Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Final Interdiction. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

Such is the power of faith in an Exemplar bastion seneschal that his presence allows brother bastions to endure impossible punishment while firmly holding the line against the Creator’s enemies. Exemplar bastion seneschals are uniquely entrusted with the command of the Protectorate’s warjacks in support of their fellow Exemplar knights, joining the power of those machines to the bastions’ unbreakable wall.

Abilities

  • 'Jack Marshal symbol.jpg 'Jack Marshal
  • Drive: Rhythm of Steel - While in this model's command range, a warjack under its control gains Flank [ Bastion ]. (Flank [ Bastion ] - When a model with Flank makes a melee attack against an enemy model in the melee range of a friendly Bastion model, the model with Flank gains +2 to attack rolls and gains an additional damage die.)
  • Defensive Strike - Once per turn, when an enemy advances into and ends its movement in this model's melee range, this model can immediately make one basic melee attack against it.
  • LeadershipExemplar Bastions ] - Friendly Exemplar Bastion models in this model's command range gain can remove 1 damage point when they begin an activation in the command range of one or more Exemplar Bastion Seneschals.
  • Set Defense - A model in this model's front arc suffers -2 on charge, slam power attack, and impact attack rolls against this model.
  • Tactician [ Exemplar ] - While in this model's command range, friendly Exemplar models can ignore other friendly Exemplar models when determining LOS. Friendly Exemplar models can advance through other friendly Exemplar models in this model's command range if they have enough movement to move completely past them.

Thoughts on Exemplar Bastion Seneschal

Exemplar Bastion Seneschal in a nutshell

The Exemplar Bastion Seneschal is now a core piece in Exemplar Interdiction lists with a lot of infantry - Tactician is amazing with medium bases, allowing your units to avoid jamming each other up. His jack marshall drive is okay but hard to turn on effectively as getting Exemplar Bastions into position is hard work. The leadership ability is more of a bonus if you happen to be taking Bastions, it doesn’t change how they play, but improves their staying power marginally.

Combos & Synergies

  • Tactician helps Exemplar Bastions, Cinerators, Exemplar Vengers, and High Exemplar Gravus navigate around each other. Note that the LOS feature works for defensive strikes,
  • Marshalling a Repenter - a RAT 7 Spray is effective. And between the Seneschal and the Choir of Menoth it hits hard in melee.
  • Dervish - The cheapest jack in the faction, on par with the Repenter, but it has two initials and Side Step, so it can make excellent use of Flank. With the Choir, Chrush! and Flank, that is two MAT 9, P+S 17, Weapon Master initials. Not bad for a 7 point light at all!
  • Marshalling a Sanctifier - Oof the few melee heavies you actually want to marshal thanks to it generating it own focus from collected souls. Three potential focus plus blessed, Hand of Fate, Flank and the the Crush! drive can be terrifying.
  • Vassal of Menoth - Empower for his jack, if you brought any, so it can charge and Crush!

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • It gets shot (like most marshals) and has the weaknesses of not having focus.
  • all of his defensive tech is vs melee and 11/16 isn’t the hardest to kill if left unscreened.

Tricks & Tips

  • You can reposition through your own models using Tactician.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Leadership: Bastions

  • If a Bastion activates in the CMD range of multiple Seneschals, they still only heal 1 hitpoint. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Blessed and/or Creator's Wrath     (Edit)

  • Blessed ignores spell buffs even if they're not directly on the target. (For example, Haley3's Temporal Distortion spell is cast on Haley and gives a DEF buff to everyone within 5". Blessed ignores it on everyone, not just on Haley.) (Locked thread)
  • You only ignore the DEF/ARM buff if the spell directly adds to the stat (for example Arcane Shield gives +3 ARM).
Whereas a spell which grants an ability, and the ability gives a DEF/ARM buff, would not be ignored by Blessed (for example Cloak of Ash gives a model concealment, and concealment gives +2 DEF).
(Infernal Ruling)
  • If a spell buffs DEF/ARM and [something else] then you ignore the buff but not the [something else]. (For example, the spell Death Ward grants +2 ARM and the defender chooses which column suffers damage. You would ignore the ARM bonus, but the defender still picks the column.)
  • This ability only ignores buffs from spells, not buffs from feats (such as Stryker1's Invincibility +5 ARM) or abilities (such as Protective Aura's +2 ARM).

Rules Clarification : 'Jack Marshal      (Edit)

  • If a warjack gets a marshal benefit (such as Crush) but then moves out of the marshal's CMD range, it keeps the benefit. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Marshals can control character warjacks. (Closed thread)
  • Although they never get the Power Up bonus, a marshaled warjack can gain focus via other means (such as Accumulator, Empower, Spirit Harvester, etc).
    • They can do this even after the Marshal dies and they become autonomous.
  • 'Jack Marshal & Ranking Officer (Edit)
    • If a Ranking Officer joins a unit with the 'Jack Marshal ability, then they can still only take Mercenary warjacks - they don't gain access to Faction warjacks. (Infernal Ruling)
    • They can control that mercenary warjack as normal, even though they're technically no longer the same faction as the jack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also this article for the Autonomous warjack rules and how to re-control them.

Rules Clarification : Drive Rhythm of Steel      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Drive      (Edit)

  • If the Drive is on an Officer model, and that model dies, then the new unit commander does not inherit the Drive.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Flank      (Edit)

  • You can gain the Flank bonus vs knocked down/stationary models (refer to the latest Errata).
  • Melee range is measured from your front arc so you cannot trigger Flank on models in your back arc.
  • The target enemy doesn't need to be in the Flanker's LOS, just their melee range.
    • Most of the time if something is in your melee range then it is so close it's in your LOS too, and the difference is meaningless.
    • But if you have 2" reach and you're jammed up in B2B with a bunch of closely-spaced enemies, you'll find your LOS is blocked. In this case, you might be able to trigger Flank on an enemy model that is "hiding" behind that front row of jammers, even though you don't have LOS to it.
  • Flank is not tied to a specific weapon, so Mount attacks and Power Attacks can benefit as well.
  • If you have two sources of Flank they are still giving you the bonus from the Flank rule so do not stack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If the target moves in/out of the Flanker's melee range between the attack roll and the damage roll (for instance if you throw it) then you need to reassess whether you get the Flank bonus for the damage roll. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Defensive Strike      (Edit)

  • If an enemy doesn't stop in your melee range, but continue all the way through it and out the other side, you won't get to make a Defensive Strike.
You will get to make a free strike as per normal, though.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Leadership      (Edit)

  • If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
    • See specific models for case-by-case Infernal Rulings.
  • If you have two Leaders handing out different buffs (such as Iona's Leadership giving Dodge, and the Wolf Rider Champion's Leadership giving Prowl) then the benefits do stack - they'll get both Dodge and Prowl. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Set Defense - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Tactician and/or Operations Command     (Edit)

  • Applying the LOS and Movement bonuses work like mirror opposites:
    • LOS: The models you draw LOS through do not need to be in the Tactician bubble. The model drawing LOS does need to be in the Tactician bubble.
    • Movement: The models you move through do need to be in the bubble. The model moving does not.
  • The "can ignore for LOS" is not optional. You cannot opt to "turn off" your ability to see through models, in the hope of getting a free strike or some such. (Infernal Ruling)
