Minion Farrow Light Warbeast

With the proper application of alchemical and electrical impulses, Dr. Arkadius encouraged farrow muscles to gain bulk and bones to lengthen and harden. Turning this craft to the boars of the Thornfall Alliance, he has created powerful new living weapons. His trained battle boars learn to activate pumps connected to tanks of stored adrenaline to enhance their strength as they batter opponents to pieces.

Abilities

  • Warbeast - All warbeasts share a huge stack of special rules. The short version is they're big, furious, and beat stuff up pretty good. Click here to read the long version.
  • Adrenalize - This model can use Adrenalize at any time during its activation. This model gains Berserk and Overtake that activation. At the end of that activation, this model suffers d3 damage points. (Berserk - When this model destroys one or more models with a melee attack during its Combat Action, immediately after the attack is resolved it must make one additional melee attack against another model in its melee range. Overtake - When this model destroys one or more enemy models with a basic melee attack during its Combat Action, after the attack is resolved it can immediately advance up to 1".)

Weapons

  • Claw (x2) - 0.5" reach, POW 3, P+S 11 melee weapons

Analysis of Battle Boar

Battle Boar in a nutshell

The Battle Boar has three things going for it in no particular order. The Primal animus is the only damage buffing animus on a Farrow warbeast. Adrenalize lets them chew through infantry (especially when under Primal). And as melee beasts go they are tough for their points. This makes them point for point some of the best combat light warbeasts around.

Combos & Synergies

  • Any other warbeast likes Primal. Especially the Razor Boar.
  • Anyone with a MAT buff; Berserk, Overtake, and a Fury pool sounds like an excellent combination - but MAT 5 is a whiff-fest.
    • Helga the Conquerer Field Marshal: Gang Fighter is exactly what the Battle Boar wants to chew through most infantry rather than missing on 7s.
    • Sturm & Drang Under Sturm they are cheap and tough Shield Guards, able to take the hits in place of more valuable models. Under Drang with his Pack Hunters and Overtake they can chew up infantry very fast, and Killing Ground for free charges is a much bigger proportional buff than other beasts get.
    • Archdomina Makeda has Carnage for +2 to hit
    • Makeda & the Exalted Court has Incite for +2 to hit and damage.
    • Lord Tyrant Zaadesh has a MAT boosting feat
    • Xerxis, Fury of Halaak gives a speed buff, has a feat that buffs MAT, and he's going to lose half his beasts to Frenzy after feat turn much of the time anyway.
  • Lord Carver, BMMD, Esq. III Batten Down the Hatches makes them very very tough for their cost, requiring serious brick-wrecking methods to kill, and who doesn't like Mobility.
  • Dr. Arkadius Not a bad target for Forced Evolution, and can get places to Primal Shock.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Low MAT needs buffing. The only thing they do to heavies is primal other warbeasts.
  • Low basic hitting power - two attacks and low P+S (unless under Primal)

Tricks & Tips

  • Look for close packed infantry.
  • If you use this warbeast's animus don't expect to get it back. Just expect it to go out in a blaze of glory.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification:  : Warbeast      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

See also the Warbeast page for a recap of the core warbeast rules.

Forcing

  • If an ability doesn't specify how much it costs to force, it costs 1. (Infernal Ruling)

Animi

  • A single Animus can be on several models at the same time. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Unlike in Mk2, in Mk3 if a model has an animus on it from any source and then another animus is cast on that model, it will lose the first instance of an animus and will be replaced by the second. It does not matter if either the first animus or the second animus is from a warlock or warbeast. (Infernal Ruling)
  • An animi cast by a warlock is an animi and a spell. (Infernal Ruling)

Transferring Damage

  • If both the warlock and the warbeast are damaged by the same attack (such as an AOE), then you need to apply the 'normal' damage to the warbeast before the transferred damage. This distinction can be important when you're working out who/what actually destroyed the beast. (Infernal Ruling)

Frenzy

  • You cannot trigger optional abilities during a Frenzy (such as Cleave). (Infernal Ruling)
  • You must trigger compulsory abilities during a Frenzy ... unless that ability generates an extra attack (like Berserk). In that case, you don't get the Berserk attack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • A warbeast may not make an Assault shot as part of a Frenzy activation. (Refer latest errata)
  • If the closest target to a warbeast resolving a Frenzy cannot be charged, then the warbeast will forfeit movement and action (as per the rules of having to charge and not being able to). (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a frenzying warbeast can't reach its charge target (because the charge lane is blocked by terrain, etc) then it will make a failed charge and end its activation. (Locked thread)

Rules Clarification : Adrenalize     (Edit)

