99% of this website is about Mark 3 (mk3), which is the previous edition of the game (2016 to 2022). The reasons for this are explained here.
1% of the website is about Mark 4 (mk4), but only in regards to which mk3 models are useable in mk4 Prime and which are mk4 Unlimited. See Legacy Armies for more detail.
|
Prime This model is available in one Prime Army, Soldiers of Fortune. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.
Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Understanding the Statblock |
|
Mercenary - This model will work for Crucible Guard, Cygnar, Cryx, Khador, or Protectorate.
Abilities
- Battle Brothers [ Steelhead Halberdiers ] - While B2B with one or more Steelhead Halberdiers models, this model gains +2 ARM.
- Heal [d3+1] (★ Action) - RNG B2B. Target friendly living Faction model. If the model is in range, remove d3+1 damage points from it.
- Flank [ Steelhead Halberdiers ] - When this model makes a melee attack against an enemy model in the melee range of a friendly Steelhead Halberdiers model, this model gains +2 to attack rolls and gains an additional damage die.
- Leadership [ Steelhead Halberdiers ] - Friendly Steelhead Halberdier models in this model's command range gain Wall of Steel. (Wall of Steel - While a model with Wall of Steel is B2B with one or more models in its unit, it gains +2 ARM.)
- Reinforcements [Steelhead] - During your Maintenance Phase, return to play d3 small-based friendly destroyed Steelhead Grunts to play. Models return with 1 unmarked damage box. Place the returned Grunts completely within this model's command range, and completely within 3" of another model in their unit. Returned Grunts must forfeit their Combat Action the turn they are returned to play.
- Set Defense - A model in this model's front arc suffers -2 on charge, slam power attack, and impact attack rolls against this model.
Weapons
- Pistol - 8" range, POW 10 ranged attack
- Halberd - 2" reach, P+S 11 melee attack
- Powerful Charge - This model gains +2 to charge attack rolls with this weapon.
Theme Forces
- Other Factions
- Mercenary models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.
- Aside from that, there are a few themes that will change what Faction this model counts as (and thus what "friendly Faction only" buffs it can receive). They are:
Thoughts on Sergeant Nicolas Verendrye
Sergeant Nicolas Verendrye in a nutshell
Verendrye is a cheap Solo that returns Steelhead grunts to play every turn. Such an ability is unique among solos and he's an absolute bargain at four points to return d3/turn. He is the key piece of any Soldiers of Fortune army, and is the very first model you should buy if you want to play that theme force.
Combos & Synergies
- Steelhead Halberdiers - The obvious choice since he flanks with them and they are cheap enough to fuel his and Alexia's recursion engine.
- Steelhead Riflemen - Bring them back. Recurring guns are good.
- Alexia, Mistress of the Witchfire - Alexia reaps the souls of fallen Steelheads, Dr. Nic adds fresh ones back to the unit, Alexia drops Thralls, rinse and repeat.
- Lieutenant Crosse, Resistance Fighter - Adding back grunts to his Life Bound units has huge value, as they can immediately be used as shield guards and provide more souls to him.
- Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord - Adding back Halbs is good, it's even better if they are Tough.
- none of his support abilities specify ‘faction’ so he works with ranking officers looking after a unit of halberdiers - notice that battle brother also doesn’t specify ‘friendly’ so he will get the benefit if in base contact with an enemy halberdier.
Drawbacks & Downsides
- If you do have him far up the board he will be among the first to die, because his defensive stats are nothing to write home about.
- Wall of Steel doesn't help the Halberdiers much except against low POW blast damage.
- In Llaelese Resistance he can't have his Halberdiers around and is therefore useless despite being Llaelese.
Tricks & Tips
- Keep him back - as with any other reinforcing model. Due to his large command he can reinforce to a unit whose nearest model is ~11" away.
- It's probably best to pretend he doesn't have attacks for the first few turns and not to expect much from his flank in the game.

Rules Clarifications
|
Rules Clarification : Powerful Charge and/or Brutal Charge (Edit)
- If you declare a charge but move less than 3", then the attack doesn't count as a "Charge Attack" and you won't get the bonus.
|
Rules Clarification : Battle Brothers - None yet. (Edit)
|
Rules Clarification : Heal and/or First Aid (Edit)
- This ability doesn't target, so you can use it on models behind you.
