Cryx Satyxis Character Solo

Found in the maelstrom of battle, her laughter punctuated by the crack of her pistols as she sows chaos and death, Severa Blacktide is a legendary Satyxis warrior. Blacktide is the finest Satyxis gunslinger alive and is counted among the premier gun mages in western Immoren. Each bullet through a rival gun mage’s skull or heart serves as another reminder that she has yet to meet her equal and perhaps never will.

Abilities

  • Gunfighter - This model can use its ranged weapon(s) even while in melee, but with limitations. Click here to learn more.
  • Tough - When this model is disabled, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, remove 1 damage point from this model; it is no longer disabled and becomes knocked down. While knocked down this model loses Tough.
  • Elite Cadre [Satyxis Gunslingers] - Friendly Satyxis Gunslingers models gain Run & Gun (as below).
  • Pistoleer - Range attack damage rolls made by this model targeting a model in melee with this model are boosted.
  • Reciprocate - When this model is missed by an enemy ranged attack, immediately afterwards it can make one basic ranged attack against the attacking model.
  • Run & Gun - If this model destroys an enemy with a ranged attack during its activation, at the end of its activation it can make a full advance.

Weapons

  • Magelock Pistol (x2) - 10" range, POW 10 guns
    • Damage Type: Magical
    • Attack Type - Each time this weapon is used to make an attack, choose one of the following special rules:
      • Black Penny - this weapon/attack ignores the "target in melee" DEF bonus.
      • Ghost Shot - This model ignores LOS, concealment, and cover when making attacks with this weapon.
      • Heart Seeker - Gain an additional die on damage rolls resulting from this attack. Discard the lowest die in each roll.
    • Chain Attack : Vortex Blast - If this model hits the same enemy model with both its initial attacks with this weapon, after resolving the attacks it can immediately make an additional ranged attack vs that model. If the attack misses, nothing happens. If it hits, push models within 2" of the model hit 2" directly towards it in the order you chose. Then center a 3" AOE on the model hit and everyone in the AOE suffers a POW 12 damage roll. Models boxed by Vortex Blast are RFP'd.

Thoughts on Severa Blacktide

Severa Blacktide in a nutshell

A character Satyxis Gunslinger, Severa brings strong magical attacks with some utility to the table. Run & Gun is an incredibly powerful ability that makes Satyxis Gunslingers a much more effective unit. Her shot types give her many options to choose from while Vortex Blast gives her a rather unique effect on the table.

Vortex Blast
The damage from Vortex Blast is still ranged attack damage, so ranged protection buffs will work normally. For instance, models with Deceleration will get +2 ARM vs it.

What is more interesting is that it stacks with Attack Type, and if you choose Heart Seeker all your Vortex Blast damage rolls will get a discard die too.

If you're in melee, Pistoleer means you get boosted damage on all the Vortex Blast damage - just be careful though, if you're close enough to use Gunfighter then you're close enough to kill Severa with her own Vortex!

Lastly, note that she can't trigger Gun and Run from a Vortex Blast, because it RFPs on boxed. (As of the 2018.09 errata)

Combos & Synergies

  • She likes anyone who can put down a damaging template, such as Breath of Corruption or Void Field, which she can then drag models into with the Vortex and cause an auto-point of damage.
  • She likes Scaverous' Feast of Worms spell because that puts down a -2 ARM template (making Vortex Blast effective POW 14) and her Vortex will drag more models into his soul-gathering area.
  • She likes DEF raising skills like Skarre2's Feat when you find yourselve in a firefight against shooting infantry with average RAT. This might be risky but may prevent to be shot at by enemy models at all as your opponent might not want to lose more men than you in this situation.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Watch out for models with Shield Guard because they can use that to "break" her Chain Attack.

Tricks & Tips

  • Unless you're in melee with something that can't be targeted by ranged attacks, you should never make a melee attack. You have Pistoleer!
  • Dodge (which she gets from the Scourge theme) triggers before her Reciprocate ability.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Attack Type and/or Arcane Savant     (Edit)

  • If you forget to declare your Attack Type before rolling the attack, and you and your opponent can't agree on a fair fix, then the Judge's Policy is that the first listed Attack Type is the one that will be used.
  • If your target can only be targeted by certain kinds of attack (ie a Menoth warjack with Passage), you can first choose the correct Attack Type (ie Magical Damage vs Passage) and then that allows you to target it. The Attack Type selection and target declaration both occur at Step 1 (Refer Appendix A). (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Black Penny      (Edit)

  • You ignore the "Target in Melee" DEF bonus, but if you miss you still need to randomly reassign the shot as per normal.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Ghost Shot      (Edit)

  • Ignore LOS (Edit)
    • Since you ignore LOS, you can target models in your back arc. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Although you ignore concealment/cover, you don't ignore any other bonuses models get "from" them (such as Prowl).
  • You don't ignore Stealth's "auto-miss" rule.

