Based on the Ironclad chassis and heavily modified by Sancteum armorers, Gallant is a walking instrument of righteous battle and the favored warjack of the warcaster Constance Blaize. In combat Gallant wields the mighty blade Lasting Light to strike down the enemies of Morrow as dictated by the Prayers for Battle, the holy catechism mounted onto its hull.

Mercenary - This model will work for Cygnar.
- Partisan [ Cygnar ] - When included in a Cygnar army, this model/unit is a Cygnar model/unit instead of a Mercenary model/unit.
Warjack - All warjacks share the same set of special rules. Most notably being big and stompy. Click here for a newbie-friendly recap, or click here for the full rules.
|
Tip !
Gallant has a "will work for" limitation, which is unique for Mercenary warjacks. It prevents him being taken in any Faction or theme outside of Cygnar, Mercenary, or Flame in the Darkness.
As of 2021.09 there is a bug in Warroom that lets you put Gallant in other Factions.

Construct
- Bond [ Blaize ] - If this model begins the game in Blaize's battlegroup, it is bonded to them. This model is not considered to be bonded while under your opponent's control. While this model is bonded to Blaize and in their control range, when B2B with Blaize she can not be targeted by enemy spells.
- Accumulator [Morrowan] - When it begins its activation within 3" of one or more other friendly Morrowan models, this model gains 1 focus point.
- Sacred Ward - This model cannot be targeted by enemy spells.
- Shield Guard - Once per round, when a friendly model is directly hit by a non-spray ranged attack during your opponent's turn while within 3" of this model, you can choose to have this model directly hit instead. This model is automatically hit and suffers all damage and effects. This model cannot use Shield Guard while it is incorporeal, knocked down, or stationary. The Shield Guard special rule can only trigger once per attack roll.

Theme Forces
- When taken by anyone else
Thoughts on Gallant
Gallant in a nutshell
Gallant is Constance Blaize's personal warjack. Gallant may be fielded by any caster playable in the Flame in the Darkness theme where they might find some use for him. He used to be best with Blaize, but now that she can't use her personal focus to boost his attack and damage rolls, there isn't much special there compared to what any other caster in that theme brings. Unless the opponent has defensive upkeeps, he's just an overpriced beater. If they do have defensive upkeeps, they might not cast them, which is a win
Combos & Synergies
- Constance Blaize, Knight of the Prophet makes him charge farther. It grants her Arcane Ward while the two are BTB. Gallant also lets Blaize flank off him.
- Putting him in Lieutenant Allison Jakes's battlegroup and putting Sidekick on it pushes his DEF to an impressive 15. If she runs Gallant and Blaize is your caster, he threats 14" with Energizer and Crusader's Call. Still, it's risky to have a squishy model like Jakes with a small control area running a 17 point heavy. If you do send him 14" up the board, you aren't getting him back.
- At DEF 13, Gallant is just the sort of jack Ashlynn1 likes to have forward on her feat turn. Especially if it's under Sidekick.
- Same goes for Fiona the Black. Accumulator also means she has more focus for spellcasting.
- Thamarite Advocates can top it off at no cost to a Thamarite caster, something all of them appreciate.
- Jakes2 turns Gallant up to 11 in the new Flame in the Darkness Theme. With Bullet Dodger, Escort, Sprint, and Positive Charge, Gallant becomes effectively DEF 15, ARM 19, Speed 7, MAT 9, P&S 20 with Purgation, Sprint, Dodge, Magic weapon, Immune to enemy spells, and Accumulator with most of the infantry in the theme. That's... pretty good.
Outside of Constance and/or Flames, you have to go out-of-theme to get Gallant which is ... not great.
However, if you
are deliberately playing out-of-theme, here's some ideas:
[Show/Hide]
Drawbacks & Downsides
- Expensive for a heavy warjack with no gun.
- Arguably a point too expensive.
Tricks & Tips
- None really. Fundamentally he's a simple beatstick heavy, albeit with some fancy doodads.
Other
Trivia
How can I include this warjack in my army?
Most Mercenary warjacks can go in any other Faction, as long as they're under the control of a Mercenary model.
That doesn't apply to Gallant. His "Will work for" clause restricts who he can work for. So the end result is ...
- In the Flames in the Darkness theme, he can be controlled by anyone (who is also in that theme). His Faction type will switch to match the warcaster.
- He can be taken in a Cygnar force
- in which case he is a Cygnar jack and must be controlled by a Cygnar model.
- He can be taken in a Mercenary force
- in which case he is a Mercenary jack and must be be controlled by one of the Mercenary models listed below.
- He cannot be taken in any other Faction
- not even under a Mercenary Jack Marshal/Journeyman that will work for that other faction.
- Note: There is a bug in Warroom that does allow you to put Gallant in other factions.
The standard way to include a Mercenary warjack in your army is to put it under the control of one of these models. So first you need to figure out which of these models will work for your Faction.
