How usable this model is in Mk IV depends on the Faction:
  • Infernals: This model can be used in the Prime army and/or the Unlimited mode.
  • Mercenary: This model can only be used in the Unlimited mode.

You can view the Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.
Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Once a senior member of Cygnar's infamous Inquisition, Orin Midwinter has come out of hiding to reclaim his place of power as the noose closes around the country that hunted him. Specialized in hunting spell-casters, Midwinter uses his arcane energy to draw power from enemy wizards, suppress their magic, or simply strike them down with arcs of lightning.

Abilities

  • Arcane Vortex - This model can immediately negate any spell that targets it or a model within 3" of it by spending 1 power token. The negated spell does not take effect, but its COST remains spent.
  • Inquisitor's Talisman - This model begins the game with three power tokens. During its activation, this model can spend power tokens to make additional melee attacks or to boost attack or damage rolls. It can make one additional attack or boost one roll for each token spent.
  • Magic Ability [ 7 ] - This model can cast spells. Normally this uses up the model's Combat Action and as such is limited to one spell per activation, but exceptions do exist.
  • Marked Soul - This model is a Marked Soul.

(★ Attack) 10 - 10 (Electric) - Yes
A model hit by Chain Lightning suffers a POW 10 electrical damage roll, and lightning arcs from that model to d3 consecutive additional models. The lightning arcs to the nearest model it has not already arced to within 4" of the last model it arced to, ignoring this model. Each model the lightning arcs to suffers a POW 10 electrical damage roll. Lightning arc damage rolls are not considered to have been caused by an attack. Chain Lightning damage rolls are simultaneous.

This model gains stealth for one round.

Theme Forces

  • Infernals
    • Dark Legacy. He doesn't use up your "Up to one Mercenary solo" in this theme.
    • Hearts of Darkness. He can be included no matter which warcaster leads the theme.
  • Other Factions
    • Mercenary/Minion models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.

Thoughts on Orin1

Orin1 in a nutshell

Orin is a well priced, multi-purpose solo who brings a lot of utility on board for his points. He can clear infantries and support pieces with Chain Lightning, unless said models are presented with a lot of ARM. His attack is magical to boot with a 2" reach. On top of this he comes pre-equipped with three Arcane Vortexes in his pocket that will stop your opponent from getting any ideas about debuffing your precious stuff. He often finds his way into Khador lists to cover the above mentioned weak points of the faction.

Combos & Synergies

  • He usually stands near a colossal, warcaster or a battle engine brandishing his No-Magic button.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Not super useful against high ARM, but boosted POW 10's occasionally help out.
  • Orin can't negate CTRL spells, or those which aren't target a model nearby (like spells that work in a CTRL area, or sprays that target a model outside his 3" bubble)
  • If the enemy has strong offensive spells, he becomes a priority target.
  • Standing within 3" of (usually low DEF) models you want to defend from spells is often a danger zone for electro leaps, slams, sprays, and other threats.

Tricks & Tips

  • One power token left is generally enough to convince the enemy not to sling spells near Midwinter.
  • After the third turn, he's usually ok to go spend tokens killing things
  • Save damage boosts for squishy solos.
  • Read the clarifications for Arcane Vortex.
  • To hit high DEF targets like Eiryss, Angel of Retribution run one of your infantry to within 4" of her and chain lightning it in the back (you shoudn't need to boost here unless you're using Nyss). You'll always get one arc off - which means you flash-fry Eiryss if she's nearest (and this is worth spending a damage token on).
  • Every once in awhile, you may use his power tokens to buy and boost melee attacks. Don't forget this is allowed.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Arcane Vortex      (Edit)

  • Warjacks and warbeasts can spend focus or fury, outside of their activation, to use Arcane Vortex. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Mulg spends fury to use it, he is not forced for fury. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Arcane vortex can be used to counter spells with "Range: Self". (Infernal Ruling)
  • Some spells do not have a target, mostly CTRL area spells (such as Siege's Foxhole) but also some (★ Action) (such as Ragman's Death Field). These cannot be cancelled by Arcane Vortex. Infernal Ruling)
  • The "Cost" for non-warcaster models includes stuff like "using your special action" or "killing a Mind Bender Drudge."
  • Arcane Vortex triggers at step 3 of the spellcasting sequence. (Resolve effects that occur when a model is targeted by a spell.) (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a channeled spell is cancelled, it doesn't count as being channeled, so the channeler can't trigger stuff like Reaction Drive or Spell Martyr. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There are a couple of odd spells:
    1. (Primal Shock and Essence Blast) - Both these spells "Choose" model A, then gets to "Target" model B with an attack. In this case you can trigger Arcane Vortex only when model B is targeted.
    2. (Crevasse) - This spell attacks model A, then gets to use model A to make another attack vs model B. In this case you can trigger Arcane Vortex only when model A is targeted.
(Infernal Ruling for both of the above.)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Inquisitor's Talisman      (Edit)

