Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, The Thornfall Alliance. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Maximus’ legend as a warlord was already on the rise when he and his warband came upon a group of Greylords and their doom reaver slaves. Though his warband was slain, Maximus fought on. When his weapon splintered, he snatched up a fellblade from one of the fallen. The magic of the Orgoth weapon took hold, heightening his rage and giving him the maddened resolve to hack down his remaining foes in seconds. Maximus is now consumed by hatred and driven to slaughter. He occupies a place somewhere between awe and terror among his own kind, a gore-splattered hero whose legend grows with each gruesome kill.

Thoughts on Maximus

Maximus in a nutshell

A roving ball of death, Maximus hits very hard and threshes a circle of infantry around him. He is, effectively, a doom reaver. A doom reaver made of delicious, hate-and-rage-filled bacon.

His Elite Cadre added in the 2021 update makes him one of the best reasons to run Farrow Slaughterhousers in Thornfall Alliance the added durability he gives the unit in melee adds a lot to there staying power.

Combos & Synergies

As he is spell warded, it's nearly impossible to directly buff Maximus, but any caster offering generic buffs (or debuffs) can help him out.

  • Helga1 offers Dash, which can increase Max's speed, as well as giving him parry to get deeper into the enemy before starting the berserk train.
  • Calaban offers Parasite as a debuff, dropping enemy armor by three points. With Max charging something at -3ARM, it's likely going to die
  • Barnabas1 has Warpath which allows movement from his battlegroup when something gets killed in his CTRL range. With Maximus and his berserk attacks, he can potentially move an entire battlegroup just by going crazy! Barnabas also offers help via his feat, which knocks enemy models down, allowing Max to kill them without losing his Berserk due to Tough.
  • Lord Carver's feat lets him go ham on enemy infantry... as long as he hits, and kills, and doesn't leave Carver's control range. The potential for hilarious mass murder is worth the combo though.
  • Azazello grants him riposte and has an amazing feat for infantry. Beacon on his gun improves threat ranges for all.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He needs screening - the enemy will try to shoot him off the board. His defensive stats are good, but he's not invincible.
  • No matter how squishy they may be, if an enemy makes a Tough roll, it shuts down the Berserk Train. This makes Trollblood infantry a consistently bad matchup

Tricks & Tips

  • All opponents will see the pig with the fellblade and make a concentrated effort to snipe him off the board- take advantage of this and use him as a diversion. Even if he dies, he took the heat off your other models.
  • Remember that the berserk is not an optional thing, nor does it stop if you run out of enemy targets. Maximus, like the Doom Reavers he stole the sword from, continue to swing until there's nothing left to swing at, friendly and enemy alike. Keep that in mind when you're moving him into position to attack the opposing infantry; if you kill them all and leave a friendly model in melee range, he *has* to swing at it.
  • Remember that Spell Ward prevents him from being targeted by spells; this doesn't mean he can't be hit by them. If he's too close to a blast, he still takes the damage.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Berserk      (Edit)

  • Berserk attacks will generate even more Berserk attacks. You keep going until you miss, something survives, or you run out of targets.
  • Berserk grants an additional attack which by definition can only occur during your Combat Action. Therefore Berserk doesn't work on free strikes, impact attacks, etc.
  • "Immediately" means you can't save it until later in your activation. Berserk must be resolved at step 14 of the attack sequence (refer Apdx A).
  • You cannot use "Any Time" abilities while resolving the original attack, the Berserk attack, or between the attacks. Refer Apdx A.
  • Berserk doesn't trigger during a frenzy. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Berserk will not trigger if the target uses an ability to move the damage to another model (such as a warlock transfer).
    • But it will trigger if they use an ability to move the attack to a different model (such as Grim Salvation).
  • Berserk has a weird niche interaction with Agathon's abilities, which you can read here.
  • Attack-Generating Abilities (Edit)
    • From the core rulebook: When a model is granted more attacks as a result of an attack it made, it gains only one. If two or more special rules would grant the model another attack as a result of making an attack, its controlling player chooses which special rule to apply.
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities (such as Black Spot and Kill Shot) you choose to resolve one and "lose" the other (unless you trigger it again later).
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities, and one of them is compulsory (such as Black Spot and Berserk), you must choose to resolve the compulsory one. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Elite Cadre      (Edit)

  • Elite Cadre bonuses persist even after the model dies.
  • Elite Cadre bonuses can apply to teammates in multiplayer games.
  • It is possible for a model to receive multiple Elite Cadres. All will benefit the model (excluding receiving the same benefit twice). (Infernal Ruling)
  • Elite Cadre applies to both singular and plural. For instance Elite Cadre [Daughters of the Flame] will apply to Thyra even though she is only a Daughter of the Flame. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Sacred Ward and/or Spell Ward     (Edit)

  • Sacred/Spell Warded models can still be affected by spells. For instance, CTRL area spells, AOE that deviate, and/or sprays that target a nearby non-warded model.

Rules Clarification : Unyielding - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)
