Cryx Blighted Trollkin Character Solo

Mk4 icon.png
Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Black Fleet. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Gerlak Slaughterborn is a hulking monster of battle. His infamous brutality has caused brave men to fall to their knees in terror at the mere sight of him, unable even to defend themselves. Leading his notorious Bloodgorgers, this horribly blighted trollkin has earned his reputation with a century of massacre. Bloodgorgers claim that if piled into the deep, the bodies of his slain would create a grisly bridge reaching all the way from Garlghast to the mainland. Cryx has found better use for Slaughterborn's death toll: necrotechs follow in his wake and pick among the cleft bodies like carrion crows. From his detritus rise mechanithralls, brute thralls, and endless other unliving soldiers of Cryx.

Thoughts on General Gerlak Slaughterborn

General Gerlak Slaughterborn in a Nutshell

Gerlak Slaughterborn is the leader of the Bloodgorgers, and is able to turn them into a wrecking crew able to scythe through infantry with a Berserk/Overtake combination.

He is scary against hordes of infantry, as he can attack one, make an Overtake move, make a Berserk attack, make another move, rinse and repeat until they're all dead or you make a bad dice roll.

Combos & Synergies

  • Most of the time he'll be taken in the Scourge of the Broken Coast theme (where he'll be free) alongside Bloodgorgers and/or Marauders.
    • Bloodgorgers - making them good is his job. He only needs to be in the same list to give them Elite Cadre.
    • To a lesser extent, Blighted Trollkin Marauders like him for the +1 to hit.
    • When taken with either Bloodgorgers or Marauders, Jussika Bloodtongue still counts as a "Bloodgorger" model, and therefore benefits from his Elite Cadre.
  • Anyone who can reliably deliver him. P+S 13 with Weapon Master can ruin a good few units' days, especially when sufficiently debuffed by Cryx's warcasters.
  • Sturgis the Corrupted or Scaverous can extend his threat range, widely broadening his area of operations.
  • Anyone who can make him hit harder (using Scything Touch or Curse of Shadows or any of our other debuffs).
    • With the amount of attacks you want Slaughterborn to be making, you want to limit the amount of 'failed attacks' you're getting out of him. Iron Lich Asphyxious can get him killing ARM 20 single-wound models even on triple-one damage rolls!
    • In addition, Deneghra, the Soul Weaver and Lich Lord Venethrax both have Mortality, which gives Slaughterborn +2/+2 to hitting and damage. Pretty good for mitigating the amount of 'failed attacks' he'll make.
      • However, in order to even make a swing, he's got to get there first.
  • The Withershadow Combine can give him Puppet Master, to reduce the odds of a bad dice roll stopping his Pacman attack.
    • Unfortunately the WSC and their reroll are not available in Scpurge, so you need to play out-of-theme for that combo, or use Eilish.
  • Remember, P+S 13 Weapon Master is the equivalent damage output of a Bane Warrior. If there's no infantry for him to mulch, Gerlak can at least make a dent in something heavier.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • You don't want him without Bloodgorgers
  • Swathes of infantry are currently rare so it's a target poor environment.
    • The addition of Weapon Master, though, gives him something to do against harder targets.

Tricks & Tips

  • It's often worth running with him rather than charging - get him into position for the Bloodgorger wave.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Grievous Wounds      (Edit)

  • GW prevents "repairs" as well as "heals".
  • It does not stop a warlock transferring damage, or stop the wounded model from being able to 'heal' someone else.
  • Does not affect models with the Massive rule.

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Berserk      (Edit)

  • Berserk attacks will generate even more Berserk attacks. You keep going until you miss, something survives, or you run out of targets.
  • Berserk grants an additional attack which by definition can only occur during your Combat Action. Therefore Berserk doesn't work on free strikes, impact attacks, etc.
  • "Immediately" means you can't save it until later in your activation. Berserk must be resolved at step 14 of the attack sequence (refer Apdx A).
  • You cannot use "Any Time" abilities while resolving the original attack, the Berserk attack, or between the attacks. Refer Apdx A.
  • Berserk doesn't trigger during a frenzy. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Berserk will not trigger if the target uses an ability to move the damage to another model (such as a warlock transfer).
    • But it will trigger if they use an ability to move the attack to a different model (such as Grim Salvation).
  • Berserk has a weird niche interaction with Agathon's abilities, which you can read here.
  • Attack-Generating Abilities (Edit)
    • From the core rulebook: When a model is granted more attacks as a result of an attack it made, it gains only one. If two or more special rules would grant the model another attack as a result of making an attack, its controlling player chooses which special rule to apply.
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities (such as Black Spot and Kill Shot) you choose to resolve one and "lose" the other (unless you trigger it again later).
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities, and one of them is compulsory (such as Black Spot and Berserk), you must choose to resolve the compulsory one. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Bloodthirst - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Swift Hunter and/or Overtake     (Edit)

  • The free move must be resolved before other abilities that involve attacks (such as Quick Work or Berserk). Refer Step 12 vs 14 in Appendix A.
  • This ability does not trigger off special attacks, only basic ones.
  • An important difference:
    • Swift Hunter can be triggered by any attack, including out-of-activation attacks.
    • Overtake only works on attacks during your Combat Action. Even stuff like Impact Attacks won't trigger it.
  • If you make a free strike during your Combat Action (for instance the enemy used a special rule to move during your Combat Action) you can trigger Overtake on that free strike. It still counts as being during your Combat Action. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Unyielding - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Leadership      (Edit)

  • If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
    • See specific models for case-by-case Infernal Rulings.
  • If you have two Leaders handing out different buffs (such as Iona's Leadership giving Dodge, and the Wolf Rider Champion's Leadership giving Prowl) then the benefits do stack - they'll get both Dodge and Prowl. (Infernal Ruling)
