An arcanist, scholar, and experienced sellsword, Eilish Garrity of the Black River Irregulars mercenary company now walks a dangerous road to power. Those who confront him in battle discover that his scholarly demeanor belies his potent arcane skill—which some suggest was earned through nefarious means. He insists he is wielding his power for the greater good, though it seems a dark path he treads.

Understanding
the Statblock

Mercenary - This model will work for Convergence, Crucible Guard, Cryx, Cygnar, Infernals, Khador, Protectorate, or Retribution.

  • PartisanInfernals ] - When included in a Infernals army, this model/unit is a Infernals model/unit instead of a Mercenary model/unit.

Minion - This model will work for Circle, Grymkin, Legion, Skorne, or Trollbloods.

Abilities

  • Arcane Void - When a model in this model's command range is targeted by an enemy spell, the enemy caster immediately suffers d3 damage. If the enemy spellcaster is destroyed as a result of this damage, the spell does not take effect.
  • Gate Walker - Once per activation, immediately after this model casts a spell, you can place this model anywhere completely within 5" of its current location.
  • Magic Ability [ 6 ] - This model can cast spells. Normally this uses up the model's Combat Action and as such is limited to one spell per activation, but exceptions do exist.
  • Marked Soul - This model is a Marked Soul.
  • Mental Force - This model can use Mental Force at the beginning of each attack. If it does, all attack and damage rolls resulting from the attack are boosted. After the attack is resolved, this model suffers d3 damage points.

Unbinding

Enemy upkeep spells on models/units within 5˝ of this model expire. Models suffer d3 damage points for each of those spells they controlled.

Theme Forces

    • Dark Legacy. He doesn't use up your "Up to one Mercenary solo" in this theme.
    • Hearts of Darkness. He can be included no matter which warcaster leads the theme.

Thoughts on Eilish1

Eilish1 in a nutshell

He's a support model specialising in giving your army some anti-spell protection (Arcane Void and Unbinding) and dabbling in buffing (Puppet Master). Last on the list is a boostable Bleed.

Most likely you're taking him with a very specific target for Puppet Master in mind. He's a very strong pick for many armies.

Combos & Synergies

  • MacBain can feat on him, letting him safely run into the enemy lines ready to Unbind their upkeeps next turn.
  • Major Harrison Gibbs or Lynus can heal him after he cut himself for his magic.
  • Any model with a good critical effect appreciates a re-roll. Two attempts to get a crit are better than 1, after all.
    • A Mule with Puppet Master + Deadeye has a nearly 70% chance to trigger Critical Devastation, it gets even higher if the Mule boosts the attack roll.
  • Crosse2 likes to take Eilish and Reinholdt to really improve Crosse's shooting.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He's more of a utility piece, his offensive output is quite poor for a 5 point model.
  • He faces stiff competition from many other Mercenary solos.

Tricks & Tips

  • Unbinding is normally used to get rid of enemy debuffs on your models. It can be used to get rid of the enemy buffs on enemy models ... but the short range makes that unlikely.
  • Keep him out of LOS but close enough to key models to project Arcane Void over them. He's pretty squishy, and if he sticks his neck out the enemy will snipe him.

Limited Sculpt attached to No Quarter Prime #1.
  • Released in the Northkin Expansion (2017.07)
  • His initial sculpt was a limited edition that was attached to the magazine No Quarter Prime #1.
His non-limited sculpt was released in mid-2018.
  • Eilish Garrity is a member of the Black River Irregulars, who feature in several novels and an expansion to the Undercity board game.
  • There is an official short story The Toll by Doug Seacat 2019.06, starring Eilish Garrity and set in the time between the events of the Black Crowns novel and his incarnation as Eilish the Occultist.
  • The fluff reason he is allowed to work for anyone, including the likes of Grymkin and the Retribution, is a bit of handwavium.