Rules Clarification : Heart Seeker - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Chain Attack      (Edit)

  • Some Chain Attacks generate a Power Attack (such as Chain Attack: Throw. These Chains can be used after charging, even though Power Attacks normally can't be used after a charge. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Buying extra attacks with fury or focus cannot trigger a Chain Attack - only initial attacks can trigger it.
  • If you have 3 weapons but only 2 of them are associated with the Chain Attack, then you can make that 3rd initial attack at any point without it preventing the Chain Attack from triggering.
Also, interrupting your initials to resolve the Chain Attack will not prevent you taking the 3rd initial.
For example, the Cryx Nightmare has two Claws with a Chain Attack, plus some Tusks. When he makes his initial attacks he can go:
    • [Claw] - [Tusks] - [Claw] - [Chain Attack] ... even though the two Claw attacks weren't sequential.
    • [Claw] - [Claw] - [Chain Attack] - [Tusks] ... even though he did the Chain Attack before getting to his initial Tusk.
    • [Tusks] - [Claw] - [Claw] - [Chain Attack]
    • He cannot go ... [Claw] - [Claw] - [Tusks] - [Chain Attack] ... because you must resolve the Chain Attack as soon as it's triggered, or not at all.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Vortex Blast      (Edit)

  • The damage roll from Vortex Blast is ranged attack damage, so stuff like Deceleration works vs it.
  • Severa only
Because the Vortex is part of a ranged attack, this means
    • You can use an Attack Type on Vortex Blast attack. If you choose Heart Seeker, you'll get a discard die for everyone in the AOE.
    • If the Vortex kills something, that will trigger Run & Gun.
    • Pistoleer stacks with Vortex Blast.
    • (Infernal Ruling for the all of the above)
  • Not blast damage (Edit)
    • Due to the way it is worded, this spell/weapon does full POW to all models in the AOE. It is not blast damage and it is not halved.
    • For the same reason, it doesn't do "two damage rolls to the model directly hit". (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Knockdown      (Edit)

  • Knockdown (Edit) - Remember, knockdown only prevents what it says it does. Refer to the Knockdown page for a recap of what a model can/can't do.

Rules Clarification:  : Gunfighter      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

General
  • You cannot Aim if you start your activation in melee. (Infernal Confirmation)
  • A free strike with a ranged weapon still gets the +2 to hit and boosted damage (I'm pretty sure - I'd like to double check it though).

Targeting

  1. Outside of melee
    • If the Gunfighter isn't in melee, and didn't charge this turn, then it shoots just the same as a normal model.
  2. In melee, but didn't charge
    • If it didn't charge, it can target anyone it's "in melee" with.
    • This can be any model in the Gunfighter's melee range, plus any models that have the Gunfighter in their melee range.
    • If a Gunfighter kills all the enemies it is in melee with, and still has the ability to make more ranged attacks, then those attacks just follow the normal Ranged Attack rules. (Infernal Ruling)
  3. Charged into melee
    • If it did charge, its initial attacks can only target models that are in the Gunfighter's melee range.
    • If all models in the Gunfighter's melee range are killed before it makes its initial attacks, it loses any unspent initial attacks. (Infernal Ruling)
    • However if it can purchase additional attacks (via Reload for instance) and/or get free attacks (via Black Spot for instance), then those non-initial attacks can target anyone it's "in melee" with, as per #2 above.
  4. Other targeting notes
    • Remember, you can never be "in melee" with a friendly model, so a Gunfighter can pretty much never choose to target a friend while it's in melee.
    • If the gunfighter is unengaged, it can still shoot a friendly model, which would just be a normal ranged attack.
    • Gunfighter doesn't change the RNG of your gun, it just provides you an ability to use it while in melee and imposes some targeting restrictions.
      • If you're affected by a debuff that reduces your RNG to 1", that will further limit who you can target.
      • If you're affected by a debuff that reduces your RNG to 0", you cannot make attacks (refer 'Weapon Statistics', page 19 of rulebook).

Attack Roll

  • You use the Gunfighter's RAT for the attack roll.
  • Gunfighters do not ignore the Cover/Concealment bonus. (Infernal Ruling)
  • How the +4 DEF bonus for "being in melee" works with Gunfighters is:
    • they always ignore it vs enemies, because the "point of origin of the attack is in melee with the target".
    • they never ignore it vs friendlies, because you cannot be in melee with a friendly target.
  • Obviously, if the Gunfighter isn't actually in melee with the enemy target, then the Gunfighter rules don't apply. So they do get the +4 DEF bonus as if it were a normal ranged attack (because it is).

