As of 2022.08 Warmachine University has turned into an archive for Mk3 rules (3rd Edition). Refer to the Privateer Press website for all modern Mk4 (4th Edition) related content.
This site has been kept online for any players who want to continue using Mk3 rules and/or anyone who wants to compare Mk4 Legacy models to Mk3 models. Privateer Press have an official wiki that covers all their main game systems, and my understanding is that Warmachine Mk4 will be on the PP wiki.
More information can be found on the Talk:Main Page area of this wiki.

Mark IV Status: Prime - This model is available in one Prime Army, Rhul Guard. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.
- Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Once a security warjack, the Grundback Gunner has become an example of the finest Rhulic technologies. Many in western Immoren seek out the gunners only to have their non-Rhulic coin turned down. The Dwarves can be very particular when they are selling their wares and services.

Understanding the Statblock |
|
Warjack - All warjacks share the same set of special rules. Most notably being big and stompy. Click here for a newbie-friendly recap, or click here for the full rules.
Rhulic Warjack - This warjack must be controlled by a Rhulic model.

Thoughts on Grundback Gunner
Grundback Gunner in a nutshell
The Gunner is the embodiment of focus efficiency. Each Gunner you take increases your caster's effective focus by a point thanks to Powerful Attack on the gun. Boosted POW 12's kill infantry, some cavalry and multi-wound infantry, blow away lights and dent up heavies. And if you need something knocked down, they can slam. Since you can cram a lot of these into a list, people often do.
Combos & Synergies
Models that the Gunner likes:
- Warcasters rather than marshals. Seriously. A single point of Focus gives both boosted attack and damage rolls. Hitting DEF 15 troops with 22 damage on average rolls? Yes please.
- General Ossrum brings a number of useful things to the Gunner. Energizer for speed. Unstoppable Force for bulldozing shenanigans.
- Durgen Madhammer gives their gun continuous fire with his field marshal ability.
- Gorten Grundback isn't as good with them as Ossrum, but Energizer is still a very nice spell for speed.
- Balthazar Bamfist can empower the Gunner if you do choose to Marshall it - getting around the focus issue.
Drawbacks and Downsides
They are worthless in melee unless used for a slam, however Ossrum frees them up with Unstoppable Force and Durgen grants Gunfighter with his feat. With only 18 boxes, a good solid hit will often knock out either the gun or the cortex and your little gun on legs is pretty much a box of rocks at that point. At least it can go get in the way of things.
Tricks and Tips
- Run in multiples with Ossrum is where they shine. With Energizer and Unstoppable force, they become control pieces that can push enemy models into position to get sprayed or blasted. They can also walk through each other while in his CMD range.
- Gorton can park three of these behind a Rock Wall to make a handy little fortress. DEF 16, ARM 18 anyone?

Who can control this warjack
To include this mercenary warjack in your army, it must be controlled by one of the following Rhulic warcasters or marshals. Thus, to include this jack you first need to find a controller that works for your army.

Rules Clarifications
|
Rules Clarification : Powerful Attack (Edit)
- If your weapon can make multiple attacks (such as a Charger's ROF 2 gun) then you need to declare (and pay for) Powerful Attack for each attack. (Infernal Ruling)
- You must declare whether you're using Powerful Attack before making any attack rolls. If you choose not to use it on attack rolls, you can't trigger it on damage rolls. (Infernal Ruling)
- Exception: If your attack auto-misses, such as an AOE vs Stealth, then you can declare it after deviation but before making damage rolls. (Infernal Ruling)
- If you declare you're using Powerful Attack, it will apply to to-hit roll(s) and damage rolls. You can't choose to have it just boost the attack roll(s) or just boost the damage roll(s). (Infernal Ruling)
- The Powerful Attack bonus doesn't apply to "secondary" damage such as Magic Bullet or Electro Leap.
|
|
Rules Clarification : Warjack (Edit)
- The Cortex/Induction core rule means a warjack cannot have more than 3 focus at any time (maybe 4 if they're really special).
- Many abilities give out focus and don't state an upper limit (such as Convection and Empower). Despite not stating an upper limit, they are always "hard-limited" by the core rule.
- A warjack can have more than 3 focus during a turn, though. For instance, a knocked down warjack can Power Up and be Allocated 2 focus, then spend 1 to shake knockdown, then another model could Empower it back up to 3.
- Warjacks cannot spend focus outside of their activation. For instance, they can't boost free strikes or trigger Powerful Attack on Broadsides. (Infernal Ruling)
Inert warjacks
- Abilities that say they cannot be used if the model is stationary (such as Shield Guard) cannot be used while a warjack is inert, either. Refer "Warcaster Destruction", page 59 of the core rulebook.