Rules Clarification : Arcane Void      (Edit)

  • A caster can stand within the area of multiple Arcane Voids. If they do, they will take multiple damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Several spells are target SELF but affect other models (for instance, Flashing Blade). In this case the caster needs to be in the Arcane Voider's CMD range and the location of the other models is irrelevant. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There are a couple of odd spells:
    1. (Primal Shock and Essence Blast) - Both these spells "Choose" model A, then gets to "Target" model B with an attack. In this case you can trigger Arcane Void only when model B is targeted.
    2. (Crevasse) - This spell attacks model A, then gets to use model A to make another attack vs model B. In this case you can trigger Arcane Void only when model A is targeted.

  • Gate Walker triggers after the spell is fully resolved. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Combat Action
Nearly all Magic Ability spells require the spellcaster to use their Combat Action to cast the spell. As such it is not an "at any time" ability (like it is when warcasters/warlocks cast spells). This means ...
  • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You cannot make initial ranged or initial melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
  • You cannot buy additional melee/ranged attacks after using a MA special attack. Refer to the core rulebook, "Special attacks listed as a rule of the model itself are neither melee attacks nor ranged attacks. The rules for these special attacks indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any."
  • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Non-Combat Action
There are a few models that can use a Magic Ability without using their Combat Action. These models get around all the restrictions listed above.
  • Models with Geomancy or Necromancy can use a Magic Ability at "any time" just like a warcaster/warlock.
  • Models with Battle Wizard or Necrophage can make melee attacks then get a bonus "free" spell.
  • Models with Combat Caster can cast a spell before charging, then do a normal charge + melee attack.
  • Note that Battle Wizards, Combat Casters, etc have the option to use their Combat Action to cast a spell. Their special rule is in addition to the normal spell casting, not instead of.

Rules Clarification : Puppet Master      (Edit)

  • Puppet Master can be put on a model in a unit, and it will be applied to the whole unit. However, as soon as any model in the unit chooses to use it then it expires on the entire unit (so really it only affects one model).
  • Puppet Master can be used on "secondary" damage rolls such as Electro Leap, Magic Bullet, etc.
  • It can't be used on "stay in play" damage effects like a Scather's AOE.
  • If the same player casts Puppet Master on the same model/unit multiple times it doesn't stack, at all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If different players cast Puppet Master on the same target, then they both take effect. When one player uses the Puppet Master, the other does not expire. Both players can use Puppet Master on the same roll. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Unbinding and/or Dissolution     (Edit)

  • The model that takes the d3 damage is the model that controls the spell (not the model that the spell is upon). In other words, the enemy warcaster/warlock.
  • If you dispel two upkeeps, whether it is 2 separate d3 rolls or a d3 roll that is doubled is ... unclear. The answer will affect how much focus/fury the caster has to spend to avoid damage. (Infernal Checking)
  • If the enemy caster has a way of redistributing damage (such as Egregore in the Coven), then you work out the total damage dealt from all upkeeps that expired, before dividing the damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There is a discrepancy between the card database and Warroom for Unbinding (both are labeled 2017v1). (Infernal Checking)
  • Unbinding vs Vital Magic (Edit)
  • Anti-Upkeep vs a unit (Edit)
    • If an upkeep is on a unit, then all you need to do is make it expire off any member of the unit and the spell will expire from the entire unit.
    • It doesn't matter if the target is in formation or not. (Locked thread)
    • However, if an upkeep is on a single model within a unit (such as Scything Touch) then you need to dispel it off that particular model to make it dispel. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Unbinding as a spell
    • Some models have Unbinding as a regular action, others have it as a magic ability thus it is a spell. Unbinding doesn't have a target so it gets around anti-magic stuff that triggers at "target" (like Arcane Vortex).

Rules Clarification : Mental Force      (Edit)

  • The damage from Mental Force occurs at Step 12 of the attack sequence (Appendix A).
  • If you use Mental Force on an attack that generates yet more attacks (such as the Gatorman Soul Slave casting Bone Shaker) those extra attacks don't benefit from Mental Force. (Locked thread)
  • Eilish only
    • The heal from his Bleed spell occurs at Step 10a of the attack sequence. That's before damage from Mental Force, so you can't use the heal from Bleed to offset the damage from Mental Force.