Incorporeal Gunfighters

  • Note that enemy models without magic weapons can't hurt you in melee, but they can engage you.
  • If they engage you then you're in melee and your target selection is limited to just models in melee (as explained above).

Gunfighter + an AOE weapon

  • If you miss then the AOE will deviate as per the normal AOE rules. Not very far, though, considering the max distance you'll be apart is 2".
  • If you use an AOE weapon to make a free strike, you get the +2 to hit and you get boosted damage against everything under the blast template.

Gunfighter + a spray weapon

  • Who you can target with the spray is limited as described above, but you get to put the whole spray template down and potentially hit models well outside the melee.
  • If you use a spray weapon to make a free strike, you get the +2 to hit and you get boosted damage against everything under the spray template.

Units of Gunfighters

  • If a unit of Gunfighters successfully charge, but someone else in their unit kills their charge target before they get a turn to attack, then they may redirect their attack.
  • Redirected attack:
    • If they're still engaged, their initial attack (s) must be vs someone in their melee range.
    • If they're still engaged, but no one is in their own melee range, they don't get any initial attacks.
    • If they're unengaged, they are now free to shoot anyone within the gun's normal range.

Other interactions

  • Gunfighter vs Point Blank (Edit)
    • If a model has both Gunfighter and Point Blank, then you should declare whether you're using it as a ranged attack or melee attack whenever you shoot the gun. Because that can limit what other initial/additional attacks you can make. (Infernal Ruling)
    • These two abilities are subtly different, but it's an important difference.
    • Gunfighter allows you to make ranged attacks while in melee.
    • Point blank allows you to make melee attacks with your ranged weapon.
      • Since you can't make both ranged and melee attacks in the same turn, a Gunfighter model has a choice of either initial melee attack(s) or initial ranged attack(s). (unless it has Virtuoso or something).
      • Whereas a Point Blank model chooses to make initial melee attacks, and then gets to make attacks with both weapons.
    • Furthermore, the types of bonuses, penalties, and special effects you (or your opponent) can trigger will change dramatically:
      • Any buffs/triggers on ranged attacks (such as Evasive, Shield Guard, Deadeye, etc) will affect Gunfighter attacks, but not Point Blank attacks.
      • Any buffs/triggers on melee attacks (such as Battle Lust, Riposte etc) will affect Point Blank attacks, but not Gunfighter attacks.
  • Gunfighter & Cavalry ( Edit )
    • A cavalry model that charges then makes a Gunfighter attack will not gain a boosted charge attack roll, because a ranged attack is not a charge attack. (Infernal Ruling)
    • You also won't gain a boosted charge damage roll, as per normal for a Gunfighter.
  • Gunfighter vs RNG modifiers (Edit)
    • Unlike what most people might tell you, Gunfighter doesn't have a "range", it just lets the model make ranged attacks while in melee. The gun's actual RNG is unaffected though, until you put something like Windstorm (-5 RNG) on it. Then what happens is:
    1. If the gun is RNG 7, Windstorm will reduce it to 2". Thus it won't affect any Gunfighter attacks.
    2. If the gun is RNG 6, Windstorm will reduce it to 1". Thus you can only make Gunfighter attacks vs models within 1" (if you can - charging Gunfighters may be more limited).
    3. If the gun is RNG 5, Windstorm will reduce it to 0". Thus you can't make any attacks as per 'Weapon Statistics' (page 19 of the core rulebook).
    (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Elite Cadre      (Edit)

  • Elite Cadre bonuses persist even after the model dies.
  • Elite Cadre bonuses can apply to teammates in multiplayer games.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Pistoleer      (Edit)

  • "Gunfighter attack damage roll" means "A damage roll caused by a Gunfighter attack".
It does not mean "Attack rolls and damage rolls for Gunfighters".

Rules Clarification : Reciprocate - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Sprint and/or Run & Gun     (Edit)

  • You cannot use this ability after an out-of-activation attack (such as Countercharge), only during real activations. (Locked thread)
  • You can't purchase additional attacks after the move, because you can only buy attacks during your Combat Action and by definition "the end of your activation" happens after "your Combat Action".
  • Differences
    • With Sprint, you cannot trigger other abilities that also occur "at the end of activation" (such as Reposition), because Sprint includes the phrase "and then its activation ends". Click here for a detailed explanation
    • Run & Gun doesn't have this restriction.
    • Run & Gun won't trigger if you RFP the model, but Sprint will.
