Driven to madness by loss and grief, the grymkin have adopted poor Lady Karianna Rose as one of their own. Lady Rose’s songs soothe the rage that feeds the grymkin nightmares, but she can also whip them into a frenzy on a whim. The worst fate awaits any who raises a hand against her, for if this delirious beauty is ever struck down, the grymkin would fall upon her attacker with swift and furious retribution.

the Statblock

Abilities

  • Ancillary Attack (★ Action) - RNG 3. Target friendly Faction warbeast. If the warbeast is in range, it immediately makes one basic melee or ranged attack. A warbeast can be targeted by an Ancillary Attack special action only once per turn.
  • Enrage (★ Action) - RNG 3. Target friendly Faction warbeast. If the warbeast is in range, it gains +2 STR for one turn.
  • Shepherd's Call (★ Action) - Remove up to 1 fury point from each friendly living Faction warbeast currently within 3" of this model.
  • Sorrowful Rampage - If this model is destroyed by an enemy attack, during your next turn friendly Faction models gain +1 to attack and damage rolls.

Thoughts on Lady Karianna Rose

Lady Karianna Rose in a nutshell

A powerful beast support solo for the Dark Menagerie theme force. She makes your beasts hit harder, manages your fury, and in a very Grymkin-esque way punishes your opponents for killing her.

Karianna Rose really does three things, each of which is likely to be useful in every game,

  • She buffs the output of your best beast pretty dramatically. This is particularly good with an already extremely cost effective or hard hitting beast such as a Skin & Moans or the Slaughterhouse.
  • She helps your warcaster manage Fury. This isn't super important in most games, since Grymkin Warlocks have high FURY stats and Grymkin warbeasts are very cost effective. It's usually preferable to ignore this mode in favour of more output, and just let a beast frenzy instead.
  • She's a solo that's strategically a nightmare to remove. +1/+1 for your entire army is no joke, on par with an Arcana. You should make sure to communicate this clearly & often to your opponent, as it will get them to focus on this little 4 point solo rather than the rest of your army. Few models allow for this kind of mindgame, use it.

Combos & Synergies

  • The Slaughterhouse, Clockatrice, and Frightmare all have good ranged attacks that love to be shot an extra time thanks to Ancillary Attack.
    • Karianna Rose is almost an essential pick when playing with the Slaughterhouse. Every one of the gargantuan's attacks are, well, gargantuan and it becomes dramatically easier to earn back its hefty price tag when you're getting an extra attack a turn or +1/+1 across the board. Plus the huge base almost always gives Karianna a good place to stand that's protected and nearby enough to a flag to score.
  • All Grymkin beasts gain a significant benefit from +2 STR, since all tend to want to get into melee at some point.
    • Skin & Moans & Cage Ragers already hit hard, this is mostly just a cherry. It can be very relevant when attacking a particularly armoured target, such as by allowing a single Skin & Moans to trade with a 20 point Khador 'jack rather than needing to commit another beast.
    • The Clockatrice especially benefits from this buff. +2 is waaay more impactful when you are going from 14 to 16 than when you are going from 19 to 21. Additionally the Clockatrice's spray can often find a target allowing Karianna to instead use Ancillary Attack. Two sprays over the top of some backline models may be more impactful than +2 STR on the frontline.
    • Gorehounds & Rattlers are both extremely cost effective for how much damage they can dish, especially with that +2.
  • Stacking bonuses to STR and POW with other casters can get you to very high damage numbers. Almost all Grymkin warlocks have a way to swing P+S by at least 2. Some of them, more than others (Heretic can do +5, Rose takes him to an incredible +7)
  • Karianna Rose naturally pairs well with Grymkin warlocks who prefer the bigger beasts, namely the Child, the Heretic, and the Dreamer.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • High-priority target. While it may be tempting to give yourself +1/+1 across the board on the initial engage, it's usually better to keep Karianna protected so you can take advantage of Ancillary Attacks to extricate beasts from combat situations in which they'd otherwise be stuck. Additionally, that +1/+1 becomes a whole lot more important when everyone's stuff is already damaged.
  • Damage which is "not considered to be from an attack" (such as Electro Leaps and collateral damage from slams and throws) can kill her without triggering Sorrowful Rampage.
    • Since she must play close to the warbeasts, she is more susceptible to it than you'd think.
  • Lady Rose is vulnerable to Remove from Play effects as they do not trigger Sorrowful Rampage either
    • Make sure you read the Remove from Play in question, some RFP triggers on destroyed, which does let Sorrowful Rampage go off
    • Remove from Play is very valuable in Mk3, meaning your opponent can easily "accidentally" have the answer to Lady Rose
  • Karianna relies on a beast's fury to fix for DEF, which isn't available when making Ancillary attacks. The order of operations can be annoying sometimes, since you need to apply your DEF fixer before Karianna activates which isn't usually preferable. When in doubt, use Enrage.

Tricks & Tips

  • She can hold flags well, opponents will not want to kill her after the lines have engaged as Sorrowful Rampage is very strong
  • On turn 1 she can strip the fury off a lot of beasts by walking 6" and using Shepherds call. It will always affect Cage Ragers that haven't been speed buffed, and it will affect any Skin & Moans and lights that you are not pushing forwards as hard as possible.
  • Ancillary attack is nuts,
    • You can use Ancillary on a frenzied beast.
    • You can use Ancillary to get in that final swing after failing to kill your target with your full-up beast.
    • You can use Ancillary to drag an additional target with the Slaughterhouse, including the extra melee attack.
    • You can Enrage/Ancillary a warbeast created with the Shadow arcana.
    • Note that the Clockatrice only gets an engaged ranged attack on the charge, not when engaged. Activate Karianna first whenever possible.
  • Killing Lady Karianna in some matches is far worse for your opponent than letting her live.
    • Place her between your important heavies and their heavy killers. They will be forced to kill Lady Rose in order to tactically progress, strategically punishing them with that +1/+1 next turn.
    • Comboed with Fortune's Path you can give your entire army +2/+2, which is insanely strong.
    • Don't attempt this tactic when your opponent has easy ways of killing her that don't require attacks. You'll be down an important solo for nothing.
    • Don't do this against Remove from Play heavy armies either.

  • You can't generate bonus attacks (such as Berserk) from an Ancillary Attack, because those bonus attacks are limited to during the attacker's activation.
