As of 2018.10 the LPG articles are still a WIP. If you have a question that isn't answered, or a topic you'd like to see added, we'd like to hear about it. Post your thoughts on the Talk:Learning to Play the Game (LPG) page.

This lesson is a flow chart of how to shoot, or cast a spell, vs a target in melee.

Spell Attack vs Target in Melee[edit]

Spells follow the same general flowchart as shooting, with one obvious difference and one extra step:

Obvious difference: Abilities that are only relevant to ranged attacks (Gunfighter, Black Penny, etc) simply do not apply.

Extra Step: If your final random target is invalid for your spell (for instance, your spell only affects an enemy warjack but it ended up trying to target a warrior) then the spell just sort of fizzles and does nothing.

  • Even if the spell fizzles, the random target counts as being targetted by a spell (for the purposes of anti-magic stuff like Arcane Void), but doesn't count as being missed by a spell (for the purposes of anti-magic stuff like Whiplash)
