Mercenary Privateer Trollkin Character Solo

Prime
This model is available in one Prime Army, Talion Charter. It can also be used in the Unlimited game mode. You can view the other Mk3 models that made it into a Legacy Army at this page.

Note that the rest of this page is about the model's Mark III rules.

The bosun of the Talion is a veteran sea-salt named Grogspar. Grogspar enforces discipline with the simple expedient of hurling worthless lubbers over the rail with his hook and is a crack shot with a harpoon launcher as well. Against the rare eventuality of a harpooned foe who lingers, Grogspar makes sure to attach a lit stick of explosives to every shot.

  • Critical Devastation - On a critical hit, models hit are thrown d6" directly away from the attacker. Roll distance once for all models affected. Models thrown do not deviate. Move models farthest from the attacker first. Instead of suffering blast damage, models hit but not directly hit suffer a damage roll with POW equal to half the POW of this weapon. The POW of collateral damage is equal to half the POW of this weapon.

  • Pitch - On a hit against a model with an equal or smaller base, the model hit can be thrown d6" directly away from this model. The model thrown does not deviate. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.

Theme Forces

  • Other Factions
    • Mercenary models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.
    • Aside from that, there are a few themes that will change what Faction this model counts as (and thus what "friendly Faction only" buffs it can receive). They are:

Thoughts on Bosun Grogspar

Bosun Grogspar in a Nutshell

Grogspar's key ability is No Sleeping on the Job for living Privateer models, which means they can completely shrug off wounds when they pass tough checks. He also has Pitch, which is one of the few legal ways to throw a friendly model. It also allows any of the Privateer casters to not get knocked down in Pop & Drop assassinations, and protects the Privateer solos.

Combos and Synergies

Casters

  • Gorten Grundback already provides no knockdown, but the threat of the dwarven warcaster being thrown off of Bosun's giant hook towards your army and then pulling them all towards him with his feat is both hilarious and frightening.
  • Captain Phinneus Shae is the caster that cares for privateer infantry the most. Grogspar makes them die less quickly.
  • All Privateer casters like to avoid knockdown.

Non-casters

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He is a medium base model in a sea of small ones, making it even harder to protect him.
  • CMD 8 is respectable but still not a very big buff bubble.
  • Tougher than most Privateer solos but still squishy.
  • little reason to run him outside of Talion Charter as he is overcoated if he is not leveraging no sleeping on the job.

Tricks & Tips

  • Bring him in behind some Press Gangers.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Pitch      (Edit)

  • If you Pitch on a charge attack, then the throw damage will be boosted (but not collateral damage).
  • Throw ( Edit )

    • If a model is somehow thrown at itself (which can happen with Durst1's feat) it would not move, it would be knocked down, and it would take a standard power attack damage roll but it would not take an additional die for colliding with itself. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Because you move the target model between the attack roll and the damage roll, you can get different buffs applied to the two rolls. For instance, if you throw the target in or out of a Flanking model's melee range.
  • Incorporeal vs Slammed/Thrown models ( Edit )
    • Incorporeal models cannot be moved by someone trying to slam them.
    • Slammed models can move through Incorporeal models.
      • If they have enough movement to get past them, no dramas.
      • If they land on them, you move the Incorporeal model out of the way as per the Rule of Least Disturbance.
      • If the Incorporeal model cannot be moved (i.e. it's a flag) then you move the slammed model out of the way, also by the rule of Least Disturbance.
      • For the purposes of Collateral Damage, only the model(s) you contacted before you applied the rule of Least Disturbance count as contacted.
    • The same logic applies to Throws.
  • Collateral Damage
    • Collateral damage cannot be boosted and is not considered damage from an attack or model. Refer page 33 of the 2021.08 version of the rules pdf. As a result:
      • It doesn't trigger stuff that relies on being hit by an enemy (such as Shock Field) or damaged by an enemy (such as Vengeance).
      • It doesn't get bonus damage from stuff that adds to a model's damage roll (such as Signs & Portents or Prey).
      • It doesn't matter if the attacker has crippled weapon systems or aspects.

Rules Clarification : Devastation      (Edit)

  • At very short range it is possible to catch yourself in the Devastation AOE. If this occurs you will be knocked down but not moved (since you can't be moved away from yourself). (Infernal Ruling)
  • This is not a Power Attack Throw, it just causes models to be thrown. As such, it can be used against friendly models.
  • Damage is worked out like this:
    • The model you targeted: Full POW + 2d6 (+1d6 if it was thrown into an equal- or larger-based model, or an obstacle). This can be boosted.
    • Other models in the AOE: Half POW + 2d6 (+1d6 if they were thrown into an equal- or larger-based model, or an obstacle). This is not blast damage. This can be boosted.
    • Models outside the AOE but that got something thrown into them:
      • If they were hit by something smaller: No effect
      • If they were hit by something with the same base size or larger: They're knocked down and take Half POW + 2d6. This is not blast damage. This cannot be boosted.

  • Refer to the Throw article for more.

Rules Clarification : No Sleeping on the Job      (Edit)

  • If a model is already knocked down, and is then affected by NSotJ, it doesn't get to stand up. The "cannot be knocked down" isn't retroactively applied.

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)
