Brawlmachine is an unofficial game format made by the LOS podcast team and it is designed to:
- Be smaller (and therefore faster and cheaper)
- Be both new-player friendly, and still engaging for veteran players
- Teach the basics of the Steamroller game format (which is the larger, standard tournament game format)
It very quickly proved that it is very popular among both new players and veterans.
At the time of writing (1st December 2020) the current version of Brawlmachine is v1.0. Links are:

Brawlmachine Differences
![]() |
This is a recap only and was last updated 2020.12. For the latest rules, refer to the main LOS site (link in the intro). |
There's a lot of little differences. The key differences are highlighted purple.
List construction
- The size of the game is 25 points (normal Steamroller is 75 points)
- Everything becomes FA: 1
- Multiple weapon attachments are allowed but only if they all attach to the same unit.
- Some models come in multiples and still count as FA:1 (such as Scrap Thralls). This is allowed.
- Some themes let you use a Requistion Point to take multiple models that would break FA:1 (such as Dark Host normally allows 3 Machine Wraiths). These Requistion options are not allowed in Brawlmachine
- There is a full list below, under the #Multi-Model options heading.
- A dozen or so models are not allowed at all, because they'd be over-powered at this game size.
- You may use a theme force.
- You may have two lists (more about that below).
- You may have a sideboard of 15 points (more about that below).
- You are encouraged to play at least two games vs the same opponent per tournament round.
Scenarios
- Circular zones, Rectangular zones, and Flags are all used as per the normal Steamroller rules.
- Objectives are not used
- Game length is limited to 5 rounds (instead of 7)
- To win by scenario, you need to gain 4 control points more than your opponent (instead of 5)
- Brawlmachine uses custom scenarios.
Two List format
As with normal Steamroller, you can bring two different lists. They have to be from the same Faction, and have to be led by a different warcaster/warlock.
After seeing your opponent's list(s), you secretly choose which one you're going to use for the current match. Then both players simultaneously reveal their choice.
If you're playing best of 2 or best of 3 per match, then you have to use the same list for all games (but you can adjust it with your sideboard).
Sideboard / Specialists
Specialists (aka Sideboard) allows you to take an extra models that you can swap in/out of your main list. The idea is you put extra "tools" in your sideboard that you might need, like a model with an anti-cloud ability. Then if your opponent has a lot of clouds, you bring in the sideboard model.
The baseline rules for sideboards are:
- If you were to put the main list and the sideboard models together, it still makes a legal list. So:
- you can't break Brawlmachine's FA:1 rule,
- you can't exceed your permitted Mercenary/Minion unit/solo limits,
- a unit can't have more than one command attachment,
- you can't break Animosity rules,
- etcetera
- When you swap stuff around, the main list can't go over its points limit. The sideboard can, though.
- You can't use Requistion Points on stuff in the sideboard.
- You can split attachments and/or battlegroup models between your main list and your sideboard
- For example, you could have a unit in your main list, and their weapon attachment in your sideboard
- However, these relationships must be defined in your army list. If a model in the sideboard has to be attached, or in a battlegroup, then you need to declare who it is attached to.
You can add/remove attachments, but you can't swap who they're attaching to.
- You can't swap a maximum-size unit for a minimum-size unit, or vice versa.
The extra Brawlmachine rules for sideboards are:
- The maximum size of the sideboard is 15 points.
- If you're playing a Best of 3 match, then you can't use sideboard in game 1.
Main list
- Stryker2 (Flames in the Darkness) +28 WJP
- Toro [13]
- Charger [9]
- Mad Dog [8]
- Grand Master Gabriel Throne [7]
- Alexia3 [5]
- Legion of Lost Souls (min) [11]
- Battle Priest x3 [Free] (6 points normally)
Sideboard
- Vigilants [10]
- Glyn Cormier [5]
Swaps between Game 1 and Game 2
- Take out the Legion of Lost Souls (-11)
- Have to take out the Battle Priests too, because they're attached to the Legion. (Requistion Point opens up)
- Add in Vigilants (+10)
- Add in Glyn (use Requistion Point on her)
- Main list for game 2: 24 points
- Sideboard for game 2: 17 points
Swaps between Game 2 and Game 3
- Take out the Vigilants (-10)
- Add in the Legion (+11), but don't add the attached battle priests (keep Glyn in the main list instead)
- Main list for game 3: 25 points
- Sideboard for game 3: 16 points
Multi-Model options
FA:1 has a few odd effects with multi-model options, as follows
- If you can take X models for Y points that is allowed. That counts as FA:1 in a normal game. (Example: three Scrap Thralls for 2 points or two Crabbits for 7 points)
- If you can take X models as 1 Requistion option, and those X models count as FA:1 as described above that is allowed. (Example: Storm Division allows three Stormsmith Stormcallers)
- If you can take X models as 1 Requistion option, and those X models exceed FA:1 that is not allowed. (Example: Dark Host normally allows three Machine Wraiths, but that option is not permitted in Brawlmachine).
- You can have up to 3 identical weapon attachments but only if they're all attached to the same unit. (Technically this breaks the FA: 1 rule.)
