Abilities

Weapons

  • Storm Strike - 10" range, POW 10 gun
    • Damage Type: Magical
    • Damage Type: Electricity
    • Critical Disruption - On a critical hit, a warjack hit will lose all focus points. It also can't gain focus or channel spells for one round.
    • Stormcall - This weapon ignores cover, concealment, and stealth.
    • Surge (★ Attack) - Choose another Stormcaller within 20", then attack any two models between them.
    • Triangulation (★ Attack) - Choose two other Stormcallers within 20", then attack any three targets anywhere within the triangle between them.
  • Rod - 1" reach, P+S 7 melee weapon. Don't expect much from it.

Thoughts on Stormsmith Stormcaller

Stormsmith Stormcaller in a nutshell

Despite their look Stormcallers are best thought of as a type of veteran gun armed infantry who get to shoot stealth models. Two sets of Stormcallers cost as much as a veteran unit of six infantry and do roughly the same job other than that they can spread out much more (and indeed if they get to spread out things start getting interesting).

Combos & Synergies

  • Nemo2's Veteran Leader ability boosts their MAT to OK level, while their RAT to Gun Mage level in his CMD zone.
  • You can get them free in the Storm Division theme.

The Lightning Posse:

  • Firefly and Silver Line Stormguard for extra lightning damage (and Nemo3 on feat turn)
  • Storm Strider for extra accuracy, plus another source for Surge or Triangulation.
  • Stormblade Infantry's command attachment counts as a Stormsmith for special attacks. The Stormwall's Lightning Pods also count as one Stormsmith for these purposes.
  • They of course combo with each other. Your maximum allowance gives you nine of them - for about the price of a full unit of other models.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • It's a Special Order Model.
  • Very squishy targets.
  • Unless you bring them in theme for free, you must buy them in packs of 3, and then, their points cost might compete with a lot of other (and usually better) options.

Tricks & Tips

  • Stormcallers can be added to your army list in groups of 3 models. They are 3 separate solos (not a unit with 3 members).
  • Rangers, GMCA, and aiming can all buff their accuracy. Unfortunately, most of these sources are not present in their theme forces.
  • They're solos so direct buff spells, like Deadeye, are ineffective on them.
  • If you run a couple of stormsmiths to set up triangulation you can get a lot more shots off.
    • Don't be afraid to run one behind enemy lines so the other two can stand still and aim during the triangulation.
  • Their greatest boon is ignoring Stealth, but they're also useful against models with Dig In and/or Incorporeal.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Electricity      (Edit)

  • When electricity arcs/leaps, you ignore models with Immunity:Electricity. The arc "skips" them.
  • If you attack a model with Immunity:Electricity, the arc/leap won't go anywhere at all. The arc is "grounded".
  • Incorporeal models do not have Immunity: Electricity (they just ignore non-magical damage). As such electricity can arc/leap to and from incorporeal models.

Rules Clarification : Disruption      (Edit)

  • If a model is disrupted, it cannot get focus for any reason. Whether the rule says 'allocate', 'gain', 'receive' or 'give' ... Disruption stops it all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Despite being unable to channel spells, a warjack can still be the target of spells just fine.

Rules Clarification : Stormcall - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Surge and Triangulation     (Edit)

  • If there aren't enough Stormcallers within 20" then you don't get to make any attacks at all. Measure before you declare the attack!
  • You need LOS to your target(s), but not to other Stormcallers.
  • In a Triangulation, all three Stormcallers must be within 20" of the other two. You can't string them out in a line 40" wide.
