99% of this website is about Mark 3 (mk3), which is the previous edition of the game (2016 to 2022). The reasons for this are explained here.

1% of the website is about Mark 4 (mk4), but only in regards to which mk3 models are useable in mk4 Prime and which are mk4 Unlimited. See Legacy Armies for more detail.

This model has not (yet) been updated with Mk IV rules, as of 2022.11. Privateer Press have promised it will get updated ... eventually.
You can view the Mk3 models that have been updated on this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Able to harness the power and fury of the storm, the Stormsmiths wreak havoc on the battlefield.

The Khadorans came over the hill and the sky lit up with lightning. You couldn't even hear them screaming over the thunder.

  • Stormcall - Attacks with this weapon ignore cover, concealment, and Stealth.
  • Surge (★ Attack) - When this model makes a Surge special attack, select another friendly Stormsmith Stormcaller within 20" of it. This model can then target up to two models intersected by any line drawn between its base and that of the selected Stormsmith Stormcaller. This model then makes a Storm Strike attack against each model targeted, ignoring the RNG of this weapon. A model can be targeted only once per Surge special attack. Surge damage rolls are simultaneous.
  • Triangulation (★ Attack) - When this model makes a Triangulation special attack, choose two other friendly Stormsmith Stormcallers. If at the time this model makes this special attack it and the other two Stormsmiths are within 20" of each other, this model can target up to three models whose bases are within the triangular area between all three Stormsmiths. This model then makes a Storm Strike attack against each model targeted, ignoring the RNG of this weapon. Models can be targeted only once per Triangulation special attack. If this model and the chosen models are not all within 20" of each other when this model makes this special attack, nothing happens.

Thoughts on Stormsmith Stormcaller

Stormsmith Stormcaller in a nutshell

Despite their look of electric wizards Stormcallers are actually a type of veteran gun armed infantry who get to shoot stealth models and come with a rock-bottom price tag. If you are not using them as point-filler, you can get a bunch of capable combat solos who can score flags and contest scenario elements quite well.

They shoot adequately on their own but if they have friends and spread out, their abilities essentially add to their ROF in quite a odd way. Usually surge and triangulate are limited by order of activation of other Stormsmiths, with 1 needing to run to get a good position so the other 2 to do work.

A Stormsmith is unlikely to crack armour on its own and it should always be focusing its efforts on similarly costed low armour infantry.

Special mention goes to these guys in Strange Bedfellows where they both benefit from and cheaply trigger Swift Vengeance. Allowing them to set up their attacks better with free movement.

Combos & Synergies

  • Nemo2's Veteran Leader ability boosts their MAT to OK level, while their RAT to Gun Mage level in his CMD zone.
  • You can get them free in the Storm Division theme. However as 1 of the cheapest things you can take for free this isn’t advised.

The Lightning Posse:

  • Firefly and Stormguard for extra lightning damage (and Nemo3 on feat turn)
  • Storm Strider for extra accuracy, plus another source for Surge or Triangulation.
  • Stormblade Infantry's command attachment counts as a Stormsmith for special attacks. The Stormwall's Lightning Pods also count as one Stormsmith for these purposes.
  • They of course combo with each other. Your maximum allowance gives you nine of them - for about the price of a minimum unit of other models.

In Strange Bedfellows

As mercenaries and convergence models the Storm Callers lose access to some support but gain other valuable options.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • As far as single-wound point fillers go, they have few drawbacks apart from paper armour. You often get way more than what you paid for.
  • Setting up their attack types requires more of your list being dedicated to Stormsmith’s mitigating the value of taking just 1 as a points filler. But chances are, you already planned on bringing a Storm Strider, or a Stormblade Infantry CA or two anyway.

Tricks & Tips

  • They're solos so direct buff spells, like Deadeye, are ineffective on them.
  • If you run a couple of Stormsmiths to set up triangulation you can get a lot more shots off.
    • Don't be afraid to run one behind enemy lines so the other two can stand still and aim during the triangulation.
  • Their greatest boon is ignoring Stealth, but they're also useful against models with Dig In and/or Incorporeal.
  • Surge and Triangulation are not affected by abilities that decrease the RNG of your guns.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Electricity      (Edit)

  • When electricity arcs/leaps, you ignore models with Immunity:Electricity. The arc "skips" them.
  • If you attack a model with Immunity:Electricity, the arc/leap won't go anywhere at all. The arc is "grounded".
  • Incorporeal models do not have Immunity: Electricity (they just ignore non-magical damage). As such electricity can arc/leap to and from incorporeal models.

Rules Clarification : Disruption      (Edit)

  • If a model is disrupted, it cannot get focus for any reason. Whether the rule says 'allocate', 'gain', 'receive' or 'give' ... Disruption stops it all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Despite being unable to channel spells, a warjack can still be the target of spells just fine.

Rules Clarification : Stormcall - None yet. (Edit)

Surge.jpg
Triangulation.jpg
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Surge and Triangulation     (Edit)

  • In a Triangulation, all three Stormcallers must be within 20" of the other two. You can't string them out in a line 40" wide.
  • If there aren't enough Stormcallers within 20" then you don't get to make any attacks at all. Measure before you declare the attack!
  • You need LOS to your target(s), but not to other Stormcallers.
    • In the first screenshot, the attacking stormsmith is using Surge and can target anyone that is touching the white line, regardless of range. However he does not have LOS to the red models, so can't target them.
    • In the second screenshot, the attacking stormsmith is using Triangulation and can target the green Slayer because it is just within the triangle. However he does not have LOS to the red Slayer.