- Note: Other restrictions may apply (such as 'Jack Marshals can't control Colossals).

Rules Clarifications
|
Rules Clarification : Gallant
- Unlike other mercenary warjacks, Gallant can only be taken in either a Mercenary army or a Cygnar army. (Infernal Ruling)
- For example, you could have him controlled by Raluk in a mercenary force, but you can't have him controlled by Raluk in a Cryx force.
- When taken in Cygnar, he must be controlled by a Cygnar warcaster or marshal.
- When taken in Flames in the Darkness, his Faction will match the warcaster, allowing a Khador model to take him.
|
|
Rules Clarification: : Magical Damage (Edit) (Click Expand to read)
|
* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
- All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
- This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
- and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
- If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
- if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
- if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
- (Infernal Ruling)
- If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")
|
|
Rules Clarification : Purgation (Edit)
- Purgation does not ignore any buffs the upkeep spell is giving your target (you'll want something like Blessed to do that).
- Purgation applies if you're attacking friendly models with an enemy upkeep on them.
- If the upkeep expires between the attack roll and the damage roll (for instance being hit by Eiryss2's Spell Breaker), then Purgation won't be applied to the damage roll. (Infernal Ruling)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Open Fist (aka, Power Attack Throw) (Edit)
- Throw ( Edit )
- See also the Throw article for a recap of the core Throw rules.
- If a model is somehow thrown at itself (which can happen with Durst1's feat) it would not move, it would be knocked down, and it would take a standard power attack damage roll but it would not take an additional die for colliding with itself. (Infernal Ruling)
- Because you move the target model between the attack roll and the damage roll, you can get different buffs applied to the two rolls. For instance, if you throw the target in or out of a Flanking model's melee range.
- Incorporeal vs Slammed/Thrown models ( Edit )
- Incorporeal models cannot be moved by someone trying to slam them.
- Slammed models can move through Incorporeal models.
- If they have enough movement to get past them, no dramas.
- If they land on them, you move the Incorporeal model out of the way as per the Rule of Least Disturbance.
- If the Incorporeal model cannot be moved (i.e. it's a flag) then you move the slammed model out of the way, also by the rule of Least Disturbance.
- For the purposes of Collateral Damage, only the model(s) you contacted before you applied the rule of Least Disturbance count as contacted.
- The same logic applies to Throws.
- Collateral Damage
- Collateral damage cannot be boosted and is not considered damage from an attack or model. Refer page 33 of the 2021.08 version of the rules pdf. As a result:
- It doesn't trigger stuff that relies on being hit by an enemy (such as Shock Field) or damaged by an enemy (such as Vengeance).
- It doesn't get bonus damage from stuff that adds to a model's damage roll (such as Signs & Portents or Prey).
- It doesn't matter if the attacker has crippled weapon systems or aspects.
- Throw - Power Attack
- When you make a Throw Power Attack, no other abilities of the Fist weapon (such as Chain Strike) are applied unless they specifically mention Throws. (Locked Thread)
- If you do a Power Attack Throw and you choose to throw the target directly away, no deviation is rolled to determine the final position of the model. (Locked thread)
- A model that cannot be targeted by melee attacks (such as Una2's feat) cannot have models thrown at them, either. (Infernal Ruling)
- Since throwing Model [A] at Model [B] involves making a melee attack roll vs Model [B] which is out of your melee range, it technically breaks a whole bunch of core rules. (Infernal Checking)
- Even though you make a "melee attack roll" vs Model [B] you don't actually make a melee attack vs it. Also, the damage it suffers is from Collateral damage, not from the original attack. So you can't trigger stuff like Snacking from damage you did to Model B.
|
|
Rules Clarification : Shield and/or Buckler (Edit)
- The only time you lose the Shield bonus is when the weapon is crippled, or if the attack originates in your back arc. (Infernal Ruling)
- In other words, you still get the Shield bonus while knocked down or stationary.
- You don't get the Shield bonus vs stuff originating in your back arc. This includes stuff that "leaps" off models in your back arc, such as Electro Leap. (Locked thread)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Warjack (Edit)
- The Cortex/Induction core rule means a warjack cannot have more than 3 focus at any time (maybe 4 if they're really special).
- Many abilities give out focus and don't state an upper limit (such as Convection and Empower). Despite not stating an upper limit, they are always "hard-limited" by the core rule.
- A warjack can have more than 3 focus during a turn, though. For instance, a knocked down warjack can Power Up and be Allocated 2 focus, then spend 1 to shake knockdown, then another model could Empower it back up to 3.
