Thoughts on Barnabas0

Barnabas0 in a nutshell

His toolkit is focused on himself and his warbeasts, granting them the same Blood-Quench rule he has, allowing him to have a very aggressive playstyle. In conjunction with his naturally high armor, shield, and battle host, his armor can become quite impressive. It won’t happen often, but if he can kill three models with a warbeast within 2˝, he’ll have 24 armor! With powerful base attacks, opposing players will have to be sure to keep an eye on him.

Barnabas' Henchmen rule makes the posse match Barnabas’ own statistics, and the fact that they gain Relentless Charge means he can take over for a Gatorman Witch Doctor quite well.

Battlegroup Thoughts

  • A Swamp Horror appreciates Murderous to make the most of its 4 initial attacks. Blood Quenched and Overtake from Will Work for Food also means it can gobble up half an infantry unit without running hot with fury and buff it's ARM and STR by 4 with just initials.
  • Bone Swarm - The animus can make Barnabas even harder to kill (+2 DEF)
  • Bull Snapper - The animus can make Barnabas even harder to kill (+2 ARM). With Buckler, Spiny Growth and Battle Host, Barney can go up to ARM 21!
  • Dracodile - You probably will only take this with Sturm & Drang, but a Dracodile with Blood Quenched, Battle Host and Murderous that cannot be charged thanks to Polarity Shield is a terrifying prospect for your opponent.

Combos & Synergies

  • Maelok can give Barnabas +2 ARM and Undead, and on feat turn another +2 ARM and Incorporeal. Improving Maelok's troops with hemchmen is also great. The double edged sword of this is that taking beasts on Barnabas eats into points Maelok wants to spend on infantry.
  • Captain Crawtooth prevents Barnabas being knocked down.
  • Death Archon - Mortal Fear for even more ARM.
  • Ledfoot & Tredz a 2" place is great on combat solos.
  • Sturm & Drang - As as above, but with Telekinesis. Barny can run a Dracodile for the two, which they can make unchargeable.
  • Rask has no way of hit-fixing, so a Murderous combat solo and Swamp Horror duo can do a lot of work for him, especially with Boundless Charge, Veil of Mists and Fury.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • The value of the Henchmen rule is tied directly to the strength of the Posse. They have got slightly cheaper recently and are now better outside of Blindwater but they are

are still a unit with middling strength.

  • If your opponent can keep Barnabas out of melee it's hard to get the Arm he needs to survive dedicated attention.

Tips & Tricks

  • Since Murderous Intent only costs 2 Fury and he has three base attacks, you’ll often cast it even when Barnabas is the only one affected (because it is cheaper than paying to boost 3 attacks).

Trivia

  • Released 2021.10
  • Released to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Warmachine, alongside Krueger0, Thagrosh0, Madrak0, and Makeda0. Four of them are characters from the 2006 Primal rulebook, and the 5th is Barnabas.

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Blood-Quenched - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Field Marshal      (Edit)

  • Field marshal only grants the ability to warjacks/warbeasts in the battlegroup, so (normally) the caster does not have the Field Marshal ability.
  • However if it is listed on the caster's card separately, such as on Magnus2, then they do have it. (Closed thread)

Rules Clarification : Gatorman Warlock and/or Bog Trog Warlock - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Henchmen - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Lesser Warlock and/or Draconic Consort     (Edit)

  • This model has a completely separate battlegroup to your main warlock.
    • Your main warlock cannot force warbeasts under this model's control (and vice versa).
    • Any spells/effects that apply to your main warlock's battlegroup (such as Warpath) do not apply to warbeasts under this model's control (and vice versa).
  • This model is a solo, and is not a warlock
    • It is affected by stuff which specifies "non-warlock models" (such as Seduction).
    • It is not affected by stuff which specifies "warlock" (such as Black Arts).
  • When this solo dies, any warbeasts they are controlling go wild exactly as if it was a warlock. (Infernal Ruling)
    • See this article for the Wild warbeast rules and how to re-tame them.

Rules Clarification:  : Magical Damage      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

* The "Damage Type: Magical" is not inherited by "secondary" damage from a weapon. That is, stuff like arcs (Electro Leap) or hazards (Scather). (Infernal Ruling)
  • All spells have "Damage Type: Magical" (refer errata).
    • This is inherited by "immediate" secondary damage (such as Eruption of Spines). (Infernal Ruling)
    • and might be inherited by "lingering" secondary damage (see below).
  • If a spell leaves a template in play that does damage to models that walk around in it, then:
    • if it is not described as a hazard it will do magical damage to models that walk around in it. (Example: Razor Wall)
    • if it is a hazard then it will not do magical damage to models that walk around in it. Instead, it does whatever damage type is specified by the spell description. (Example: Breath of Corruption).
    • (Infernal Ruling)
  • If a weapon/spell includes Magic Damage and another kind of elemental damage it will still damage Incorporeal models. Incorporeal models are not affected by the rule "if an attack does multiple types of damage and a model is immune to at least one it is immune to the entire attack."
The phrase "immune to non-magical damage" should be interpreted as "immune to damage that doesn't include Damage Type: Magical" (not interpreted as "has immunity to Corrosion and Electricity and Cold and etc.")

Rules Clarification : Shield and/or Buckler     (Edit)

  • The only time you lose the Shield bonus is when the weapon is crippled, or if the attack originates in your back arc. (Infernal Ruling)
    • In other words, you still get the Shield bonus while knocked down or stationary.
  • You don't get the Shield bonus vs stuff originating in your back arc. This includes stuff that "leaps" off models in your back arc, such as Electro Leap. (Locked thread)