  • Restrictions on "Any Time" abilities     (Edit)         [Show/Hide]
    • "Any Time" abilities can be used at any time during a model/unit's activation, except:
    1. Before any compulsory forfeiture of movement/action. See step 2 of the activation sequence, appendix A.
    2. After the model with the "Any Time" ability has had their activation end "prematurely". By this I mean you resolved something which includes the phrase "its activation ends". Examples include:
      • Running, failing a charge, or failing a slam.
      • Abilities that include "then its activation ends" (such as Reposition and Teleport).
    3. In between declaring your charge target and making your charge movement. (Infernal Ruling)
    4. In between completing your charge movement and determining whether it was a successful charge. (Infernal Ruling)
    5. When you're in the middle of moving. (Note: Impact Attacks count as being in the middle of movement).
    6. When you're in the middle of an attack. Which also includes effects that occur "after the attack is resolved".
(Although the attack is "resolved" at Step 11, in terms of using an "Any Time" ability the attack is not "finished" until after Step 14. Refer to the first paragraph of Apdx A.)
    7. Your opponent interrupted your activation to trigger one of their own abilities (such as Countercharge).
    8. Units: See below.

    • In general you can use "Any Time" abilities while you're knocked down or stationary (except Spells and Feats which specify you can't).
    • If you have a gun with a random ROF, you can use an "Any Time" ability inbetween rolling the number of shots and actually making the first attack. (Infernal Ruling)

    Units with "Any Time" abilities
    • You cannot use an "Any Time" ability before issuing/receiving orders. See step 1 and 2 of the activation sequence, appendix A.
    • A model in a unit can't use an "Any Time" ability if they run, fail a charge, or use an ability like Reposition.
Because doing one of those things makes that specific model's activation to end (even if the unit's activation is still ongoing) and you can't use abilities on models that are not active.
    • So, for example:
      • You cannot use a minifeat after the Officer runs. (Infernal Ruling)
      • You cannot use a minifeat after anyone in the unit has begun a Reposition move. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Berserk     (Edit)

  • Berserk grants an additional attack which by definition can only occur during your Combat Action. Therefore Berserk doesn't work on free strikes, impact attacks, etc.
  • If Berserk triggers at the same time as another "attack generating" ability (such as Black Spot), Berserk means you must make an attack. (Infernal Ruling)
    • In other words you can't say "I trigger both Berserk and Black Spot, I choose Black Spot, Black Spot is optional, so I'm not making any more attacks".
    • If your other generated-attack is a ranged attack (such as Quick Work or Kill Shot) then you can't use it. Not unless everything in melee range is dead, at which point you can't resolve Berserk. (Infernal Ruling)
  • "Immediately" means you can't save it until later in your activation. Berserk must be resolved at step 14 of the attack sequence (refer Apdx A).
  • You cannot use "Any Time" abilities while resolving the original attack, the Berserk attack, or between the attacks. Refer Apdx A.
  • Berserk doesn't trigger during a frenzy. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Berserk will not trigger if the target uses an ability to move the damage to another model (such as a warlock transfer).
    • But it will trigger if they use an ability to move the attack to a different model (such as Grim Salvation).
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Swift Hunterand/or Overtake     (Edit)

  • The free move must be resolved before other abilities that involve attacks (such as Quick Work or Berserk). Refer Step 12 vs 14 in Appendix A.
  • This ability does not trigger off special attacks, only basic ones.
  • An important difference:
    • Swift Hunter can be triggered by any attack, including out-of-activation attacks.
    • Overtake only works on attacks during your Combat Action. Even stuff like Impact Attacks won't trigger it.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Open Fist (aka, Power Attack Throw)     (Edit)

  • Throw - General ( Edit )
    • See also the Throw article for a recap of the core Throw rules.
    • Because you move the target model between the attack roll and the damage roll, you can get different buffs applied to the two rolls. For instance, if you throw the target in or out of a Flanking model's melee range.
  • Throw - Power Attack
    • When you make a Throw Power Attack, no other abilities of the Fist weapon (such as Chain Strike) are applied unless they specifically mention Throws.
    • If you do a Power Attack Throw and you choose to throw the target directly away, no deviation is rolled to determine the final position of the model. (Locked thread)
    • A model that cannot be targeted by melee attacks (such as Una2's feat) cannot have models thrown at them, either. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Unresolved: Since throwing Model [A] at Model [B] involves making a melee attack roll vs Model [B] which is out of your melee range, it technically breaks a whole bunch of core rules. (Infernal Checking)
    • Even though you make a "melee attack roll" vs Model [B] you don't actually make a melee attack vs it. Also, the damage it suffers is from Collateral damage, not from the original attack. So you can't trigger stuff like Snacking from damage you did to Model B.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Primal     (Edit)

  • The warbeast will frenzy next turn even if the animus expires (for instance you cast another animus to "overwrite" Primal). (Closed thread)
  • Despite having a duration of (★), you lose the STR and MAT bonus if the animus expires. (Infernal Ruling)
