Trollblood Northkin Dire Troll Heavy Warbeast

Dire Troll Brawlers go to battle wielding oversized flails made from stout iron chain and scavenged scrap metal. Bellowing primitive war cries, brawlers hurl themselves at any opponent, swinging these chains in sweeping, unpredictable arcs. What these trolls lack in intelligence they compensate for with raw delight in brutal combat and laying their opponents low.

The spellcaster gains Retaliatory Strike. Ornery lasts for one round but expires after the spellcaster makes a Retaliatory Strike attack.
Retaliatory Strike - If a model with Retaliatory Strike is hit by a melee attack made by an enemy model during your opponent's turn, after that attack is resolved the model with Retaliatory Strike can immediately make one basic melee attack against that model. The model with Retaliatory Strike can make only one Retaliatory Strike per turn.

Thoughts on Dire Troll Brawler

Dire Troll Brawler in a nutshell

A beatstick heavy. Its schtick is bringing two weapons, both with base P+S 17 and 2" reach. It's the hardest hitting non-character trollblood heavy and, thanks to having weapons, has the longest melee threat range of the dire trolls. By being Northkin it also gets a lot of passive buffs that a Dire Troll Mauler wouldn’t get outside of Borka2.

It’s update in the Vengeance of Dhunia CID gave it beat back - this didn’t change its role on the battlefield but it does make it deceptively mobile once battle lines are joined.

Combos & Synergies

  • Any strength or MAT buff like the Hearthgut Hooch Hauler and the Mauler's animus
  • Rush from the Axer gives it Pathfinder and a total threat range of 12 inches, and there are multiple ways to extend that even further, like the Northkin Elder.
  • Borka, Vengeance of the Rimeshaws really loves a troll heavy with a reach weapon to counter-charge.
  • Madrak2 this is mostly for the feat but relentless charge is also handy and Ornery may be worth casting on Rathrok
  • Ragnor Skysplitter, the Runemaster Pathfinder and steady are great on a cold immune heavy beast as it means there are even fewer ways to stop it moving up the field. Digging it in also helps to deliver it and his feat is also very strong for negating damage.
    • Note that Beat Back only triggers during your Combat Action so doesn't stack with the animus.
  • Another is Hoarluk Doomshaper, Dire Prophet. His feat also helps with survivability and attack rolls. His Scroll of the Call of Troqal means that a Mauler can cast Rage on the Brawler for free, then the Brawler can cast Ornery on itself for free after it is done attacking.
  • It's the only Northkin non-character heavy, meaning that spells can be upkept for free on it in the Storm of the North theme and given speed via the Krielstone Bearer with the Northkin attachment option.
  • Stone Scribe Chronicler - It's the only non character heavy with a 2" melee range, meaning it can set up infantry to benefit from the Chronicler's Charge of the Trolls story very effectively.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • If you want a plain and simple beatstick, it has not much downsides to talk about.
  • Usually it loses out on the Mauler getting into the lists due to its animus being less useful than Rage, or the Earthborn Dire Troll which is 2 points cheaper but also a great first-wave heavy and buff platform.

Tricks & Tips

The Brawler really is a pretty simple beatstick that has reach weapons. Simple, effective, and to the point. And not as fury intensive as a Mauler.

Rules Clarification : Chain Weapon - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Beat Back      (Edit)

  • You cannot use Beat Back if you destroy the target; because you can't advance towards a model that is no longer on the table. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You can trigger Beat Back even if the model is no longer in your melee range after the attack. For instance, if you used a Pitch to throw it away, you can still Beat it Back. (Locked thread)
  • The free advance doesn't depend on the target being pushed, but it is dependent on you trying to push them:
    • If you try to push something which Cannot Be Pushed (such as a Colossal), then it won't move and then you can advance directly towards it.
    • If you choose not to push your target, then you choose not to trigger Beat Back, so you don't get to advance.
  • Beat Back can be used to push larger models.

Forcing

  • If an ability doesn't specify how much it costs to force, it costs 1. (Infernal Ruling)

Animi

  • A single Animus can be on several models at the same time. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Unlike in Mk2, in Mk3 if a model has an animus on it from any source and then another animus is cast on that model, it will lose the first instance of an animus and will be replaced by the second. It does not matter if either the first animus or the second animus is from a warlock or warbeast. (Infernal Ruling)
  • An animi cast by a warlock is an animi and a spell. (Infernal Ruling)

Transferring Damage

  • If both the warlock and the warbeast are damaged by the same attack (such as an AOE), then you need to apply the 'normal' damage to the warbeast before the transferred damage. This distinction can be important when you're working out who/what actually destroyed the beast. (Infernal Ruling)

Frenzy

  • You cannot trigger optional abilities during a Frenzy (such as Cleave). (Infernal Ruling)
  • You must trigger compulsory abilities during a Frenzy ... unless that ability generates an extra attack (like Berserk). In that case, you don't get the Berserk attack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • A warbeast may not make an Assault shot as part of a Frenzy activation.
  • If the closest target to a warbeast resolving a Frenzy cannot be charged, then the warbeast will forfeit movement and action (as per the rules of having to charge and not being able to). (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a frenzying warbeast can't reach its charge target (because the charge lane is blocked by terrain, etc) then it will make a failed charge and end its activation. (Locked thread)
  • If a frenzying warbeast has two melee weapons with the same POW, it can choose which one to use. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Snacking      (Edit)

  • You can use Snacking to RFP your target even if you're at full health. (Locked thread)
  • Snacking occurs at boxed, and thus:
    • Doesn't prevent abilities that trigger at disabled (such as Tough, Self-Sacrifice, etc).
    • Might prevent abilities that trigger at boxed, depending on who the active player is and whose model the ability triggered on. Refer the 'Triggers' section (pg 10 of the pdf)
    • Does prevent abilties that trigger at destroyed (such as collecting soul tokens, etc)
  • You can snack friendly models.
  • You may choose where each individual point of healing goes.
  • If you kill multiple models with a single attack (such as trampling over them) then you get to heal once for each model killed.

Rules Clarification : Retaliatory Strike      (Edit)

  • "Basic melee attack" also includes Mount Attacks. Refer to the definition of 'Basic Attack' in the rulebook.
  • You can't make Retaliatory Strikes vs free strikes, because the free striker is defined to be in your back arc (regardless of the actual model's facings) and thus you don't have LOS to it. (Infernal Ruling)