- Warjacks cannot spend focus outside of their activation. For instance, they can't boost free strikes or trigger Powerful Attack on Broadsides. (Infernal Ruling)
Inert warjacks
- Abilities that say they cannot be used if the model is stationary (such as Shield Guard) cannot be used while a warjack is inert, either. Refer "Warcaster Destruction", page 59 of the core rulebook.
|
Rules Clarification : Construct - None yet. (Edit)
|
Rules Clarification: : Partisan (Edit) (Click Expand to read)
|
Which Faction am I?
- Partisans are Mercenary (or Minion) models unless they're taken in their "Home" Faction. For example, a Mercenary model that is Partisan [Cygnar]:
- When used in most armies it is "friendly Faction" only to other Mercenary models.
- When used in a Cygnar army it is "friendly Faction" to Cygnar models ... and stops being "friendly Faction" to any other Mercenaries in that Cygnar army.
- In a multi-caster game, Partisans count as the main army's Faction and not as a Mercenary models (if playing a Faction other than Mercaneries). (Infernal Ruling)
Attachments
- If a Partisan unit can get a special attachment from their Partisan Faction (for instance a Soulless Escort or Trollkin Sorcerer) then they can only get that attachment when they're in the Partisan Faction. They can't take it when working as a regular Mercenary. (Locked thread)
- When taken in their Partisan Faction, they can't have a Ranking Officer attached.
Partisan warcasters
- If you have a Partisan caster, you must choose whether your army is a Mercenary force or a [Partisan Faction] force. What warjacks the caster can take are then limited by your choice.
- Partisan casters can be taken in [Partisan Faction] theme forces. Refer to the main rulebook.
- Partisan casters can be fielded in multiple-caster games. (Locked thread)
See also the Category: Partisan for what happens if you mix and match Partisan casters and Merc casters in multi-caster games.
Partisans & Theme Forces (Edit)
- Partisans are Mercenary/Minion models, so there are two ways you can add them to a theme force:
- Freely: If the Partisan is on the list of allowed models, then you can take as many as you want plus another Mercenary unit/solo. (Infernal Ruling)
- They can be explicitly allowed (for example Jaws of the Wolf allows "Kayazy models/units" so Partisan Kayayz can be used freely).
- They can be implicitly allowed (for example Scourge of the Broken Coast allows "living Cryx models/units" and Partisan Cephalyx fit that criteria, so they can be used freely). (Infernal Ruling)
- Limited: If the Partisan isn't on the list of allowed models, it does use up your "Up to one Mercenary/Minion" slot, so you can only have the one.
- Whether you used option 1 or 2 above, once they're in your theme force they count as a Faction model and so:
- They can be taken as a Requistion Option (if they fit the Requistion description).
- For example Lanyssa can be taken as a free solo in the Legion of Dawn theme. (Infernal Ruling)
- They will get any theme benefit that they fit the description for.
- For example Storm Division gives all Cygnar models Immunity Electricity, so Partisan Mercs in that theme get immunity too.
- For example Nemo4's Mechaniks get Reposition [3] in Heavy Metal. (Infernal Ruling)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Bond (Edit)
- Bonds are ineffective while the model is under your opponent's control. Refer the core rulebook.
- Bonds & Themes
- If a warjack/warbeast with a bond is in that caster's battlegroup, they can be taken in any theme force. Refer the core rulebook.
- This is true even if the caster isn't a full warcaster or warlock (this interaction changed as of 2018.06).
|
|
Rules Clarification : Shield Guard and/or Shadow Guardian (Edit)
- You can't use this ability vs spells.
- You shift all effects onto the new model, including stuff that triggers on "when this attack hits".
- When you use this ability vs an AOE attack, the template moves too. Because, with reference to Apdx A, the hit 'moves' at Step 6 and the template placement is determined at Step 7.
- This ability doesn't work vs Point Blank attacks. Because Point Blank attacks are melee attacks that are made using a ranged weapon.
- On the other hand, it will work vs Gunfighter attacks.
- Shield Guard only
- Since Shield Guard specifies "opponent's turn", it can't be used against stuff that shoots in your own turn (such as Watcher or Counterblast).
- The Shield Guard does not necessarily need to be in the attacker's LOS or range.
- The Shield Guarder is always hit even if they have an ability that makes them automatically get missed, such as Stealth. (Automatically missing is determined earlier in the timing sequence than the Shield Guard moving the hit.) (Infernal Ruling)
|
|
Rules Clarification : Accumulator (Edit)
- If you have the Accumulator rule twice (for instance a Stormclad in the Hearts of Darkness theme) then you only get to apply it once, and get 1 focus. (Infernal Ruling)
- Accumulator does not allow you to go over the normal focus limit (3 for most warjacks). Refer to the Cortex rules.
- Warjacks which are Jack Marshaled can gain focus via Accumulator, whether or not the marshal is still alive.
|
|
Rules Clarification : Sacred Ward and/or Spell Ward (Edit)
- Sacred/Spell Warded models can still be affected by spells. For instance, CTRL area spells, AOE that deviate, and/or sprays that target a nearby non-warded model.
|
