This model is available in one Prime Army, 5th Division. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

The artillery kapitans of the Winter Guard understand the true strength of Khadoran artillery. Under their command, crews lay down fearsome barrages just ahead of their advancing troops, decimating enemy lines while creating a chaotic environment that Khadoran forces can turn to their advantage. Often friendly troops are caught in these blasts, but a kapitan knows such losses are a necessary price of victory.

Abilities

  • Tough symbol.jpg Tough
  • Artillerist (★ Action) - RNG CMD. Target friendly Faction model gains +2 RAT when making its next AOE ranged attack this turn. If the attack does not directly hit, you can reroll the direction and/or distance of its deviation. Each roll can be rerolled only once as a reasult of Artillerist.
  • Fire & Displace (★ Action) - RNG CMD. Target friendly Faction weapon crew unit. If the unit is in range, it gains gains Reposition [3"]. Fire & Displace lasts for one turn. (Reposition [3"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, a model with Reposition [3"] can advance up to 3", then its activation ends.)
  • Veteran Leader [ Winterguard ] - While in this model's command range, friendly Winterguard models gain +1 to attack rolls.

Thoughts on Winter Guard Artillery Kapitan

Winter Guard Artillery Kapitan in a nutshell

The Kapitan is your accuracy fixer for all things Winter Guard, as well as a much-needed buff for AOE-shooting warjacks. Veteran Leader is an incredible buff for our Winter Guard troops, weapon crews, and even Gun Carriages, making 2 of these a default choice for a requisition point in Winter Guard Kommand. The Artillerist action can also be used on the ranged AOE attacks of warjacks: with aiming + Artillerist, your warjacks can reach pretty decent RAT that will free up the FOCUS to boost damage rolls, or boost attack rolls to hit even high DEF targets. Reposition is situational, as weapon crews have impressive ranges anyway. Most of the time, this is a 3 point model for standing back and increasing all of your MAT/RAT scores, plus putting Artillerist on your best AOE ranged attack once per turn.

Combos & Synergies

  • Winter Guard Infantry/Winter Guard Rifle Corps: Simply standing within 8" of an Artillerist gives these troops a much needed increase from RAT 5 to RAT 6, making them much more accurate, whether using Combined Ranged Attack or shooting solo. It's of particular help to the Rocketeer weapon attachments, which can also be Artillerist targets in a pinch. Less often thought of but potentially important is the increase from MAT 5 to MAT 6. Your Winter Guard should usually be shooting, but if they have to charge in (possibly under Kovnik Joe's +4 STR order) MAT 6 can help make sure they actually get some work done.
  • Assault Kommandos: Because they have the Winter Guard keyword, these elite troops get even better with an Artillery Kapitan behind them. MAT 7/RAT 7 troops can be a real nightmare for enemy infantry, even more so RAT 7 flamethrower sprays. The Kapitan can make sure they get the most out of their Assault shots and Brutal charges.
  • Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich: The other essential Winter Guard support piece, Joe can give one unit +2 on attack rolls each turn which stacks with the Veteran Leader bonus to make some even the most DEF-skewed opponent worry.
  • Obvious, but worth mentioning: he's the Winter Guard Mortar Crew's best friend. With Artillerist + aiming, it can get up to a reasonable RAT 6 (RAT 8 with Kovnik Joe, but he might be best used on other units). Even better, re-rolling scatter will help you get work done even on missed shots.
  • Winter Guard Field Gun Crew: While it can't be targeted with Artillerist (it's not an AoE attack), the Field Gun benefits greatly from Veteran Leader. An auto-knockdown on hit is a very powerful ability, setting up many assassination runs or successful piece trades. RAT 6 (or RAT 8 with Joe) makes that much more reliable.
  • Winter Guard Gun Carriage: Of all the Winter Guard models in this list, the Carriage might be most in need of an Artillery Kapitan's help. It's as expensive and tough as a warjack, but has no way of boosting its own attacks. Veteran Leader and Artillerist can help make sure it doesn't waste activations on missed attacks. Just be aware that it has to stay within 8" of the Kapitan to benefit from the Veteran Leader. It has a nasty habit of charging ahead out of range.
  • Destroyer, Conquest and Victor: these jacks with a strong, single-shot gun will get the most out of Artillerist. +2 RAT will help you to deliver accurate Flares, trigger critical Devastation with greater chance, or simply hit the broad side of a barn with your Destroyer's cannon.
  • Irusk2: Solid Ground enables you to bombard your Winter Guard infantry screen with Mortar shells without a scratch, while Fire for Effect stacks nicely with the Artillerist bonus.
  • Demolisher: Its Girded frame helps you to protect your own infantry from Close Fire shots.
  • Black Ivan: Ivan's shot is boosted by default thanks to its bond with Harkevich. With Artillerist, you'll reliably hit DEF 17 targets on the move, and still have a FOCUS to spare for a damage boost.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He can only buff the first AoE shot, so models with multiple shots (like the Behemoth, the Gun Carriage or the Demolisher) benefit less from Artillerist.
  • He'll be a priority target for opponents that rely on DEF. He's got the same DEF/ARM as a regular Winter Guard trooper, and Tough + 5 health boxes are unlikely to save him.

Tricks & Tips

  • Don't forget about the re-roll of the range and distance on your Artillerist-enhanced model. Shoot deliberately out of range, or target stealthy targets in order to lob "blind" AoE into the back lines of the enemy formations to cripple support solos and units. The re-rolls will significantly increase your chance to hit something squishy, and with some lucky scatter Victor can lob a shell up to 30" away.
  • Remember, like the weapon crew troopers he hangs out with, at the end of the day, he's still a Winter Guard. If an enemy that might care about a POW 12 attack is close, let loose with that blunderbuss!
  • Winter Guard Kommand has very few solos, meaning it can be hard to score scenario points off of a flag. The Kapitan fits in nicely as a disposable piece that you can run out of formation if necessary.
  • CMD 8 is respectable and means he can shout his words of encouragement from a surprisingly long way across the battlefield.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Artillerist and/or Lucky Shot and/or Spotter     (Edit)

  • This ability doesn't work on weapons with AOE (★) weapons (such as Old Witch2). (Infernal Ruling)
  • Roll both direction and distance before choosing which you want to reroll (if any), then reroll those.
    • This means that if you choose to re-roll only one die, and after re-rolling that one die you now want to re-roll the other die ... too bad.
    • (Mk2 2010 Infernal Ruling) which Dark Legacy confirmed in 2021 via Facebook (which I won't link to)
  • If you have two rerolls, you repeat the above process twice. Roll, choose which to re-roll (if any). If you still don't like the result, choose which ones to re-roll a second time. You can even change which one you re-roll.
Again, confirmed via Facebook (which I won't link to)

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
  • Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
  • If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
  • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.

Rules Clarification : Veteran Leader      (Edit)

  • Veteran Leaders don't give themselves the buff, because of the "other models within ..." clause. However, if you have two models giving out the buff, then they can give it to each other. (Locked thread)
  • If a model can get Veteran Leader from two sources (such as Vet Leader [Winterguard] simultaneous with Vet Leader [Assault Kommandos]) then the benefit does not stack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Some versions say "friendly" and some don't. Regardless, Veteran Leader only buffs friendly models. (Infernal Ruling)
