damage.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Unarmed      (Edit)

  • Since this model has no weapons it does not have a melee range.
    • This means it can't engage other models, declare charges, or make free strikes
    • Also it can't gain abilities that require a melee range (such as Ragman granting this model Dark Shroud).
  • However, other models that do have melee weapons can engage this model. So this model can still gain the "target in melee" shooting bonus.

Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment      (Edit)

  • Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)

Rules Clarification : Fiery Blast      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Fire      (Edit)

  • If you deploy in fire hazard terrain (Burning Earth), then you get set on fire before the game starts.
Deploying a model in a hazard counts as being "put into play" in the hazard. Being put into play counts as "entering". When you enter a hazard, you trigger the hazard.
  • Moving into "Shallow water" standard terrain does not cause continuous fire to expire. It's magic fire.
    • You can always use non-standard terrain if you agree with your opponent before the game starts, however.
  • A weapon can inflict continuous fire without itself being a fire damage weapon (for example, the Helios's fists). In this case, the attack can hurt models with Immunity:Fire it just won't apply the continuous effect.
  • In terms of which player's clock is running down during the Maintenance Phase: The active player will roll for expiration of all the continuous effects. Then the inactive player will roll for all the damages of the continuous effects. (Judge Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Immovable and/or Immobile and/or Buried     (Edit)

  • There is no functional difference between "cannot move" and "cannot be moved".
Even if you gain bonus movement (such as Dodge) via a spell or theme benefit, you still can't move. (Locked thread)
  • Witchwood only:
    • Since the Witchwood doesn't have Normal Movement, it can't gain the Aiming bonus.

Rules Clarification : Suffering's Prayer      (Edit)

  • Battlegroup Controllers can't use a Wrack. They are a solo, not a Warcaster.
  • A Wrack doesn't produce a soul if it explodes from focus being taken, because it never reaches the "destroyed" stage.
  • You have to roll a d6 if any effect removes focus, not just when a friendly warcaster takes it. For example, Spectral Leech.
  • A caster can only collect from one Wrack per turn, even if you have more than one Wrack on the board. (Infernal Ruling)
