Boxed Set
Gubbin comes in the Riot Quest starter set, alongside 4 other solos: Dez, Eiryss, Fortune Hunter of Ios, Balthazar Bamfist, and Sir Dreyfus the Storm Knight.

At the time of writing (2020.10) they are not available for individual purchase. However in Gubbin's case there exists an alternate sculpt used as prize support, which you may be able to to win or buy from a winner.

Understanding
the Statblock
  • Riot Quest - Although this model has rules which allow it to be played in Warmachine and Hordes, it was primarily designed for the Riot Quest game. RQ is set in an alternate and/or future timeline where the Infernals won the war. Some of the RQ models have a deliberately goofy aesthetic.
  • Mercenary - Gubbin will work for Crucible Guard, Cygnar, and Khador.
  • Minion - Gubbin will work for Circle and Trollbloods.

Abilities

  • Parry symbol.jpg Parry
  • Creeper - This model can advance through other models if it has enough movement to move completely past them.
  • Catastrophic Explosion - When this model is disabled by an enemy attack, choose a point 2d6+3˝ from this model and roll deviation from that point, with direction 4 on the deviation template pointing directly toward the rear edge of your deployment zone. Center a 4˝ AOE on the point of impact. Then remove this model from play. Models in the AOE suffer an unboostable POW 12 fire damage roll and the Fire continuous effect.
  • Dodge - This model can advance up to 2" immediately after an enemy attack that missed it is resolved unless it was missed while advancing. It cannot be targeted by free strikes during this movement.

Weapons

  • Explosives - 6" range, ROF 2, 3" AOE, POW 12 ranged weapon
    • Arcing Fire - When attacking with this weapon, this model can ignore intervening models except those within 1" of the target.
    • Attack Type - Each time this weapon is used to make an attack, choose one of the following special rules:
      • Case Cracker - This weapon's base stats become AOE - and POW 7 for this attack. When calculating damage from this attack, halve the base ARM stat of the model directly hit.
      • High-Explosive - Blast damage caused by this weapon is POW 10.
      • Timed Charge - This model gains Reposition [5"] this turn. (Reposition [5"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, a model with Reposition [5"] can advance up to 5", then its activation ends.)

Theme Forces

Thoughts on the Gubbin

Gubbin in a nutshell

He throws two boom sticks each turn, one of which will be a timed charge so he can scurry back behind his friends.

Combos & Synergies

  • Durgen Madhammer - Gubbin brings two powerful AOEs per turn, so natually there is synergy between the two.
  • Any Snipe caster helps.
  • Rahera Black spot and her feat allows up to 4 shots on 1 turn.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • If there are two things Mercenaries do not lack for it is blast weapons and solo choices. Thus, he competes against the entire roster of merc solos in any theme he's allowed in, and he doesn't match up against the best ones.
  • Including him allows you to take Malvin & Mayhem but if that’s your only reason you could instead save 3 points and get a Swamp Gobber River Raider, Gobber Chef or spend 2 points less on a Gobber Tinker who has more synergy with M&M
  • he has no melee weapon and no gunfighter (or similar) so he will never be able to make free strikes.

Tricks & Tips

  • Case Cracker is helped by ARM debuffs. Bring Hermit and Aiyana

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Parry - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Creeper - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Catastrophic Explosion      (Edit)

  • Roll the 2d6, then pick a point, then roll deviation. You can't pick a point before you know the result of the 2d6. (Locked Thread)
  • Pick a point 2d6+3" away from the edge of your base. Measure directly outwards from your base edge, not at a tangent or other weird angle. Once you've picked that point you deviate from there, then center the AOE on that new point. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Fire      (Edit)

  • If you deploy in fire hazard terrain (Burning Earth), then you get set on fire before the game starts.
Deploying a model in a hazard counts as being "put into play" in the hazard. Being put into play counts as "entering". When you enter a hazard, you trigger the hazard.
  • Moving into "Shallow water" standard terrain does not cause continuous fire to expire. It's magic fire.
    • You can always use non-standard terrain if you agree with your opponent before the game starts, however.
  • A weapon can inflict continuous fire without itself being a fire damage weapon (for example, the Helios's fists). In this case, the attack can hurt models with Immunity:Fire it just won't apply the continuous effect.
  • In terms of which player's clock is running down during the Maintenance Phase: The active player will roll for expiration of all the continuous effects. Then the inactive player will roll for all the damages of the continuous effects. (Judge Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Dodge      (Edit)

  • Dodge triggers after any missed attack - melee, ranged, or magic.
  • An enemy model with 2" melee range that is B2B with you before you Dodge, will be exactly 2" away afterwards, and thus will be able to attempt a 2nd melee attack.
  • If you're missed by an AOE attack, but it doesn't deviate very far and still hits you then: Dodge still triggers, but the AOE does damage before you get the Dodge movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If an enemy can attack you when you advance and then stop moving (such as Countercharge or Defensive Strike) and they miss you, then you can trigger Dodge (because you're no longer advancing).
  • Dodge plus Riposte (Edit)
    • If a model has both Dodge and Riposte, you can choose whether to dodge or riposte first. Appendix A Step 13 applies here, because the controller of the model being attacked is not the active player.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Arcing Fire      (Edit)

  • Arcing Fire lets you ignore models but not terrain. You don't ignore clouds, forests or buildings.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Attack Type and/or Arcane Savant     (Edit)

  • If you forget to declare your Attack Type before rolling the attack, and you and your opponent can't agree on a fair fix, then the Judge's Policy is that the first listed Attack Type is the one that will be used.
  • If your target can only be targeted by certain kinds of attack (ie a Menoth warjack with Passage), you can first choose the correct Attack Type (ie Magical Damage vs Passage) and then that allows you to target it. The Attack Type selection and target declaration both occur at Step 1 (Refer Appendix A). (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Armor-Piercing and/or Case Cracker     (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : High-Explosive      (Edit)

  • Deadly Precision vs High Explosive (Edit)
    • The +2 POW from Deadly Precision would not apply to high explosive POW (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Timed Charge      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
    • Some end-of-activation abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, it is the last thing you can do for the activation. You can not do a different "at any time" ability during or after triggering an end-of-activation ability. You cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
    • If you start resolving an end-of-activation-movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while moving, and after moving your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
    • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's end-of-activation-movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
    • If you have more than one end-of-activation ability, you have to choose which one to resolve, then your activation ends and you cannot use the other one.
    • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.
