An arcanist, scholar, and experienced sellsword, Eilish Garrity of the Black River Irregulars mercenary company now walks a dangerous road to power. Those who confront him in battle discover that his scholarly demeanor belies his potent arcane skill—which some suggest was earned through nefarious means. He insists he is wielding his power for the greater good, though it seems a dark path he treads.

Abilities[edit]

  • Arcane Void - When a model in this model's CMD range is targeted by an enemy spell, the enemy caster immediately suffers d3 damage. If this damage destroys them, the spell does not take effect.
  • Gate Walker - Once per activation, immediately after he casts a spell, Eilish can be placed anywhere completely within 5" of his current location.
  • Magic Ability [ 6 ] - This model can use its Combat Action to cast spells. Offensive spells are a (★ Attack) and friendly spells are a (★ Action).
    • Bleed (★ Attack) - Bleed is a RNG 8, POW 10 magic attack. When Bleed damages a living enemy model, this model can remove d3 damage points.
    • Puppet Master (★ Action) OR (★ Attack) - Puppet Master is a RNG 10 spell. When it targets an enemy model/unit, it is a magic attack. You can have one affected model reroll one attack or damage roll, then it expires. Puppet Master lasts for one round.
    • Unbinding (★ Action) - Enemy upkeep spells on models/units within 5˝ of this model expire. For each upkeep spell that expires as a result of Unbinding, the model maintaining the spell suffers d3 damage points.
  • Mental Force - This model can use Mental Force at the beginning of each attack. If it does, all attack and damage rolls resulting from the attack are boosted. After the attack is resolved, this model suffers d3 damage points.

Thoughts on Eilish Garrity[edit]

Eilish Garrity in a nutshell[edit]

He's a support model specialising in giving your army some anti-spell protection (Arcane Void and Disbinding) and dabbling in buffing (Puppet Master). Last on the list is a boostable Bleed.

Disbinding can be used in an offensive manner (to get rid of the enemy's defensive buffs) but the short range makes that unlikely.

Most likely, you're taking him with a very specific target for Puppet Master in mind. He's a very strong pick for many armies.

Combos & Synergies[edit]

  • MacBain can feat on him, run him up to something to clear upkeeps and keep him alive.
  • Major Harrison Gibbs or Lynus can heal him after he cut himself for his magic.
  • He's worthy of consideration when you have models that can achieve particularly powerful critical effects. For example, Puppet Master on a Siege Crawler with Fire For Effect is a nearly 70% chance to trigger Stagger.
  • Anything that makes him move farther extends the threat of his upkeep removal. A caster that provides this might be another compelling reason to bring him.
  • Take him with Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator in a Lieutenant Crosse, Resistance Fighter list for an extra shot and a re-roll on most turns, and TWO re-rolls on the turn Gastone goes ham.

Drawbacks & Downsides[edit]

  • He's more of a utility piece, so his offensive output is quite poor for a 5 point model and he faces stiff competition from many other Mercenary solos.

Tricks & Tips[edit]

Use Drake Macbain's feat to make him unkillable, run him forward. Stand him up with Boomhowler if he is knocked down and have him use Unbinding as a mini-purification on all your opponent's upkeeps.

The fluff reason he is allowed to work for anyone, including the likes of Grymkin and The Retribution is as yet unexplained.

Rules Clarification : Arcane Void      (Edit)

  • A caster can stand within the area of multiple Arcane Voids. If they do, they will take multiple damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Several spells are target SELF but affect other models (for instance, Flashing Blade). In this case the caster needs to be in the Arcane Voider's CMD range and the location of the other models is irrelevant. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There are a couple of odd spells:
    1. (Primal Shock and Essence Blast) - Both these spells "Choose" model A, then gets to "Target" model B with an attack. In this case you can trigger Arcane Void only when model B is targeted.
    2. (Crevasse) - This spell attacks model A, then gets to use model A to make another attack vs model B. In this case you can trigger Arcane Void only when model A is targeted.

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Almost every magic ability cannot be used on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Using a Magic Ability counts as a spell, for effects such as Spell Ward, Witch Hunter, etc.
  • Unlike with warcasters/warlocks, using a Magic Ability is not an "any time" ability. This means:
    • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
    • You cannot make ranged or melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
    • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge.
    • (Unless, of course, the rules for the specific MA you're using say you can.)
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Puppet Master      (Edit)

  • Puppet Master can be put on a model in a unit, and it will be applied to the whole unit. However, as soon as any model in the unit chooses to use it then it expires on the entire unit (so really it only affects one model).
  • Puppet Master can be used on "secondary" damage rolls such as Electro Leap, Magic Bullet, etc.
  • It can't be used on "stay in play" damage effects like a Scather's AOE.
  • If you cast Puppet Master on the same model/unit multiple times (eg Dhunian Knot) it doesn't stack, at all. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Unbinding and/or Dissolution     (Edit)

  • The model that takes the d3 damage is the model that controls the spell (not the model that the spell is upon). In other words, the enemy warcaster/warlock.
  • If you dispel two upkeeps, whether it is 2 separate d3 rolls or a d3 roll that is doubled is being checked. It affects how much focus/fury the caster can spend to avoid damage.
  • If the enemy caster has a way of redistributing damage (such as Egregore in the Coven), then you work out the total damage dealt from all upkeeps that expired, before dividing the damage. (Infernal Ruling)
  • There is a discrepancy between the card database and Warroom for Unbinding (both are labeled 2017v1). (Infernal Checking)
  • Unbinding vs Vital Magic (Edit)
  • Anti-Upkeep vs a unit (Edit)
    • If an upkeep is on a unit, then all you need to do is make it expire off any member of the unit and the spell will expire from the entire unit.
    • It doesn't matter if the target is in formation or not. (Locked thread)
    • However, if an upkeep is on a single model within a unit (such as Scything Touch) then you need to dispel it off that particular model to make it dispel. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Mental Force      (Edit)

  • The damage from Mental Force occurs at Step 12 of the attack sequence (Appendix A).
  • If you use Mental Force on an attack that generates yet more attacks (such as the Gatorman Soul Slave casting Bone Shaker) those extra attacks don't benefit from Mental Force. (Locked thread)
  • Eilish only
    • The heal from his Bleed spell occurs at Step 10a of the attack sequence. That's before damage from Mental Force, so you can't use the heal from Bleed to offset the damage from Mental Force.
