Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Dragon's Host. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

While all warmongers can goad themselves into a killing frenzy, some few are strong and willful enough to become war chiefs, rising by strength to lead the converted tribes. Blight transforms each of these horrors into a murderous fiend overcome by hunger. The very scent of blood lends the War Chief strength and he will sometimes pause amid his bloodletting to gorge on fresh kills.

Thoughts on Warmonger War Chief

Warmonger War Chief in a nutshell

The Warmonger War Chief is decent solo in his own right. He murders low to medium ARM infantry swarms all by himself, and offers support for your Ogruns. His main trick, Veteran Leader can be replicated by the Blight Archon in a larger CMD zone and higher base SPD, but you must pay at least 3 times as much as taking the War Chief, plus the latter can be taken for free and 2 of them can actually cover a bigger area than an Archon. Though the War Chief can support all the Ogruns, he works the best with the Warmongers where you can stop Berserker hits via Blood Drinker if you expect fratricidal attacks.

Combos & Synergies

If you dabble into the Primal Terrors theme, you should definitely consider this guy.

  • Warmongers and Warspears - Having always +1 on your hit rolls is nice. Even nicer, if you can stack additional accuracy buffs, be it from a Blightbringer's aura, or the said units' command attachments. All that makes the Ogruns one of the most accurate brawlers and shooters in the faction. Also, Blood Drinker will help your Warmongers to act a bit more reliably, despite their Berserk rule (see Tips and Tricks).
  • Thagrosh1/Thagrosh2/Anamag and Thagrosh0 - They are all Blighted Ogrun Warlocks (and lesser warlock for Thags0), who appreciate buffs for their offensive spells, or just their ranged/melee attacks in general, if needed. Anamag can pump up his combat capabilities to silly levels under her feat, making the War Chief capable of slicing through an entire shield walled infantry unit with ease.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Slow, and unlike the infantry units he supports, he doesn't get Vengeance.
    • He may also have trouble keeping up with the Chosen.
    • If the Chosen use Blood Drinker they cannot repo away since their activation ends before the repo move.
  • The Blight Archon can also provide the Veteran Leader bonus - though at a much higher point cost

Tricks & Tips

  • Though mainly a support piece, the War Chief can stand his ground in combat - don't be afraid to send him in later in the game if needed.
  • Stopping a Berserk train before you kill your own troops:
    • You can berserk into an incoroporeal model (such as a Gremlin Swarm).
    • You can trigger Blood Drinker even if you're at full health.
    • You can trigger Blood Drinker by killing a friendly model. You'll lose one guy, but that's better than slicing up an entire unit of your own guys. That is especially true if your targets provide no source for triggering Blood Drinker, like Convergence infantry, or undead models.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Powerful Charge  and/or Brutal Charge     (Edit)

  • If you declare a charge but move less than 3", then the attack doesn't count as a "Charge Attack" and you won't get the bonus.

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Berserk      (Edit)

  • Berserk attacks will generate even more Berserk attacks. You keep going until you miss, something survives, or you run out of targets.
  • Berserk grants an additional attack which by definition can only occur during your Combat Action. Therefore Berserk doesn't work on free strikes, impact attacks, etc.
  • "Immediately" means you can't save it until later in your activation. Berserk must be resolved at step 14 of the attack sequence (refer Apdx A).
  • You cannot use "Any Time" abilities while resolving the original attack, the Berserk attack, or between the attacks. Refer Apdx A.
  • Berserk doesn't trigger during a frenzy. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Berserk will not trigger if the target uses an ability to move the damage to another model (such as a warlock transfer).
    • But it will trigger if they use an ability to move the attack to a different model (such as Grim Salvation).
  • Berserk has a weird niche interaction with Agathon's abilities, which you can read here.
  • Attack-Generating Abilities (Edit)
    • From the core rulebook: When a model is granted more attacks as a result of an attack it made, it gains only one. If two or more special rules would grant the model another attack as a result of making an attack, its controlling player chooses which special rule to apply.
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities (such as Black Spot and Kill Shot) you choose to resolve one and "lose" the other (unless you trigger it again later).
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities, and one of them is compulsory (such as Black Spot and Berserk), you must choose to resolve the compulsory one. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Leadership      (Edit)

  • If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
    • See specific models for case-by-case Infernal Rulings.
  • If you have two Leaders handing out different buffs (such as Iona's Leadership giving Dodge, and the Wolf Rider Champion's Leadership giving Prowl) then the benefits do stack - they'll get both Dodge and Prowl. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Blood Drinker      (Edit)

  • You can trigger Blood Drinker off a friendly model (which is useful to halt an otherwise badly-placed Berserk).

Rules Clarification : Unyielding - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Veteran Leader      (Edit)

  • Veteran Leaders don't give themselves the buff, because of the "other models within ..." clause. However, if you have two models giving out the buff, then they can give it to each other. (Locked thread)
  • If a model can get Veteran Leader from two sources (such as Vet Leader [Winterguard] simultaneous with Vet Leader [Assault Kommandos]) then the benefit does not stack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Some versions say "friendly" and some don't. Regardless, Veteran Leader only buffs friendly models. (Infernal Ruling)
