Understanding
the Statblock
  • Riot Quest - Although this model has rules which allow it to be played in Warmachine and Hordes, it was primarily designed for the Riot Quest game. RQ is set in an alternate timeline where the Infernals won the war. Some of the RQ models have a deliberately goofy aesthetic.
  • Mercenary - Gubbin will work for Crucible Guard, Cygnar, and Khador.
  • Minion - Gubbin will work for Circle and Trollbloods.

Abilities

  • Parry - This model cannot be targeted by free strikes.
  • Creeper - Gubbin can advance through other models if he has enough movement to move completely past them..
  • Catastrophic Explosion - When this model is disabled by an enemy attack, choose a point 2d6+3˝ from it and roll deviation from that point for a 4˝ AOE. Models in the AOE suffer an unboostable POW 12 fire damage roll and continuous fire
  • Dodge - When an enemy misses this model with an attack at any time except when it is advancing, this model can immediately advance 2" ignoring free strikes.

Weapons

  • Explosives - 6" range, ROF 2, 3" AOE, POW 12 ranged weapon
    • Arcing Fire - When attacking with this weapon, this model can ignore intervening models except those within 1" of the target.
    • Attack Type - Each time this weapon is used to make an attack, choose one of the following special rules:
      • Case Cracker - The attack loses its AOE, and becomes POW 7. But when you calculate damage, halve the base ARM stat of the model directly hit.
      • High-Explosive - Blast damage caused by this is POW 10.
      • Timed Charge - This model gaines Reposition [5"] this turn. (Reposition [5"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, this model can advance up to 5", then its activation ends.)

Thoughts on the Gubbin

New model - This article is a Work In Progress
This model has only recently been released, and the content in the "Thoughts On" section is based more on theory-machine than actual gameplay experience.

Please don't delete this warning unless you (1) have played several games with the final rules (games with CID rules don't count) and (2) you've reviewed this article and it mostly(★) matches your experiences.

(★) Bearing in mind that other editors may make suggestions you don't think are the "best" but that doesn't make them "wrong". Don't delete stuff just because you disagree with it, please.

Gubbin in a nutshell

He throws two boom sticks each turn, one of which will be a timed charge so he can scurry back behind his friends.

Combos & Synergies

  • Durgen Madhammer - Gubbin brings two powerful AOEs per turn, so natually there is synergy between the two.
  • Any Snipe caster helps.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • If there are two things Mercenaries do not lack for it is blast weapons and solo choices. Thus, he competes against the entire roster of merc solos in any theme he's allowed in, and he doesn't match up against the best ones.

Tricks & Tips

  • Case Cracker is helped by ARM debuffs. Bring Hermit and Aiyana

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Parry - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Creeper - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Catastrophic Explosion      (Edit)

  • Roll the 2d6, then pick a point, then roll deviation. You can't pick a point before you know the result of the 2d6. (Locked Thread)
  • Pick a point 2d6+3" away from the edge of your base. Measure directly outwards from your base edge, not at a tangent or other weird angle. Once you've picked that point you deviate from there, then center the AOE on that new point. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Fire      (Edit)

  • Moving into "Shallow water" standard terrain does not cause continuous fire to expire. It's magic fire.
    • You can always use non-standard terrain if you agree with your opponent before the game starts, however.
  • A weapon can inflict continuous fire without itself being a fire damage weapon (for example, the Helios's fists). In this case, the attack can hurt models with Immunity:Fire it just won't apply the continuous effect.
  • In terms of which player's clock is running down during the Maintenance Phase: The active player will roll for expiration of all the continuous effects. Then the inactive player will roll for all the damages of the continuous effects. (Judge Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Dodge      (Edit)

  • Dodge triggers after any missed attack - melee, ranged, or magic.
  • An enemy model with 2" melee range that is B2B with you before you Dodge, will be exactly 2" away afterwards, and thus will be able to attempt a 2nd melee attack.
  • If you're missed by an AOE attack, but it doesn't deviate very far and still hits you then: Dodge still triggers, but the AOE does damage before you get the Dodge movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Dodge plus Riposte (Edit)
    • If a model has both Dodge and Riposte, you can choose whether to dodge or riposte first. Appendix A Step 13 applies here, because the controller of the model being attacked is not the active player.

Rules Clarification : Arcing Fire      (Edit)

  • Arcing Fire lets you ignore models but not terrain. You don't ignore clouds, forests or buildings.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Attack Type and/or Arcane Savant     (Edit)

  • If you forget to declare your Attack Type before rolling the attack, and you and your opponent can't agree on a fair fix, then the Judge's Policy is that the first listed Attack Type is the one that will be used.
  • If your target can only be targeted by certain kinds of attack (ie a Menoth warjack with Passage), you can first choose the correct Attack Type (ie Magical Damage vs Passage) and then that allows you to target it. The Attack Type selection and target declaration both occur at Step 1 (Refer Appendix A). (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Armor-Piercing and/or Case Cracker     (Edit)

Rules Clarification : High-Explosive - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Timed Charge      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • You cannot trigger abilities that occur "at the end of activation" (such as Sprint) after resolving Reposition, because your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling) See also this article for a detailed explanation.
  • You cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground) during a Reposition. Because you can't trigger it while moving, and after moving your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
    • This holds true even if it's a unit with multiple Reposition moves. (Infernal Ruling)
