Protectorate Exemplar Solo - ('Jack Marshal)

Such is the power of faith in an Exemplar bastion seneschal that his presence allows brother bastions to endure impossible punishment while firmly holding the line against the Creator’s enemies. Exemplar bastion seneschals are uniquely entrusted with the command of the Protectorate’s warjacks in support of their fellow Exemplar knights, joining the power of those machines to the bastions’ unbreakable wall.

Abilities[edit]

  • Set Defense - A model in this model's front arc suffers -2 on charge, slam power attack, and impact attack rolls against this model.
  • 'Jack Marshal - This model can control a Faction warjack, albeit in a limited manner. Click the link for the full rules.
  • Drive: Rhythm of Steel - While in the Seneschal's CMD range, a warjack under his control gains Flank [Bastion]. (Flank [Bastion] - This model gains +2 to melee attack rolls and an additional die on melee damage rolls vs enemy models in the melee range of a friendly Bastion model.)
  • Defensive Strike - Once per turn, when an enemy enters and ends their movement in this model's melee range, it may make one basic melee attack against it.
  • Leadership [Exemplar Bastions] - Friendly Exemplar Bastions models in this model's command range gain can remove 1 damage point when they activate.
  • Tactician [Exemplar] - While in this model's command range, friendly Exemplar models can ignore other friendly Exemplar models when determining LOS. Friendly Exemplar models can advance through other friendly Exemplar models in this model's command range if they have enough movement to move completely past them.

Weapons[edit]

  • Consecrated Halberd - 2" reach, P+S 13 melee weapon.
    • Weapon Master - When attacking with this weapon, add an additional die to its damage rolls.
    • Damage Type: Magical - This weapon deals Magical damage.
    • Blessed - Attacks with this weapon ignore spells & animi that add to the target's DEF or ARM.

Thoughts on Exemplar Bastion Seneschal[edit]

Exemplar Bastion Seneschal in a nutshell[edit]

The Exemplar Bastion Seneschal is now a core piece in Exemplar Interdiction lists with a lot of infantry - Tactician is amazing with medium bases, allowing your units to avoid jamming each other up. His jack marshall drive is okay but hard to turn on effectively as getting Bastions into position is hard work. The leadership ability is more of a bonus if you happen to be taking Bastions.

Combos & Synergies[edit]

  • Tactician helps Exemplar Bastions, Cinerators, Exemplar Vengers, and High Exemplar Gravus navigate around each other. Note that the LOS feature works for defensive strikes,
  • The problem with using a jack on him is that you are playing Exemplar Interdiction and that's points not generating free models.
  • Marshalling a Repenter - a RAT 7 Spray is effective. And between the Seneschal and the Choir of Menoth it hits hard in melee.
  • Marshalling a Sanctifier - one of the few melee heavies you actually want to marshal. Three potential focus plus blessed, flank and the the marshal's bonus for all its attacks can be terrifying.

Drawbacks & Downsides[edit]

  • It gets shot (like most marshals) and has the weaknesses of not having focus.
  • For running a jack Severius0 is available, who is a superior option for every option except maybe the Sanctifier.
    • Also, if you're aiming for 3 free solos in Exemplar Interdiction you've only got 15 points spare for all your support and non-battlegroup warjacks. Given 4-6 of that 15 are going to be Choir it doesn't leave much wriggle room.

Tricks & Tips[edit]

  • You can reposition through your own models using Tactician.

Rules Clarifications[edit]

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Leadership: Bastions

  • If a Bastion activates in the CMD range of multiple Seneschals, they still only heal 1 hitpoint. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Blessed and/or Creator's Wrath     (Edit)

  • Blessed ignores buffs even if they're not directly on the target. For instance, Haley3's Temporal Distortion spell gives a DEF buff to everyone within 5" ... and Blessed ignores it. (Locked thread)
  • You only ignore the DEF/ARM buff if the spell directly adds to the stat. A spell which instead grants a separate non-spell ability, and the ability gives a DEF/ARM buff, would not be ignored. (Infernal Ruling)
In this ruling, Blessed does not ignore the DEF from Ashen Veil, because the DEF bonus comes from Concealment, and not the spell itself.
  • If a spell buffs DEF/ARM and [something else] then you ignore the buff but not the [something else].
    • For example, the spell Cloak of Ash grants concealment, and models with concealment gain +2 DEF. You would not ignore this DEF bonus.
    • For example, the spell Death Ward grants +2 ARM and the defender chooses which column suffers damage. You would ignore the ARM bonus, but the defender still picks the column.
  • The Mk3 Blessed icon resembles the old Mk2 Magical Weapon icon. Do not get them confused.
  • This ability only ignores buffs from spells, not buffs from feats (such as Stryker1's Invincibility +5 ARM) or abilities (such as Protective Aura's +2 ARM).

Rules Clarification : 'Jack Marshal      (Edit)

  • Marshals can take character jacks (unlike in Mk2). (Closed thread)
  • Although they never get the Power Up bonus, a marshaled warjack can gain focus via other means (such as Accumulator, Empower, Spirit Harvester, etc).
    • They can do this even after the Marshal dies and they become autonomous (unlike in Mk2).
  • 'Jack Marshal & Ranking Officer (Edit)
    • If a Ranking Officer joins a unit with the 'Jack Marshal ability, then they can still only take Mercenary warjacks - they don't gain access to Faction warjacks. (Infernal Ruling)
    • They can control that mercenary warjack as normal, even though they're technically no longer the same faction as the jack. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Drive Rhythm of Steel      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Drive      (Edit)

  • If the Drive is on an Officer model, and that model dies, then the new unit commander does not inherit the Drive.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Flank      (Edit)

  • You can gain the Flank bonus vs knocked down/stationary models (refer to the latest Errata).
  • Melee range is measured from your front arc so you cannot trigger Flank on models in your back arc.
  • The target enemy doesn't need to be in the Flanker's LOS, just their melee range.
    • Most of the time if something is in your melee range then it is so close it's in your LOS too, and the difference is meaningless.
    • But if you have 2" reach and you're jammed up in B2B with a bunch of closely-spaced enemies, you'll find your LOS is blocked. In this case, you might be able to trigger Flank on an enemy model that is "hiding" behind that front row of jammers, even though you don't have LOS to it.
  • Flank is not tied to a specific weapon, so Mount attacks and Power Attacks can benefit as well.
  • If the target moves in/out of the Flanker's melee range between the attack roll and the damage roll (for instance if you throw it) then you need to reassess whether you get the Flank bonus for the damage roll. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Defensive Strike      (Edit)

  • If an enemy doesn't stop in your melee range, but continue all the way through it and out the other side, you won't get to make a Defensive Strike.
You will get to make a free strike as per normal, though.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Leadership      (Edit)

  • If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
  • See specific models for case-by-case clarifications.

Rules Clarification : Set Defense - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Tactician and/or Operations Command     (Edit)

  • The moving model doesn't have to be in CMD range, just the model they're moving through.
  • The "can ignore for LOS" is not optional. You cannot opt to "turn off" your ability to see through models, in the hope of getting a free strike or some such. (Infernal Ruling)