  • You cannot buy melee attacks after casting a spell, due to the "The rules for these special attacks (Chain Lightning) indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any." rule
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Combat Action
Nearly all Magic Ability spells require the spellcaster to use their Combat Action to cast the spell. As such it is not an "at any time" ability (like it is when warcasters/warlocks cast spells). This means ...
  • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You cannot make initial ranged or initial melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
  • You cannot buy additional melee/ranged attacks after using a MA special attack. Refer to the core rulebook, "Special attacks listed as a rule of the model itself are neither melee attacks nor ranged attacks. The rules for these special attacks indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any."
  • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Non-Combat Action
There are a few models that can use a Magic Ability without using their Combat Action. These models get around all the restrictions listed above.
  • Models with Geomancy or Necromancy can use a Magic Ability at "any time" just like a warcaster/warlock.
  • Models with Battle Wizard or Necrophage can make melee attacks then get a bonus "free" spell.
  • Models with Combat Caster can cast a spell before charging, then do a normal charge + melee attack.
  • Note that Battle Wizards, Combat Casters, etc have the option to use their Combat Action to cast a spell. Their special rule is in addition to the normal spell casting, not instead of.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Chain Lightning      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

  • Spells that "arc" (Edit)
    • For spells that cause damage to "leap" or "arc" to adjacent models (Chain Lightning, Eruption of Spines, Ashes to Ashes, etc) ...
    • The damage is from a spell, so it is magical damage. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Steamroller flags are models, and so are eligible to be leaped to/from (although they won't be damaged by the spell). (Infernal Ruling)
      • Check whether your spell specifies "enemy model" or just "model", because as of Steamroller 2017 flags are not enemy or friendly.
  • Not considered an attack & "Non-attack damage roll" (Edit)   [Show/Hide]
    • There are two ways you can get these "non-attack" damage rolls.
      • Type 1 - A secondary damage roll that is not considered to be an attack. Some attacks create a second damage roll that is explicitly "not considered an attack" (such as Electro Leap).
(Note that although the secondary damage roll is not an attack, the original attack certainly is and will trigger stuff normally. These clarifications don't apply to the original attack.)
      • Type 2 - A damage roll that's not from an attack. Some special abilities & special actions tell you to make a damage roll without mentioning whether it is considered an attack or not (such as Vent Steam and Flak Field).
    • When it comes to other abilities that trigger on damage (such as Vengeance) both types function the same way. For brevity we'll refer to both as "Pure Damage".

    • Pure damage is not an attack, so doesn't trigger stuff like Vengeance.
    • Pure damage is not an attack, so doesn't benefit from stuff that affects 'attack damage rolls' (such as Bethayne1's feat). (Infernal Ruling)
    • Pure damage (normally) doesn't actually hit the model(s) it damages, so doesn't trigger stuff like Shock Field. (A few of them do specify they hit, though, like Warhead.)
    • Pure damage is not from an attack, but it is (normally) damage from the original model. This has two implications:
      1. It's not an attack from a weapon so:
        • it won't gain damage buffs from the weapon (such as Poison).
        • it won't gain any Damage Types from the weapon. (Infernal Ruling)
      2. It is a damage roll from a model so:
    • Exception: Some damage is not from an attack and not from a model (for example, Collateral damage). In this case, you should reverse the stuff listed under #2 above.
  • Damage Type (Edit)
    • This spell does elemental damage in addition to magical damage, not instead of magical damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • RC symbol.png

    Rules Clarification : Stealth      (Edit)

    • Stealth models are not invisible and you can target them - you'll just auto-miss most of the time.
    • You can target them with a charge.
    • You can target them with an AOE, have it auto-miss and scatter, luckily land on top of them anyway, and that will hit them.