- When Heal is used as a magic ability, it bypasses anti-spell stuff that hinge on the word "target" (such as Spell Ward or Arcane Vortex).
|
|
Rules Clarification : Reinforcements (Edit)
- Reinforcements is resolved at Step 3 of the Maintenance Phase "Resolve all other effects". This is simultaneuous with stuff like Vengeance or the 2019 Steamroller healing objective, so you get to choose the order.
- Although Reinforced models have to forfeit their Combat Action, they can still have out-of-activation attacks. Such as Vengeance.
Return/Add to Play - Typical (Edit)
- If you're returning/adding multiple models simultaneously, they are placed sequentially. Often this will let you leapfrog the "within 3" of [x]" requirement.
- If you're adding models to a unit, then typically there is no limit and you can go over the unit's starting size. However, some abilities do have a limit (such as Stir the Dead)
If you're returning models to a unit, then you're limited by how many there are in the "dead but not removed from play" pile. (See Add, Return, and Remove From Play for further detail.)
- If you're adding more models than you started with, then in a Tournament you must physically own the correct models - proxies are not allowed in tournaments. (Locked thread)
Return/Add to Play - Other Units (Edit)
-
"Return to Play" and "Add to Play" are quite simple if you only return models to your own unit (like Blood-Bound) or only return independent models (like Thagrosh1's feat). But if you're returning/adding models to other units, then click to read more. [Show/Hide]
- If you can return multiple troopers at once, they don't all have to be the same unit. Spread the love around.
- Troopers must return to their original unit. Even if you have two units of the same type (such as two units of Convergence Eradicators) then you can't have 4 die from unit [A] and return them all to unit [B].
- If your rule is something like "return d3 models to units within CMD range" (Old Witch3) then it is d3 models total, not d3 models to each and every unit.
- If your rule is something like "spend 1 soul to return 1 Grunt" (Enigma Foundry) then it doesn't matter where the souls came from originally. Think of them like currency, in this case.
- You can Return models even after a unit is reduced to just Attachments (Weapon or Command)
- If your Return ability lets you return a Leader or Officer model, then they will immediately become the unit commander and redefine the "in formation" bubble.
- If your Return ability only allows Grunts, then the Grunt will not be field promoted when he arrives.
This means that, in the unusual scenario where the Leader model has different wargear to the Grunts (such as Cygnar Stormguard), then that wargear is effectively 'lost'.
|
|
Rules Clarification : Flank (Edit)
- You can gain the Flank bonus vs knocked down/stationary models (refer to the latest Errata).
- Melee range is measured from your front arc so you cannot trigger Flank on models in your back arc.
- The target enemy doesn't need to be in the Flanker's LOS, just their melee range.
- Most of the time if something is in your melee range then it is so close it's in your LOS too, and the difference is meaningless.
- But if you have 2" reach and you're jammed up in B2B with a bunch of closely-spaced enemies, you'll find your LOS is blocked. In this case, you might be able to trigger Flank on an enemy model that is "hiding" behind that front row of jammers, even though you don't have LOS to it.
- Flank is not tied to a specific weapon, so Mount attacks and Power Attacks can benefit as well.
- If you have two sources of Flank they are still giving you the bonus from the Flank rule so do not stack. (Infernal Ruling)
- If the target moves in/out of the Flanker's melee range between the attack roll and the damage roll (for instance if you throw it) then you need to reassess whether you get the Flank bonus for the damage roll. (Infernal Ruling)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Leadership (Edit)
- If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
- See specific models for case-by-case Infernal Rulings.
- If you have two Leaders handing out different buffs (such as Iona's Leadership giving Dodge, and the Wolf Rider Champion's Leadership giving Prowl) then the benefits do stack - they'll get both Dodge and Prowl. (Infernal Ruling)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Wall of Steel (Edit)
- If you're slammed or thrown into a model with Wall of Steel, you'll immediately benefit. So you'll get the ARM bonus vs the slam/throw damage, too!
- It's not possible to be B2B with someone at the same time you move, so you can't gain Wall of Steel at the same time you enter a damaging template (such as Covering Fire).
- No, you cannot move an infinitely small distance and thus travel in an arc. This is Warmachine, not calculus.
- However, if you can move through a model, ignore the above.
|
Rules Clarification : Set Defense - None yet. (Edit)
